It's almost like some of the churchy types didn't listen to the lyrics. And it's almost like they never considered how much of their religion and holiday was borrowed from earlier holidays and religions- quite shamelessly in fact. If they seriously considered the absurdities of the basic premises of their religion they would keep quiet about it. It's a weird kind of collective insanity.
@anthroable - not unlike most derivative religions of today, including Buddhism, Confucianism, or even Neo-Paganism. If you've going to claim the first religions are the only valid ones, come out and say it. I don't agree with that, so justify it. Worshiping reason without faith is also a form of collective insanity.
@MrDudester1 I didn't say that any religions are valid. I consider some better than others if their tenets don't include raping, killing, enslaving, smiting, punishing, etc. (like in the Bible and Koran- both VERY violent) but I don't consider any to be "true." And I could not disagree more with your last sentence. Reason (with or without faith) is the opposite of insanity.
@anthroable - We obviously don't agree on some key points- fine. But history lessons tell us that purely "reasonable" regimes without an appeal to some higher authority devolve quickly into statist, purely amoral political regimes. Look at Hitler's 'rational' Fascism, or Pol Pot's communism. Both mass murderers, both atheists, both persecuted religion as a bastion of "collective insanity." I'm done here...
@MrDudester1 Look at the most fundamental states, and compare quality-of-life indicators in the most secular states- you'll see that the correlation of strong faith and quality of life is INVERSE! And the same is true for nation states the world over. Yes we'll never agree, but have a nice day... I'm out as well...
Please, for those who really don't believe then can you not leave the ones who do alone? Surely we have been ridiculed and patronised enough? I'm not asking you to celebrate.
"Surely we have been ridiculed and patronised enough?"
You've nothing to complain about. Christians used to kill and torture nonbelievers. If they have the right to post their faith, surely atheists have the right to post their non-faith.
The "christian horseshit" is the whole POINT of Christmas, duh! It's the birthdate of Jesus in case you didn't know. I could do without the consumerism as well.
I feel this is the best Christmas song of all time. Merry Christmas and Peace on Earth. God Bless you. At Christmas we get what we deserve....Classic line
The song was not written by Greg Lake. It was written by Peter Sinfield. To quote Sinfield "SSOS have put this song on my YouTube Channel. It is about my loss of innocence and nothing more".
@cranegyver Unfortunately the irony is lost on Morrison's West Kirby... Amidst the greed and "oh, we MUST get this..." - the sounds of Greg over the tannoy. As one of those that treats the holiday as 'get presents for the children and make it a bit special for them', but as far as I'm concerned, a time when we should be practising all year round what we profess to at this time of year, I can't resist a wry chuckle!
I rather enjoy the pagan aspects of Christmas- the tree, the lights, and Santa, and the rest of it... but the christian horseshit and consumerism I could do without.
Even after reading today's (Dec. 23, 2011) news about the bombings and chaos in Iraq and Syria, I still believe that true and lasting peace will come to the Middle East -- in OUR time. Keep HOPE alive at Christmas 2011 and all throughout 2012! Light and Life to all!
If I am totally honest I think I have had more great Christmas's than I have deserved. I think as I've grown older I realise what a stupid pratt I was as a kid. Wish I could do back to about 1974 and have a go at it again. Merry Christmas everybody.
I dont believe in santa. Nor do i believe in GOD. I do believe there was a fella called JESUS who lived 2000 years ago. This fella Jesus never said "Let us cut down trees for xmas"
@JonathanKWright It's all about CHOICE! What we do with Santa Claus, what we do with Jesus Christ, and how we live for Christ. WE "make or break" Christmas. It's never an easy choice, either. A Merry and Hopeful Christmas 2011 to all!
Christmas is not about a strong bottom line. Its about peace on earth, good will toward men!! Merry Christmas all.The Classic Christmas song of all time
The true dichotomy and contridictions of Christmas; what should be and what really is. A sad but beautiful song sung by one of the most talented musicians of our time. Merry Christmas to all even if there is no peace on Earth
(Although it is often categorised as a Christmas song this was not Lake's intention. Lake wrote the song in protest at the commercialisation of Christmas.)
And the reason it's my favorite Christmas song..........
That is the exact reason it's so important to include it in the all the din and noise of the Christmas season. Amongst all the mommy's kissing Santa Clauses, the hippopotamuses, the (barely) Silent Nights, a voice of reason, dissent, and honest hope is the most refreshing carol of all.
Wonderful song and I can never help but shed a tear.........having a BAD one this christmas though though so I guess if "the chrismas we get, we deserve" then I must have been really awful :( : (
@AbsintheGirl27 Please don't think you've been awful. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. I hope you can get thru this bad Christmas and your future ones will be better. I hope you have a great New Year! Love and Peace.
40 years old now.and every year i hear this song, it still puts a lump in my throat.if i had a wish.it would be,can i go back to being 5 years old.and start again.god i mis santa.lol
@travsrfc07 me too I love this song I am showing my age of course but from the first time I heard it I always felt my holiday would not be complete without this song
The scene near the end says it all. I'm grateful to Heaven that American troops stationed in Iraq, will be coming home for Christmas 2011. I hope that many joyful reunions between soldier-fathers and their sons (and families, as a whole) will take place before or on Christmas 2011. A Merry Christmas 2011 to all!
Ok so its not meant to be in praise of Christmas but isnt it full of the truth about what we all were led to expect from Christmas and in reality what did we get.If you didnt get the jist of it let me explain,if you can afford to give someone hope at Christmas through love or by financial means then do it,because tomorrow it may be too late.xx
@boinng100 WELL SAID MATE - I LIKE THE WAY YOU STAR OUT FUCK BUT LEAVE CUNT IN - I GOT SHOT DOWN FOR BANGING ON ABOUT IT BEING A SONG ABOUT TERRORISM - NICE ONE MATE WE SHOULD TEAM UP

