Johnny is still the top of my list for Blues. I had the honor of seeing him in the 60s. Hands down the best Rock/Blues concert I have ever been to. Admire the genius and talent.

His eye problem may be from brain damage from all that drug abuse. Jan-Michael Vincent seriously damaged his brain with excessive drinking and drugs and it shows in his most recent interviews. Jan can barely talk.

LOve you and Edger May God Bless
@BBCTV122 Why do you say that? Did you know him? So all people with drug problems are less than? Dr William Halstead founder of many general surgical tecniques, still used today was hooked on morphine. His techniques have saved many lives.
@clarkewi Heroin's(an amplified)form of morphine,so you must take a smaller dose of it than M.(or die). But H. provides a morphine-effect as poppy tea does, although H effect is slightly different.I used H a dozen times.Taking too much heroin had much of the same OD effect for me as too much tea:you're laid low, puke your guts out,get very itchy.Heroin made me sweat more&poppies never gave me the same on-the-nod,pleasant,vivid daydream effect of good heroin.I don't claim heroin's as easy to kick.
@GalaxyRover1020 Johnny's on methadone 30 yrs, replacing heroin junk for The System's bad junk?William Burroughs,on methadone in the '80s,declared methadone to be just "plain old junk"with a body buzz he'd feel down his back.Methadone reportedly can have worse& longer lasting withdrawal effects than H.,e.g.two yrs. severe depression! iv-H. IS no doubt harder to kick than poppies, but both give morphine-effects.The principle's the same.Rare dedication&a much longer taper period might be required.
@cooltooth112 It wasn't me who said he was on methadone. Another commenter said he'd been on methadone 30 years, & cited some book that had it as a factoid. I was just going by what this apparently informed other person said about it. Couldn't he have been 9 months in rehab at some point in an attempt to get off all junk entirely, but failed, & so he remains addicted to the system's own bad junk ,methadone (more addictive than heroin with worse withdrawal symptoms, some claim).
I wonder if many junkies, like Johnny, find kicking painful/hard&requiring rehab. 'cause they don't take time to quit GRADUALLY.Because SLOW TAPER over 4 months worked well&fairly painlessly(some insomnia&minor leg cramps)for me to quit a 10yr daily poppy pod tea habit(dried poppies are full of morphine)reducing dose every 5 days.I'd not tried quitting before, dissuaded by The System's propaganda it would be hard.I drew up a reduction schedule&stuck to it.Simple&tolerable.
@Bobjb999 That ain't heroin brah. Junk is like drinking 100 gallons of that tea. And that's just 1 fix. Heroin is extremely tough to kick. The only thing worse is cigerettes.
@blackleader77 Its a known fact that cigarettes are harder to quit than heroin. Nicotine addiction is the worst. The first hardest thing is diet, then nicotine, then heroin.
@bubbwe i don't wanna start 1 of those ridiculous fights on youtube, but i am going to have to disagree with you. it's funny you mention diet and i guess the only way to make my point is to out myself. your known fact may be case sensitive bcuz 4 me, it took 16 yrs 4 me 2 stop being bulimic, 10 yrs 2 stop smoking and it took me 23 yrs 2 finally kick heroin. never did a cigarette make me not be able to walk 2 the bathroom or violently throw up, shake, sweat or shit my pants. i'm just saying 4 me
@blackleader77 Thank you, brother, for telling the truth. Of course cigs are bad. But has anyone been to an AA meeting lately? You are lucky to see the far wall (through all the cig smoke).
@gilbert20 sistah, but ur welcome. did aa on & off since i was 18. let's say a spiritual road is what i needed 2 find. aa is great, & 4 sum ppl, perhaps a program nds 2 last a lifetime. 4 sum, u can take the tools u hv learned & apply them outside the rooms. it only "worked" 4 me once i dealt w the "higher power" mental block i was hving. let's just say i hvnt been on heroin or 2 a mtg in yrs & 4 me buddhism was the road, but i was not 1 of those "unfortunate few". ita all abt cause & effect xo
@harhar58 I quit my poppy habit when my wholesale supplier, reputable in the floral trade, ceased stocking poppies this yr. due to a police crackdown in Canada of the past 3 yrs.Sellers&importers risk arrest.Sellers of ground pods as a drug have been arrested in cities across Cda.Imagine Cda. more draconian re. poppies than World-Drug-War-HQ(the US)! I'm told poppies still sell in the US legally or quasi-so via mail-order&florists,but gov't's begun "steps": auditing major commercial growers...
