  • it might be your imagination and it is weird that all the good horses are gone. I know Eight Belle's owner and have chatted with her on AVH and she wouldn't do anything to hurt a horse. the others i am not sure about but great observation and i have noticed it too. Although the best maiden runner in america is still alive. I taught him how to kiss too. His name is Marble Cliff.

  • A lot of greats do get hurt because their twig legs can't handle there speed... Like Ruffian, she had those long beautiful legs that couldn't handle her speed. They say that Ruffian was bigger than Foolish Pleasure in every aspect except for their shoe sizes. Foolish was a 6 and Ruffian a 5

  • you had to show me that

  • @misterfuntime what do you mean?

  • Go For Wand same way and Ruffian i think my opinion is that Ruffian grave is crused and i cant say anything about eight bells."/

  • zenyatta probably didn't get injured because she was more ''buff''' like secretariat so she had more muscle. its a wonder that those two racehorses (zenyatta, secretariat) did not get injured. so pretty much i think that the more muscle they have the better they get to race and not get hurt

  • you know what else is creepy?

go for wand broke her leg EXACTLY when she was racing past where ruffian was buried!

think about it i mean both fillies were in a race against another champion, ( i know wandas wasnt a match race but still) they were both in the lead, and then they both did injuries to the exact same leg!

    that is creepy!

  • @RuffianQueenOfRacing It is really creepy :S

  • @ginita105 yep!

when i heard that wanda broke down as she was racing past ruffians grave i was like :OOOOO ohmygosh!

some people think go for wand IS ruffian :/

  • We rarely know when a lesser-horse gets hurt or dies. Some of those "invisible horses" are Private Details, Go Gretta Go, and Star Over the Bay. Not one of these horses' deaths made the news. It takes the injury of one of the "good: horses for us to see that the horses can get hurt. I am not an anti-horse racer. But all horses stand a chance of getting hurt when they run. It's only the good horses who let us know this. I love horse racing, but every horse who goes to run could get hurt.

  • i agree theses great racehorses either get severly ingured or die i just don't understand it:(

  • @brijayn i think because they are backed at 2 and are not fully formed

  • how about zenyatta? She was pretty great and she never got hurt!

  • guess it true..only the good die young

  • I hate to say it, but I strongly disagree that "all great racehorses get injured". If you go through the top 100 thoroughbred racehorses of the 20th century, hardly any of them got injured. Only Ruffian and Go For wand that were actually put down due to injury on that list.

  • @BackstretchUnderdog Everyone has it's opinion

  • @ginita105 Well it's not really an opinion, but a fact what BackstretchUnderdog just say. it's not ''All the great horses'' but just a couple of were injured

  • Ruffian's pedigree didnt guarantee her demise, but itcertainly showed her vulnerability to breaking down under the extreme physical pressures that the sport can offer. Ruffian's soft-boned sire, Reviewer, had broken a leg 3 times while in training & had to be destroyed after the 4th time in a paddock accident while at stud. Ruffian's dam, Shenanigans, was a daughter of Native Dancer. So she had the same genetic predisposition for unsoundness hanging from the top and bottom branches of pedigree.

  • Eightbelles had 3 crosses to Raise a native! the managers at three chimneys who bred her should be to blame and ashamed. they would have known the risks with the such unsound lines, but again they bred for speed and talent putting health to the side. She broke down in the same place Raise a Native was weakest, in his ankles, he passed on his unsoundness to her multiple times.

  • oh and if by great you also mean loved ones than yes eightbelles and barbaro are in that group

  • Pedigree has a lot to do with it any pedigree that has 2 or more crosses with native dancer either on the raise a native or mr prospector side can pretty much garuntee something will happen in terms of injury. any ties to Native dancer alone could prove fatal. Native Dancer was agift and a curse to the breed because he gave lines with blinding speed but poor soundness. It's a shame that breeders cared more about winning then health. of the native dancer lines nothern dancers probably the safest.

  • well the like only drug going around tracks is winstrol Big Brown used it, which is why im happy he didnt win the Triple Crown.but you cant say its a curse that they died though, many greats have lost their lives but many have lived. Eight Belles and Barbaro though good racehorses, cannot be called great, as fate would have their "great" racing careers short. you cant compare eight belles with ruffian or go for wand & i find people rank Barbaro in what he could have done more than what he did.

  • @canadianhockeychick Exactly...

  • @canadianhockeychick Ruffian had her career cut short too but she was a GREAT and not just a "good" filly....

  • @ginita105 ...no i know her's (ruffians) was cut short what im saying is Ruffian was a Great horse who died to soon, so was Go for Wand, what I'm saying is you can't compare Eight Belles who was a good racehorse that broke down against great horses like Go for Wand and Ruffian. but i only said that because your title says "all great racehorses...." but since you mean that captures peoples heart too then by all means Eightbelles and barbaro were great at that :)

  • @canadianhockeychick ...for people who dont know winstrol is a growth horomone, so technically a drug, though it is leagal in the triple crown states...its still a drug and would certainly give the horse taking it an advantage. as far as i know it should only be given in the "legal" states to horses recovering from injury or ones who are sick. Rick dutrow gives horses he trains winstrol everymonth, i dont like him, its to bad bigbrown won the derby cuz Eightbelles should have won. <3

  • i'm pretty sure it's because they make the horse ''do'' drugs, they shot any kind of drug in the horses that makes them go faster... and just like people, they die because an overdose of drug. And also they can die because the foot breaks but that is jus because they are going so fast. I think it's so sad that the people can just think of giving their horse drugs. :(

  • @theLoveForHorses That's a lie, most horses these days don't do drugs! They do break legs...

  • @ginita105 oh, i read it in the news, but yeah they break legs because they are going so fast and I think that the fastest horses have more chances of breaking their legs because they are going faster. Just like we trip when we are running so fast that we can't control our legs. Well i guess everything happens for a reason. :)

    so sad tho ;(

  • @theLoveForHorses ruffian never did drugs!

  • Hmm, no not really, all things happen for a reason. There is SO MANY more that have not gone. Zenyatta, Rachel, Rags To Riches, Curlin, Lookin At Lucky, Zarkava, I could name more, it's just fate, these things happen.

  • @ZenyattaLuver Thanks but, still worried, I mean, why is it specially the loves-by-everyone ones that have to die?! It's ridiculous! I know,I know, other horses die too but we don't know because they ain't famous..Well I know that, but I just think it's wierd...That's all...