i am 29 tomarow and i looove all the Christmas songs .but i never heard this one before when it came on tv i started to cry thinking where have i been all this time epic song epic vpcal real blissmas!!!!!!!!!!
I was 23 when I first heard this song. The dude hit a lot of nails on the head. It don't matter what happens, snow, rain, sunshine, hate, greed, giving, love, etc. As long as your heart stays open to the real reason, Christmas will always be what it was meant to be.
@BR1NGTH3N01S3 the real reason being the up-playing of a fantasy and a story that never happened and got blown out of all proportion. The main nail he hits on the head is that it's all a fairy story.
@MoonKeepa oh get some back bone you fucking idiot you started crying your 29 you Tit its a classic xmas song from the emmerson palmer and lake fame about terrorists - NOW GO ON INTO THE PUB AND BE A MAN !!! 29 indeed i bet you fucking cried at the end toy story 3
@geoffdoor It's not about terrorism,,where do you get info from?Damn the song is about what has happened to xmas..It's a over exposed commercialized holiday..the lyrics were written by Peter Sinfield, music by Greg Lake..Not about terrorism,, you need a attitiude adjustment..MerryXmas and have a good new year
@geoffdoor i dont do pubs mate and what are you talking about what the hec is xmas i know Christmas not xmas what the hec is toy story i watch films like donnie darko, willow, legend, labyrinth movies u aINT ready fopr ill make u cry now choke on that slapnut!!!
@MoonKeepa A happy belated birthday! This tune doesn't get much airplay because it exposes a difficult truth. We CHOOSE to make Christmas what it is. I also love this song's timeless message of NO MORE WAR (especially in the Mid-East)! The imagery of the little boy running towards his soldier father speaks a universe of words! Keep looking up! Pray for The Christ of Christmas to come back very soon! Then, there will be peace on earth/goodwill towards men! Merry Christmas 2011 to ya!
@MoonKeepa Hope you're delving into other music from this generation... The stuff today can't hold a candle to the stuff I grew up with..Not an opinion,it's a fact!!
somehow listening to x factor karaoke wannabes one off xmas "hits" doesnt make me think of christmas like this, sorry but this harks back to when a seasonal no 1 meant something, not just an extra nought on simon" supermarket music" cowells bank balance.
Someone should do a real-life version of A Charlie Brown Christmas and play this song as Charlie goes Christmas shopping, and then, in search of the Christmas tree for the school Christmas play. Just a thought. Merry Christmas 2011 to all!
Pure genius! Greg Lake's superb acoustic guitar and vocals, the sweet background melody (the classical composition,Lieutenant Kitje), the absolutely marvelous orchestration and chorus! I believe Heaven applauds every time this version is played! BRAVO! Heaven love Greg Lake! A joyful and hopeful Christmas 2011 to the world!
Love this song!

It's NOT a christmas song. It's rather a song about the loss of the meaning and "magic" of christmas - thanks to the excessive commercialisation.
Once it is lost it can't be brought back
We (our family) haven't celebrate christmas for 20 years. Some sadness remains.
But - to quote John Lennon - "the dream is over" - definitely.

@MoonKeepa
I was 23 when I first heard this song. The dude hit a lot of nails on the head. It don't matter what happens, snow, rain, sunshine, hate, greed, giving, love, etc. As long as your heart stays open to the real reason, Christmas will always be what it was meant to be.
BR1NGTH3N01S3 1 month ago
@BR1NGTH3N01S3 the real reason being the up-playing of a fantasy and a story that never happened and got blown out of all proportion. The main nail he hits on the head is that it's all a fairy story.

Merry Christmas 2011 to ya!

somehow listening to x factor karaoke wannabes one off xmas "hits" doesnt make me think of christmas like this, sorry but this harks back to when a seasonal no 1 meant something, not just an extra nought on simon" supermarket music" cowells bank balance.