@Bobjb999 I used an herb called Kratom, which is a plant that grows in SE Asia. It actually has a nice, dreamy effect that is akin to a hydrocodone buzz, but has no sleepy down. I used to mix it with Yerba Mate and the cravings for pills or junk was gone. It's still legal in the U.S. and you can get it on eBay.
@DarthKazi Interesting, & congrats on your own kicking.
I 'd heard a lttle bit re. Kratom some yrs. back but had completely forgotten about it by the time I was ready to quit opiates. I expect I won't need a Kratom cure myself, as I'm now cured(slow taper worked well),but might try it recreationally. I'm not good at resisting habituation the 1st time around, but am good at kicking stuff & not being tempted to resume habits again (e.g. tobacco, alcohol, poppy habits all history - touch wood!).
@Bobjb999 Don't think there is such a thing as recreational opiate use. And there is no "cure" for opiate addiction. Meaning once you've developed a taste for it, an obssession or craving, it won't go away. If you toy with the stuff long enough ti WILL get you.
@bayonett72 I saw him at the Dutch Mason Blues festival in Nova scotia in August, and he looked much better than he does here. Unfortunately, his guitar playing was rough. i think he may have to change his style to accommodate his physical limitations.
@Bobjb999 I've been going to a pain specialist for 5 years for migraines and a messed up back...I am on 300 mg a day(3 X 100) of MSCONTIN(Morphine Extended Release) + 90mg a day of just plain morphine sulfate(3 x 30mg tabs). I am scared to death now; I'm used to just chewing the MSCONTIN, which is a no no. I want off, but I am in terrible pain. Methadone is just as bad. It's really just to control an addiction and stop the crime associated with obtaining heroin or oxycontin.
@cooltooth112 I see that you wrote that chewing MSContin is a No No.... why so? I was on Perks for yrs after a bad landing from Jumping injured my back (badly) while I was in the Army (101st Airborne Div Viet Nam '68) in the late 60's. The VA took me off Perks 4 yrs ago and put me on Contin. The dosage they put me on didn't take away the pain like the perks so I started chewing them to get them into my system faster, why is it a bad thing, because it makes me more dependent?
@gr8guitar69 It's entire reason for existence was for extended release. Many young people have died from overdoses because they chewed the pills and got a huge dose into their systems immediatley. It causes many overdoses. I don't know that it makes you more dependent, but you can imagine some kid (happens everyday) takes 3 or 4 100mg MSCONTIN's all at once and is not used to them, he has taken enough to kill him. But. it's not just kids it's people like us that do the same.
@cooltooth112 Jesus God man doctors will kill you with that crap. Prayers and positive thoughts to you. Take heart, get into rehab if you can't quit on your own.. I've had chronic pain for 40 years it sucks. My gut is ruined from all the pills and I'm a vegan due to that now. Quitting the pills getting back into art and music saved my life. I'm still in pain but it's manageable by natural methods.
The guy that got me on the guitar. Hearing the Firebird going through an MXR Phaser on "Captured Live" changed my life forever....Keep rockin' Johnny, the world needs your guitar.......
@weathered79 It irks me when Sir Eric Clapton is called as the ultimate authority on Blues guitar and comments on a subject that is uniquely American. In the same way, we wouldn't expect a bar in the USA to serve original recipe Newcastle Brown Ale or Yorkshire Pudding.
