I feel bad. Music like this, which I consider some of the most beautiful, passionate music ever created, doesn't reach much of an audience outside music aficionado's circles, and even if it did, the brainwashing of pop culture would stop people from fully appreciating it
Mulligan's piano-less quartet was something else, wasn't it ?
Have you viewed " Tudo e Jazz - Maria Schneider (parte 12) " featuring the staggeringly talented flugelhornist Ingrid Jensen ? What great 'chops' she has. My personal favourite recording of Maria Schneider's is that of Alex North's "The Love Theme From Spartacus". Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Maria gets her use of 'wordless voice' backing from U.K.'s Kenny Wheeler.
wonderful Band!!! I heard this group in Philadelphia and they were absolutely amazing! incredible writing and playing. This is contemporary music at its best!
Maria has said in an interview that she hasn't written something with swing rhythms in a while. Maybe that's why she dropped the word jazz from Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. It's too limiting. Wayne Shorter wrote years ago that jazz meant "no category". It seems to mean the opposite today. Maria has created her own wonderful musical world. Enjoy it.
Hi, 18PBurg64, I've been collecting Maria's work for about 8 years now - usually having to get the CDs from the USA because she's only known (I guess)to a relatively small band of us Brit jazz fans. Are you aware of the work of the British resident composer/arranger and world class flugelhorn/trumpet player Kenny Wheeler - original from Canada.Check out his work - particularly use of 'voice' in big band context. You'll see that the wonderful Maria is currently heavily influenced by K.W.
And furthermore, what is wrong with offering some counterpoint to the wave of positive regard these people are held in. I am not just being devil's advocate, check out some of my positive replies. I love Brian Chaley and all the cats from the Brubeck institute...unbelievable musicians. Sean Jones...genius. Jeremy Pelt...incredible! Jim Rotondi...my fav. and on and on. Arranging I'm partial to Rob McConnell, Bill Holman, Todd ANderson, and others.
Eric, Gil always swung, with the exception of Porgy and Bess which is probably the most overated album in the history of music (Here Comes da Honeyman is happenin'). I should like everything just 'cause it's what, music, jazz, something? I don't get your response.
He isn't saying you've got to like everything, he's just saying that we should really stop analysing jazz so much. When a vid like this is posted we get lots of people saying things like "oh no it's boring because they didnt use hip rhythmic concept number 2" and stuff like that. You never hear rock or rap lovers analysing their music, they just dig it. Thats my problem with the public perception of jazz today, it's just over-institutionalized.
"jlevinson6" was bashing Dave Douglas in another post, i'm not surprised to see him doing the same to Maria...ridiculous. Why am I bothering to reply...this guy/gal is hilarious. Yea, sure buddy Maria Schneider is terrible...get some ears man. I never bother posting on these things, but this time it just got to me.
Hi, I wouldn't use the term bashing, I would just say incredulous at the lack of discerning public, when there is so much great music and so many unheard musicians out there. Sure there should be a place for the Maria Schneiders and Dave Douglas' of the world, and I'll keep listening, I just don't get why so much attention is paid to them.
HI, I'm not sure I was bashing Douglas. I just think the business of music seems capable of supporting a few people and that's it, and the ones who hustle the most and are the most aggressive are the ones who get the rewards, ie contracts and hype. I think Wynton is the perfect example; great trumpet player but should not have been a leader so young and that has contributed to diminishing his musical creativity and legacy.
Stop over-analysing jazz and just appreciate its beauty. Bask in the universal appeal of the sound of jazz. Let it move you. All jazz can at some time 'get' you in the head, hands or feet. Sometimes all three if you're lucky. And, when it 'gets' you, just look in mirror. You'll find you're smiling a 360 degree smile ! Happy days.
Maria Schneider was blessed by the influence of 'Saint' Gil. She can do no wrong.
Sorry, just my opinion. I understand intellectually that it's challenging music. I just don't like the infusion of all kinds of world musics. Just doesn't move me, or make me wanna dance, or make me think. There is too much writing like this now. It's like Duke VS. the Count...everyone laudits the Duke, but I'd rather listen to the Count any day!
Her music got me from the first time I heard it, even if I couldn't understand (technically) a thing!! But I wanted to hear it again and again, and then started to get it. For me, that's what good music is all about. Every person I showed it for simply loved it, heard it constantly and now has Maria Schneider as a reference.
Extremely well written and complex music - harmonically, structurally, timbrically...
Maria is a first rate composer, orchestrator and band leader. The naysayers on this list haven't lead a group of this type nor dealt with the artistic challenges that arise. (I have).

Music is so boring. No doubt she can write, no doubt she gets great musicians, no doubt she gets lots of hype but do you actually listen to her music? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I'll keep believing and keep buying (I have her last two records) and wondering why and with a plethora of really talented big band writers (T she gets all the notoriety. It's mundane, banal, cerebral/no swing writing.
It's white jazz. Instead of blues and swing it's a bit studied, but I'm sorry you don't find the beauty in it. The intro alone is gorgeous (and for that matter, so is Maria!) Glad to know you've supported her output with your wallet, though.
This is a song, as all your music is, from growing up in rural minnesota. In a town of 4000 people called Windom. I graduated from the same school, a year after maria. In school she was an awesome musician as well. She has made the town proud
incredible band, saw them at the jazz standard a couple months ago, unlike anything id ever heard before, blew mew away. Such beautiful music.
