I almost killed my friend with that thing, when we were kids, i made that thing, and i told my friend to go to other stadium side and wait for arrow, so that he could ick it up and bring it faster. What I did not expect was that the spear will go so far and it almost hit my firend like landed few metres from his left lol.
@jukio02 yes, atlatls were used on every continent. but most native americans abandoned this when they invented the bow (about 2 thousand years ago). the aztecs still used them however untill their demise.
yes man,but only managed to win the Spanish tenochtitlan with the help of Totonaca honorable and above the tlaxcaltecas, you know very well that, even outside the steel, diseases, horses and firearms.
The atlatl has some advantage over the arches? that in Mexican pre-colobiano seemed that atlatls and arms were on equal footing? by that, if the arches are propelled supposedly more advanced and efficient (I think)? that the Spanish feared the atlatls more than the bows(at least that is what I read on a website)?
A question: Do you know if the actual Aztec javelins used fletching? It seems like it would greatly increase accuracy and distance, but I'm not sure if they actually made them that way.
All's fair in love and war. Btw your continent was conquered by a handful of Spainards and YOUR OWN PEOPLE who didn't think much of the EMPIRE that existed on the continent.
As far as Europeons sucking at and to hand combat yes that's true because they didn't train it and didn't need to but when they didn't have guns they had hand to hand weapons that they used to destroy the Persian empire and to drive the Arabs out of THIER lands.
Your hate for whites is pathetic you fucking loser.
(they had hand to hand weapons that they used to destroy the Persian empire and to drive the Arabs out of THIER lands.)
The irony in your comment. It was ARABS that destroyed the Persina Empire, NOT Europeans. Persia was always a thorn on Rome and later Byzantium's side.
Sweet love my heritage, always wanted to see an atlatl in action. But seriously ice age? I dont think its THAT old, the prehispanic cultures used it 800 years ago
more like a 32.000+ year old weapon.. the first evidence of the weapon puts it in use in the Upper Paleolithic Age. It is interesting that this weapon was used for around 10.000 years before the presense of the primitive bow.
i did not say weird.. just interesting. it seems that every 10 years our society improves on our current technology. 10.000 years is a long time to not improve the weapon. thats all i was saying.
It's the timewave phenomenon. Shorter and shorter periods of time occuring between major paradigm shifts or radical improvemnents in technology....In my opinion.
The Europeans sucked balls at hand to hand and ranged combat compared to the Natives. The Coward Europeans used steel and mounts and disease to win. Shameful.
This device would be a great tool for people with only one arm to get into primitive hunting. With a little practice, one could even throw the arrow/dart from an open or climbing deerstand high in the trees.
I have always wondered if it really makes a difference on the length... it seems only really long arrows were used, and I wonder why not use regular arrows?
After just finishing the Jean Auel Earth Series books (Clan of the Cave Bear), I'm so excited to see people making and using these spear throwers. Loved the books and so very interested in learning more.
Its not bullshit, The aztecs were the first to invent them and use them. And with training as the warriors would have had, it is possible to throw them much futher.
Actually, the earliest ones known are from France, and they're about 30-40,000 years old, if my information is correct. The aztecs did use them, yes, and extremely well, but they likely did not invent them, though it is possible they could have come about independently all over the world. No demonstration, by the way!
why does it throw further, what does the atlatl add to the spear to make it further? i'm doing an aztec project for school so i wanna know. please and thankyou
That's what I was thinking. I saw that the same spear head made by the Indians were also found in Europe, they say now they are looking into if the Indians of America came from Europe originally. I find it hard to believe that, because they have no DNA similarities or features ect. Plus, people are people. They use what they have, we are weak animals as far as the earth goes, but we are smartest. We always find the best and effective way to do stuff, like throw a spear VERY hard =)
That's what I heard, but there's lots of stories, either way, it was so long ago that they were not even "Europeans" anyway. Just people wondering around.
@Fyremael Read the Myths of Quetzalcoatl dude, a Viking philosopher-king brought them over to the new world in roughly 850-900 ad. Great stuff. Faved.
@abe2517 That would be pretty fascinating, except that I don't know of any archaeological or literary evidence that the Vikings used atlatls or any form of spear thrower, and I have studied/practiced ancient Norse/Germanic warfare quite a bit, to put it lightly. The Norse/Germanics would throw spears, but always by hand, never by atlatl or amentum. And I must correct my former post. The earliest known atlatl is 15,000 years old or so, not 30,000.
@Fyremael Fair enough, I probably shouldn't have used the word viking interchangeably with European. I just thought it might sound a bit insensitive to say the "White man gave it to the Red man".
@Fyremael it is highly likely that they became indepentent invented in many places. for atlatls are/were found on every continent. several things have been invented independently. the bow and arrow, for example, in at least 2 places. native americans didnt have bows untill about 2,000 years ago, the old world had them much earlier. its highly unlikely they had contact.
wait u go to college and u say the aztecs were the first to make atlatls? Listen to Fyremael. Its like saying the Mongols invented the bow because they are good archers and the Americans invented the first rifle.
I almost killed my friend with that thing, when we were kids, i made that thing, and i told my friend to go to other stadium side and wait for arrow, so that he could ick it up and bring it faster. That doesn't seem weird to me, seems like the natural progression of ranged weapons. Hand thrown spear, atlat, bow, crossbow, gun.