Johnny, I too am a recovering Heroin addict. I stopped using in the year 2000 and have not touched it since . We have something incommon perhaps we could help each other out. I know all the drum parts from 1st Johnny Winter all the way to."CAPTURED LIVE". I have played with so many bands. My wish is to play in a band with you. My style of playing is perfect with your type of high energy Texas style blues. Mescalero aka Gary Storm. You will not be disapointed
@mcwhiteface ===WOW. Hey that is great tune by David Bowie---check it out, maybe here on YT. I tried methadone, once--my friend's normal high dose. It got me FUCKED-UP! Sicker than a dog, damn!
Nice to see you healthy.Opened for you back in the day at "My Fathers Place" in Roslyn,Long Island,N.Y. Loved those Gibson Firebirds.PEACE&LOVE,FRANKIE CARR

@KnightOwl2006 I personally agree with you but you'll get alot of hatred for it. The reason is simple....Johnny Winter learnt first hand from some of the finest American bluesmen (Clarence Garlow, Clarence Holliman, Pee Wee Crayton, etc) Clapton, Page , Beck etc all learnt from records. There's a huge difference in authenticity. Winter, to me, is one of the last direct links to REAL Blues.
@taildragger53 ===Wow I didn't know all this about Clapton, etc. I love Clapton. Johnny Winter is really a Legend. I saw him in concert once 10 years ago, and he blew me away totally! He's just awesome.
@giaisbomb Personally,( i know i'm going to get hated for this), i really consider JW tto be more inventive than Clapton & even Hendrix. ..certainly Winter has been more consistent than Jimi was. Nothing racial or anything (i'm part black myself) I recall seeing Clapton from his early days in 1966 & i never was impressed. But it's all down to personal opinion.
@taildragger53 why should it be racist to like JW over Jimmi Hendrix? And why should you be hated for that? I think the 2 cannot be compared, but as you say, it is all a matter of personal taste.....
@taildragger53- I prefer JW over Clapton, and while I like his musical style over Hendrix, I like Hendrix too. I've never been a clapton fan. He's good, I'll give him that, but I like JW's energy.
@superlou1s Yes, speaking as a person who was raised in the UK, we had some great Blues guitarists in the '60s BUT they were copyists. (our acoustic guitarists had more unique talent e.g Davey Graham/Bert Jansch) Johnny Winter was jamming in 1962 with BB King, Lonnie Brooks, etc whilst Clapton was picking licks off import records. It's abit like comparing George Harrisons sitar playing to Ravi Shankar.
All it takes is scales and arpeggios? Right. It also takes great TIME and TONE. Johnny is a master at both of those along with killer vibrato. The world's full of fast fingered guys that can't do those things. They're a dime a dozen and they can play scales and arpeggios.
johnny is an amazing player with great timing, but not tone; at least not any longer. I saw him live a few months ago and his tone was painfully bright. I think that he has it so bright because he is nearly deaf. Since the high-end is the first thing to go with becoming deaf, he compensates with his tone.
Deafness could be a factor today for sure. Most of the old rockers suffer some level of it. Sometimes it can have something to do with the sound or sound guy too. The performer doesn't always hear what's happening with the mains after sound check and the crowd comes in.
Interesting point about the sound guys. In general, it's a drag for me that rock shows are so loud and often the sound is muddled- I mean there are instruments playing you often don't hear very well in the mix. Go to a jazz or classical concert, and you hear the whole band or orchestra.
Now, as for the deafness, I'm a little surprised if that's the case with Johnny Winter. I mean, I didn't think he played at the really high decibel levels of the old "rock" rockers- the Who etc.
@wimpicker54 Yes, tone is one thing that draws me to a soloist but , for me, the most important thing is FEEL. To hear Winter or Hendrix play a slow Blues is absolute perfection.
Yo! Zeramski..remind me not to send my kid to you for lessons!! Learn the scales and you can play like Johnny??? Great Teaching!! That's classic..Classic bad.
with all due respect to Kirk Hammett and the rest of that band and its history...it really put it all in perspective when Jimmy page and Jeff Beck were on stage with metallica and some other newer talent...the blues guys just hung back let the notes fly all over the place. a great study indeed!
