A totally different version..she always put's a different spin on the many covers she does..there's no point in trying to do a cover and trying to make it sound like the original..as a musician i totally agree with some of the points made above...Brendan Beehan the man who wrote it is one of my favourite authors...
@74bomayemcfc actually written by his brother, Dominic, who wrote it for Brendan. A much more accomplished artist than Brendan but overshadowed by his brother's flamboyance.
i don't mind her being happy, i think that's great for her. i just don't see why she needs to make commercials. i'm willing to pay for her music so that she can have the money to keep making great music. but i don't like her endorsing crappy materials or cars or whatever else. you're just no supposed to do that!
same with the white stripes, they did a coca cola commercial ... or at least jack white did... anyway it sucks when they do that.
that stuff must be impossible to turn down, free money in the several thousands to the 10s of thousands just for using a small clip of yr song. YOU try turning that down.
i like to think i would turn it down if i was already living comfortably. like she said, maybe i can't know for sure until i walk in her shoes, but i would know how it makes some people not respect me as much. tom waits never sold out and i love that about him.
i see where your coming though from a fan perspective...but i mean realistically it's hard for musicians to make a living now and shit isn't getting cheaper...you got to pay for food, rent, elec., equip., etc. and then hope people like your music enough to buy it...i don't know man i don't think she's being a "sell out". i think she'd be selling out if she got back into that dark place she was in again.
thats pretty fucked up that you would say that...those guys are just like you and me and they need to make money. chan marshall even said "try being in my shoes and being able to put a down payment on my mother's house"...that's real shit...what you're saying is bull shit. and also who are you to dictate how they live their lives...is chan and jack telling you how to live yours?
i still love her, i'm just saying! a little disappointing, that's all. i'm not telling her how to live her life; that's her choice to make but i do just kind of...go eh when musicians i like do that.
cause i lose respect for her. some believe you lose all right to call yourself an artist once you start that kinda stuff. selling pepsi and government approved rock n roll. maybe she's got reasons though. i still love her.
Art is, by it's very nature, prostitution anyway. Baring your innermost thoughts and emotions so that people can buy into them and act like a voyeur. We allow that without calling them a sell-out because we like to be the voyeur and we wouldn't have their music if they never sold it, but the moment they change we turn on them. That's what it's about.
Chan was a very unhappy woman with lots of troubles. Now she's happy. Why begrudge her that? Shouldn't affect our enjoyment of the music.
