also, technically, you're right, oxygen is a gas, so it was a gas tank of sorts that was thrown at the shark. and the end is pretty close to this, but the way you typed it, it seemed like you meant quint gets eaten, brody throws the tank and it explodes on impact...

It's actually a knife. Earlier in the film, Quint stuck it into the side of the boat. It doesnt come across very clear in the film but you can see him make a grab for it at 0:40, he's holding it at 0:42 and at 0:44 he's stabbing the shark with it.

Quint had to go like that. Symbolically speaking, it was the only way for his character to go.  And Robert Shaw had to make it as blood curdling as possible. The finest scene in the whole damn movie, in my opinion.