I have been following Johnny's music since the 70's.Heroin hooked him for a while and he beat it.Nevertheless he is one of the best damned guitarists in th blues/rock realm since the 50's.I really don't care if there are any naysayers out there. All that means to me is that you either don't listen closely to the guitar or you are just narrow minded. He has forged a very unique style of playing guitar that has never been touched by anyone, and I know all of the greats.Don't pass judgement just liste
He is cross eyed and born an Albino. Hard to see in bright lights, he used to get lead onto the stage sometimes as he was basically blinded by the lights.
Don't worry about his right eye, this guy has been through a hell of a lot and is one of the best players around.AND he's been around enough to know the difference in wanna be players and real players. He's the real deal for blues that can't be touched. If you doubt me just try to play some of it with the good tone that he has.I'm a player for many years and have only succeded in just stealing a few licks and coming only somewhat close to getting the exact fluid dynamics of his playing.
Bla Bla Bla I have been playing over 30 years and have been teaching guitar for about 10 of those years. I know what kind of a player he is. Just worried about his health and what the deal with his eye was. I have learned a lot by watching and learning from players like him . Got a chance to see him way back and saw him in 2003. My favorite track he does is "Mad dog". Very tasteful guitarist. All i can say to you is Keep practicing and you will get better.
Not to undermine your authority (I teach guitar as well) but all he's playing is the blues, straight up. Kids, learn the blues scale in all positions on the neck, play to a metronome (or with a decent drummer/bassist) and you can play like johnny.
that being said i love johnny winter. it's the personal style that he superimposes on the blues that make him 'him'.
You can learn the blues scale and run them up and down the neck. And still SUCK ASS at guitar. Look at Kirk Hammett. Its Winter's influences that talk through his hands. Today there are waaaay too many guitarists it boggles the mind. And it takes a guy like Winter to crack the Whip and make people go. "Hey maybe i should listen more" "Cause this guy is playing licks that sound cool and i have never heard played like that".
all i'm saying is johnny didn't re-invent the wheel, he's just got good taste/style. learn your scales and arpeggios along with that, and that's pretty much all it takes.
p.s. there's tons of people that would disagree with you on the hammett comment. you just happen to like johnny's style more than his. don't bring matters of taste into an argument.
No No No this isn't an argument at all ;) There probably is people that would disagree with my about Hammett. No one wins here its not a competition. Ive seen Kirk play he plays mediocre half ass shit. if your a fan? Good for you. I chose more advanced players.
Haha, I don't like Hammett. I'll I'm saying is don't confuse taste with being technically 'good' or not. it doesn't really matter anyway, Johnny's still good.
Absolutely. He is unique. When you start getting down to who is who in guitar playing. It takes a great person to leave a mark. Just play a cd of a guitar great, being a guitarist You & i can almost guess who is playing. That's leaving a mark.
i tell ya i had a really hard time kickin the scaggy moo to. it took me ten yrs using and three to kick, 2.5 yr sober off herion now, iswear i was shot in the back, shelter living and lost it all due 2 the heron but now i live i am alive it feels wonderful!
greatest guitar player in the world, gone through heaven and hell, still impressing me deeply. be careful with a fool seems to be the theme of his life.
@GalaxyRover1020 You're right, Johnny is the real deal He once invited me and my rag tag outfit onto his tour bus (late 80's) and the first thing I noticed was the Robert Johnson CD's on the table. Secondly, the Perrier water, then how Johnny stood up to shake hands - a powerful grip by the way. He was relaxed, healthy looking, and a total gentleman - a gentle giant. I don't think the Page's of the world understood how much of a debt they owed the old guys. Uneducated I guess.
@GalaxyRover1020 Page is a joke. He had his moments as a composer and producer, but his tone was lousy and he played sloppy as hell. He sounded like he was falling down stairs when he was trying to "shred" during solos. His blues stuff was OK but when he tried to stretch out you really felt uncomfortable. Hell, even on the movie "It might get loud" he was fucking up "Whole Lotta Love".
