I was looking at the Kodak zi8 because of ThatJapanesegirl and other card based cameras as you sugested... In my search I saw the Kodak waterproof version. No much in the way of whistle n bells but for my purposes it el do nicely. And its water proof up to 3meters!!! LOL!!!
Hi, I will be in tokyo next month, please tell me where to get the best video (canon) at a good price, do the computers they sell there come with english keyboards? please help ! and thank you for your great videos!
Depends on where you are - if you are in Japan I suggest using kakaku (see the sidebar info). Two other updates/notes:
1) There is now a Canon HF11 which takes even nicer low light video
2) I have since bought a Xacti CA8 that is nowhere near the quality of the canon, but the videos are light and easy to edit (very youtube friendly) and the camera is cheap, waterproof, and fits in your pocket. A better choice if you don't need the absolute best quality video available.
Hey there, I'm glad to hear appreciation for the annotations, it is a bit of work to put in but nice to know it is helping people out (I like to think "what did I want to see when I was learning Japanese" - I'll look at tagging some onto my latest video as well perhaps, if I get the time
Wow the new video pop-ups sure come in handy for you bro! This was a cool vid, I've got a lot of catching up to do XD I havent been on youtube as often as I had been in the last year hahaha...hope all is well! ~MJ
Hey dude - I figured it isn't hard for me to do, and it probably helps some people out, so why not? It's a really cool feature that you can add and fix them on the fly. I'm good dude, I hope you're all settled back there stateside!
Well spotted mate! It is a sample intro to a Kiwi Classic by Supergroove (watch?v=clSYkn37iRQ) and their song "You Gotta Know", one of my fave NZ tracks of all time.
And the video is done. Hmmm, and it's awful late... But I think you'll like it, mate.
wow I love the annotations, especially the romaji ones, although I spend the whole time reading them but it's good for my japanese so thanks for adding them and I look forward to seeing the test of all your new cameras :D
Say... I do some shooting of bands in live houses, mostly on my other channel. Trouble is, my little Sony Cybershot with the builtin mike isn't so good in dark places. Any advice or recommendations?
Mate! On Kakaku com, you can search cameras video and still by light sensitivity 最低被写体照度 If you look at the link near the bottom of the sidebar for the comparison of the Xacti and the Canon, it shows that the Xacti can shoot in 9 lux or more, then Canon in just 3 (better optics for you again). You can search specifically for a good sensitive camera that way, or get a good camera with a good lighting attachment, I guess. Hope that helps, and I love your vids, dude!
Jason mate! I want to see myself. The key will be how well I use my editing software than the video itself (YT does not yet take ACVHD files directly), but given that I can take similar resolution on my other cameras, it will be interesting to see if there is a difference when they are all made 30 fps, 640 x 480 resolution, 1000 kps. The optics of the HF10 should still make it look better, but I wonder by how much. Plus the wide screen as well, it should make a nice space for subtitles!
Glad to be of help! Note that these cameras are available overseas for similar prices, and with English manuals, but I always think that you can't really do better than a digital camera as a souvenir of Japan, just to show off and say you got it here! I hope you have a good trip, and am glad to be of any help.
Hehe, weeell, it wasn't too long (about 1 and a half hours), and it doesn't really take much brain power as I am just writing what I said. Just a hassle. I guess it is about 20 minutes to do subs for each minute of the vid. I figured it might be helpful to some people, and this is the type of thing that I would have wanted to see on YouTube if it existed 10 years ago.
OMG I just wanted to thank you for the Awesome Subtitles for In Romaji and English THey Are Soo Soo Helpful, and if it's not too much work for you I hope you will make more videos with subs like these ^_^
Kenshinhina, I'm glad you appreciate it. It's hard work, but for comments like that, I'll keep at it! Also, on my channel page you can see I have arranged my vids into playlists showing J, E, and bilingual videos that you may like. Romaji subtitles are new, but if you like them and they don't get in the way too much, I'll keep them going.
Good question! I actually posted a link to a spec comparison and my reasons in the sidebar just now, so you can see there. The Xacti is a great camera, and if you want something flexible, portable that takes good video, it is probably still the cheaper and better choice (and hence, it is more popular on Kakaku). For me, I like to video rugby and surfing, so I wanted good optics, and the size is small enough for me. I may still get a Xacti in future, we'll see...
Have yet to need a video camera. I instead just stick to the video option on my (my gf's actually) Sony Cybershot. Really good camera!
Even though I have no intention of buying, I love browsing around Akiba, Bic Camera or Yodobashi. There is just so much to look at and fiddle with.
One case however, in the uramichi in Akiba: they were selling the new color DS for a lot more than sofplay was. Perhaps they were trying to scam us though =).
Cybershot is pretty good, actually - and your vids look pretty clear. Sites like Kakaku are great not just for helping you find the shops where a product is cheap, but also saying "I know a shop where I can get this for ***" has gotten me big discounts (like 30% big) at some bigger chains. Akiba is awesome, but it has changed a lot, even over the last year. It's still fresh most times I go and check it out.
Hey runnyrunny999! I like your editing too, your last video was very funny! The english that you want to say is "the English subtitles are perfectly in synch", or the "English matches the timing of the words". "Matches" or "In-Synch" are the best expressions.
And no, this one's mine. Get your own! (LOL)
I still haven't even used it properly yet! Give me a chance!
I like these annotations very much! If I put subtitles into the video directly, it takes more time, and the characters are not as clear. Plus, I can edit and correct these comments at any time, so it is very convenient. They take a bit of work, but I like the final outcome, and I'm glad that you like them too. Next week, I want to try doing a fun video and to try some new things, including by using these tools. It should be fun! Rucheombura san, thanks for your comments, as always!
I've got two cameras, but waching this makes me want to buy another. Very informative video. Well done! I like the bilingual annotations. How long did it take you to type and set those up?
Haha, they took longer than I was hoping! Just doing English takes about an hour, but doing Japanese probably added an extra 30 minutes to that. I thought it would be a bit easier. I guess this is another incentive to keep the videos short! If people like them, I might continue them though. So far the feedback is positive, and I love that Japanese and non-Japanese can watch the same video and comment together. Cheers mate!

There are lots of good cameras, but my conclusion is that Canon is the best quality right now.

"You've got to know, If you want to understand"
Is that what your opening says?
Say, how's the 3 Question video coming for Ericsurf6? Think you can get it done by 6/25? PC lessons with students on 6/26-27.
