-lighting is very flat, if you have trouble with lighting start with the 3 light principle
which is a key light, fill light and back(rim) light. use shadows to your advantage as shadows show depth and contact(pixar used ambient occlusion passes to produce contact shadows)
-max 9 can render ao material passes with mental ray and you can merge this with a normal render through photoshop or a comp tool (using multiply)