@GalaxyRover1020 I like Eddie Van Halen's way of putting it, "He played like a 2 year old with a broken hand". Eddie can say that since he did many of the fretboard runs that Page did only accurately and cleanly. It's called practice. Sometimes you have to that instead of hanging at the pub with your mates.
Oh nobody you idiot ,he just happens to be one of most acclaimed blues guitarist on the planet and has influenced every major rock star of the sixties and seventies and beyond. Not mention he played at woodstock with jimi hendrix ,the who among others.
hahahahaha u guys are killin' me. my bf actually worked for both J & E for many years, and had the same stupid misconception about "levels of albino-ism", which he shared in converse with an albino bass player (hi Aaron!). I about spewed, but Aaron is nice enough to realize my bf is socially retarded, thus gently corrected him. I got to hang around my HERO a few times, and I'll tell u 2 facts:1) he got pink eyes. and 2)he AINT no 'gentleman'. LOL GOTTA LOVE THE WINTERS ESP. EDGA!
johnny , i love u man . u are the last of the greatest blues man still around. saw u at the palladium in 92? i was the ahole yelling slip and slide. peace be with u man stay sober for us all and u
This is the first time I've heard him talk. I don't know why I'm surprised to hear his Texas twang. After all he is from Texas but I just never pictured his voice having that accent.
I don't understand why people "thumbs down" a question like the one from godwhyisthistaken regarding his eye. Why not answer the question if you know the answer? It's a question... Not everyone takes it as an insult or disrespectful, just genuine curiosity.
Johnny's the real thing, he just straps on the instument and blows off the roof, he's no faker tryin' to be something else, he seems like just a nice man and quite likley the best blues guitarist of his generation.
Come on ElDestinova, do some goddman research. Johnny and Edgar are Albinos. Pure white hair and pinkish skin. They lack pigmentation man, check out some photographs on the net. Johnny's legally blind, which is not uncommon to albinos as they age and many develop other health issues. He still plays a smokin' guitar and will always be one of THE greatest blues guitarists of all time.
Awe man Where could he have been if he hadn't gotten hooked on that shit? such a phenomenal musician, so much talent. And the industry says hush, don't mention his name cause he's a pariah from the old days of Rock and Roll when it was still cool to use Smack. It's so out dated and old school now.
Bobjb999 1 year ago
@Bobjb999 Heroin addiction , in the truest sense of the word i.e. shooting it is extremley hard to kick.
Propaganda from the goverment aside, ask any long term addict.
Johnny has been on the methodone program for around 30 yrs!
Sipping poppy tea, although addictive is really not the same thing.
GalaxyRover1020 1 year ago
@GalaxyRover1020 Johnny's on methadone 30 yrs, replacing heroin junk for The System's bad junk?William Burroughs,on methadone in the '80s,declared methadone to be just "plain old junk"with a body buzz he'd feel down his back.Methadone reportedly can have worse& longer lasting withdrawal effects than H.,e.g.two yrs. severe depression! iv-H. IS no doubt harder to kick than poppies, but both give morphine-effects.The principle's the same.Rare dedication&a much longer taper period might be required.
Bobjb999 1 year ago
@Bobjb999 Yeah, there's a book out that featured bios/ interviews etc on Robin Trower,Rick Derringer, Steve Marriott.
In the book Derringer relays that Johnny has been on the methodone program that long.
No doubt any opiate of that magnitude is hard to kick, so good going beating your addiction btw.
GalaxyRover1020 1 year ago
@Bobjb999 I really doubt that Johnny is using methadone. If he is on methadone there would have been no reason to rehab for 9 months.
cooltooth112 11 months ago
@cooltooth112 It wasn't me who said he was on methadone. Another commenter said he'd been on methadone 30 years, & cited some book that had it as a factoid. I was just going by what this apparently informed other person said about it. Couldn't he have been 9 months in rehab at some point in an attempt to get off all junk entirely, but failed, & so he remains addicted to the system's own bad junk ,methadone (more addictive than heroin with worse withdrawal symptoms, some claim).
