hey how are ya, i have a qquestion, i have a ford f150 with 355 ration and 975 ring and when i put in to gear and step on it a little im getting a pingish clunk in the rear end, so i swaped out the rear end and im still getting the same sound and i checked u joint they are all tight and smooth sounds like its coming more from driver side over anything else what am i looking at for issue, hope you can help thanks a bunch
mine did that but not at start but after it got warmed up you can feel go thug thug thug then it got louder and louder haha then it smelled like almonds then POW!!! alot of clicking and loud noises and smoke every wheres hahaha i dont know what happedn now i have to take it out and see hahah gay jeeps
Question I am in the process of replacing my axle bearings, but noticed there is another set of bearings on the inner beside the carrier, how hard are these to get to? If I removed the four bolts is that what holds them in place? Im not positive these bearings are bad but I know the outer bearing sounded repetitive and dry so have the axles out and when I get the parts no problem.
@w8tlftr4u Pay a professional to do the carrier bearings and pinion bearings if they are bad. You will hate yourself if you try and dont get it right, ASE master technicion here 45 yrs in the biz.
@boaterbil Thanks for the advise, I cleaned out the diff pretty good and replaced the outter axle bearings as well as replacing the pinion seal which wasnt easy being I didnt have the right tork wrench to know the exact pounds I should have, instead I went 17 full turns on the pinion nut instead of 16 1/4 it was. I have been running it almost a year now no problems so im happy with that, but I think I will have to do the front soon it doesnt sound real good when in 4 wheel D.
need proper shimming, crush sleeve or new pinion bearing, we do. That's caused by improper backlash, not lack of oil, and is resulting in the gears not properly sliding against one another, rather they're contacting on the crowns of the gears and creating noise.
If it is in the differential, I'd plan on swappin out every single bearing, pinion, carrier, and axle. I know that's expensive as hell on parts, but if one of those bearings went bad, it probably got some metal shavings in the lube, which have probably worked their way into the other bearings and started chewing up those bearings.
Master install kit for most axles is under $200. The problem is the labor of resetting the gears, but a properly set-up ring and pinion will last the life of the vehicle.
Well, I was referring to the 400-500 dollar pieces of gold that GM sells @ the dealership being as I didn't really know what parts house parts costed. I have to agree that if the gears are set up by somebody who knows what they're doing, it should last the life of the vehicle, provided the customer doesn't go out and do some stupid shit, like haul a fully-loaded cow trailer with an S-10.
lmao ive seen it done passed a cow trailer one time and i didnt see a truck infront of it till i was right beside him a little s10 4cyl was pulling it wide open at about 30MPH i could sware i smelled the tranny oil boiling
if you have an old cad like 63 or 64 they got what they call a slip yoke that sits under a plate half way to the diff.what happens is that alot of people lower these cads and never cut down thedrive shaft putting too much pressure on the yoke what i did is i elimiated it all together and made it a straight drive shaft
I would buy some gear mesh compound which is sort of like paint and see if the pinion depth was shimmed correctly. That sound is usually caused by the pinion gears riding too high on the ring gear. Spacing the front of the pinion to bring the teeth deeper should fix this problem
wow i had my rear compleatly blow like that in my truck and i was thinkin a blew out my pinion and ring also but after seein that i feel a little better
Thanks for the educational videos. Very interesting. This got me thinking and I realize the noise is from the carrier gears striking the pinion gears as they come around. There's too much distance between the gears that the teeth actually strike each other on rotation.
shim that beeotch!!

Chev, notice how it's nosier in one direction than the other?
It ain't a lube problem, it's a noisy gear problem. ;-)

@chambeers theres a product called plastagauge... or plastic gauge

works way better than paint or dye junk...
look it up "google it"

jayguy173 3 years ago
noise means your pinion and ring gears are not lined up right you have to shim up that pinion boss
