There is more to Japan than the atrocities of their expansionist period. My great uncle fought them and then grew to respect many aspects of their true culture when he served as part of the occupation force. It's not as though we Americans are blameless when it comes to war crimes and atrocities.......
@helmuthoorn Japan owes a lot of America for building up their country and freeing their people from the Emperor. The USA is Japans best friend even if they refuse to believe it.
But Stalin and the USSR were a whole of a lot closer to Japan in those days than Truman and the US.
The best insurance policy against being used by either the USSR or the US was simply not to be a militairy force any longer; keeping it out of the cold war.
Which was was a brilliant move, allowing Japan to be builded up and developed in peace
Of course, just like they forced Japan to surrender. Despite being without their own "true" military, the U.S. would defend them in any fight, non the less.
As long there is profit from it .I don't think that in usa people would like bases of russians or germans its hard to get rid of those bases because they were made as ex territorial place
profit as in- those bases would be valuble if we ever went to war with north korea. the bases would be good for bombing runs due to the closeness to pyongyang and other communist bases. the japanese hate the koreans too.
and why would we want to do that when it would waste money that could be used for japanese people? If americans want to waste money on protecting japan with there bases rather then japanese gov then why deny them?

Art. 9 was a brilliant diplomatic move made by the Japanese on their initiative.
They foresaw the rivalry of the forthcoming cold way and refused to become a pawn in that.
Acting like this they probably saved Japan from sharing the fate of Korea or Vietnam.
The subtle message was ; ''You may have been victorious, but we will NOT be used by you !''
McArthur might have been smart, but not a man for subtleties, so he did not grasp this. That was what costed him the presidency.

They forced the constitution but fortunately Japan is changing it now and taking back the military bases