Bobjb999 11 months ago
@Bobjb999 Johnny just said it worked, so I was taking his word for it.
cooltooth112 11 months ago
I wonder if many junkies, like Johnny, find kicking painful/hard&requiring rehab. 'cause they don't take time to quit GRADUALLY.Because SLOW TAPER over 4 months worked well&fairly painlessly(some insomnia&minor leg cramps)for me to quit a 10yr daily poppy pod tea habit(dried poppies are full of morphine)reducing dose every 5 days.I'd not tried quitting before, dissuaded by The System's propaganda it would be hard.I drew up a reduction schedule&stuck to it.Simple&tolerable.
Slow Taper: recommended!
Bobjb999 1 year ago
@Bobjb999 That ain't heroin brah. Junk is like drinking 100 gallons of that tea. And that's just 1 fix. Heroin is extremely tough to kick. The only thing worse is cigerettes.

@blackleader77 Its a known fact that cigarettes are harder to quit than heroin. Nicotine addiction is the worst. The first hardest thing is diet, then nicotine, then heroin.

@bubbwe i don't wanna start 1 of those ridiculous fights on youtube, but i am going to have to disagree with you. it's funny you mention diet and i guess the only way to make my point is to out myself. your known fact may be case sensitive bcuz 4 me, it took 16 yrs 4 me 2 stop being bulimic, 10 yrs 2 stop smoking and it took me 23 yrs 2 finally kick heroin. never did a cigarette make me not be able to walk 2 the bathroom or violently throw up, shake, sweat or shit my pants. i'm just saying 4 me

harhar58 1 year ago
@harhar58 I quit my poppy habit when my wholesale supplier, reputable in the floral trade, ceased stocking poppies this yr. due to a police crackdown in Canada of the past 3 yrs.Sellers&importers risk arrest.Sellers of ground pods as a drug have been arrested in cities across Cda.Imagine Cda. more draconian re. poppies than World-Drug-War-HQ(the US)! I'm told poppies still sell in the US legally or quasi-so via mail-order&florists,but gov't's begun "steps": auditing major commercial growers...
Bobjb999 1 year ago
@Bobjb999 I used an herb called Kratom, which is a plant that grows in SE Asia. It actually has a nice, dreamy effect that is akin to a hydrocodone buzz, but has no sleepy down. I used to mix it with Yerba Mate and the cravings for pills or junk was gone. It's still legal in the U.S. and you can get it on eBay.
DarthKazi 1 year ago
@DarthKazi Interesting, & congrats on your own kicking.
I 'd heard a lttle bit re. Kratom some yrs. back but had completely forgotten about it by the time I was ready to quit opiates. I expect I won't need a Kratom cure myself, as I'm now cured(slow taper worked well),but might try it recreationally. I'm not good at resisting habituation the 1st time around, but am good at kicking stuff & not being tempted to resume habits again (e.g. tobacco, alcohol, poppy habits all history - touch wood!).
Bobjb999 1 year ago
@Bobjb999 Don't think there is such a thing as recreational opiate use. And there is no "cure" for opiate addiction. Meaning once you've developed a taste for it, an obssession or craving, it won't go away. If you toy with the stuff long enough ti WILL get you.

It's really just to control an addiction and stop the crime associated with obtaining heroin or oxycontin.
cooltooth112 1 year ago
@cooltooth112 I see that you wrote that chewing MSContin is a No No.... why so? I was on Perks for yrs after a bad landing from Jumping injured my back (badly) while I was in the Army (101st Airborne Div Viet Nam '68) in the late 60's. The VA took me off Perks 4 yrs ago and put me on Contin. The dosage they put me on didn't take away the pain like the perks so I started chewing them to get them into my system faster, why is it a bad thing, because it makes me more dependent?
gr8guitar69 11 months ago
@gr8guitar69 It's entire reason for existence was for extended release. Many young people have died from overdoses because they chewed the pills and got a huge dose into their systems immediatley. It causes many overdoses. I don't know that it makes you more dependent, but you can imagine some kid (happens everyday) takes 3 or 4 100mg MSCONTIN's all at once and is not used to them, he has taken enough to kill him. But. it's not just kids it's people like us that do the same.
cooltooth112 11 months ago
@cooltooth112 note: instead of takes 3 or 4 100 mg, I should have said "chewed" 3 or 4 mg.
cooltooth112 11 months ago
@cooltooth112 BTW, it is the same exact problem with Oxycontin. Works just like MSCONTIN.
cooltooth112 11 months ago
@cooltooth112 Jesus God man doctors will kill you with that crap. Prayers and positive thoughts to you. Take heart, get into rehab if you can't quit on your own.. Johnny is hands down, THE best guitar player I've ever seen play. Better than Clapton, Page....
KnightOwl2006 1 year ago
@KnightOwl2006 I personally agree with you but you'll get alot of hatred for it. The reason is simple....Johnny Winter learnt first hand from some of the finest American bluesmen (Clarence Garlow, Clarence Holliman, Pee Wee Crayton, etc) Clapton, Page , Beck etc all learnt from records. There's a huge difference in authenticity. Winter, to me, is one of the last direct links to REAL Blues.
taildragger53 1 year ago 2
@taildragger53 ===Wow I didn't know all this about Clapton, etc. I love Clapton. Johnny Winter is really a Legend. I saw him in concert once 10 years ago, and he blew me away totally! He's just awesome.
giaisbomb 1 year ago 2
@giaisbomb Personally,( i know i'm going to get hated for this), i really consider JW tto be more inventive than Clapton & even Hendrix. ..certainly Winter has been more consistent than Jimi was. Nothing racial or anything (i'm part black myself) I recall seeing Clapton from his early days in 1966 & i never was impressed. But it's all down to personal opinion.
taildragger53 1 year ago 2
@taildragger53 why should it be racist to like JW over Jimmi Hendrix? And why should you be hated for that? I think the 2 cannot be compared, but as you say, it is all a matter of personal taste.....
DirkjeA 1 year ago
@taildragger53 Nope, you are not alone in this sentiment.
Jimi was a whole other animal so i exclude him in comparision to Winter.
As for Clapton? spot on.

@taildragger53- I prefer JW over Clapton, and while I like his musical style over Hendrix, I like Hendrix too. I've never been a clapton fan. He's good, I'll give him that, but I like JW's energy.
superlou1s 1 year ago
@superlou1s Yes, speaking as a person who was raised in the UK, we had some great Blues guitarists in the '60s BUT they were copyists. (our acoustic guitarists had more unique talent e.g Davey Graham/Bert Jansch) Johnny Winter was jamming in 1962 with BB King, Lonnie Brooks, etc whilst Clapton was picking licks off import records. It's abit like comparing George Harrisons sitar playing to Ravi Shankar.
taildragger53 1 year ago
All it takes is scales and arpeggios? Right. It also takes great TIME and TONE. Johnny is a master at both of those along with killer vibrato. The world's full of fast fingered guys that can't do those things. They're a dime a dozen and they can play scales and arpeggios.
wimpicker54 1 year ago
johnny is an amazing player with great timing, but not tone; at least not any longer. I saw him live a few months ago and his tone was painfully bright. I think that he has it so bright because he is nearly deaf. Since the high-end is the first thing to go with becoming deaf, he compensates with his tone.
Esuohretep 1 year ago
Deafness could be a factor today for sure. Most of the old rockers suffer some level of it. Sometimes it can have something to do with the sound or sound guy too. The performer doesn't always hear what's happening with the mains after sound check and the crowd comes in.
wimpicker54 1 year ago
@wimpicker54
I mean, I didn't think he played at the really high decibel levels of the old "rock" rockers- the Who etc.
written12 1 year ago
@wimpicker54 Yes, tone is one thing that draws me to a soloist but , for me, the most important thing is FEEL. To hear Winter or Hendrix play a slow Blues is absolute perfection.

rdougw 2 years ago 2
Don't worry about his right eye, this guy has been through a hell of a lot and is one of the best players around.AND he's been around enough to know the difference in wanna be players and real players. He's the real deal for blues that can't be touched. If you doubt me just try to play some of it with the good tone that he has.I'm a player for many years and have only succeded in just stealing a few licks and coming only somewhat close to getting the exact fluid dynamics of his playing.
trnitup211 2 years ago 3
Bla Bla Bla I have been playing over 30 years and have been teaching guitar for about 10 of those years. I know what kind of a player he is. Just worried about his health and what the deal with his eye was. I have learned a lot by watching and learning from players like him . Got a chance to see him way back and saw him in 2003. My favorite track he does is "Mad dog". Very tasteful guitarist. All i can say to you is Keep practicing and you will get better.
kevykev38 2 years ago
Not to undermine your authority (I teach guitar as well) but all he's playing is the blues, straight up. Kids, learn the blues scale in all positions on the neck, play to a metronome (or with a decent drummer/bassist) and you can play like johnny.
that being said i love johnny winter. it's the personal style that he superimposes on the blues that make him 'him'.
zeramski 2 years ago
You can learn the blues scale and run them up and down the neck. And still SUCK ASS at guitar. Look at Kirk Hammett. Its Winter's influences that talk through his hands. Today there are waaaay too many guitarists it boggles the mind. And it takes a guy like Winter to crack the Whip and make people go. "Hey maybe i should listen more" "Cause this guy is playing licks that sound cool and i have never heard played like that".
Cheers!
kevykev38 2 years ago
all i'm saying is johnny didn't re-invent the wheel, he's just got good taste/style. learn your scales and arpeggios along with that, and that's pretty much all it takes.
p.s. there's tons of people that would disagree with you on the hammett comment. you just happen to like johnny's style more than his. don't bring matters of taste into an argument.
zeramski 2 years ago
No No No this isn't an argument at all ;) There probably is people that would disagree with my about Hammett. No one wins here its not a competition. Ive seen Kirk play he plays mediocre half ass shit. if your a fan? Good for you. I chose more advanced players.
kevykev38 2 years ago
Haha, I don't like Hammett. I'll I'm saying is don't confuse taste with being technically 'good' or not. it doesn't really matter anyway, Johnny's still good.
zeramski 2 years ago
Absolutely. He is unique. When you start getting down to who is who in guitar playing. It takes a great person to leave a mark. Just play a cd of a guitar great, being a guitarist You & i can almost guess who is playing. That's leaving a mark.

Winter is a legend, and always rallied for the blues genre he loves, giving proper composing credits , helping out "his' heroes like Muddy Waters etc.
Unlike the Jimmy Pages of the biz that stole from them without giving proper credit = them getting paid.
There's those that "give back", and those that take.
Johnny certainly has given back.

@GalaxyRover1020 I agree with you 300%! Had to you a thumbs up.
taildragger53 1 year ago
@GalaxyRover1020 You're right, Johnny is the real deal He once invited me and my rag tag outfit onto his tour bus (late 80's) and the first thing I noticed was the Robert Johnson CD's on the table. Secondly, the Perrier water, then how Johnny stood up to shake hands - a powerful grip by the way. He was relaxed, healthy looking, and a total gentleman - a gentle giant. I don't think the Page's of the world understood how much of a debt they owed the old guys. Uneducated I guess.
fatchanceband 1 year ago
@GalaxyRover1020 Page is a joke. He had his moments as a composer and producer, but his tone was lousy and he played sloppy as hell. He sounded like he was falling down stairs when he was trying to "shred" during solos. His blues stuff was OK but when he tried to stretch out you really felt uncomfortable. Hell, even on the movie "It might get loud" he was fucking up "Whole Lotta Love".
DarthKazi 1 year ago
@DarthKazi Agreed, I was never impressed by Page.
I guess I just don't "get" his out of tune/ sloppy / meandering guitar style.
When he did sound good it was because of 50 guitar tracks overdubbed in the studio.
On the live front he's a train wreck.
Now Mike Bloomfield could be sloppy @ times as well, but he had that X -factor that set him apart and wiped the floor with Page.
GalaxyRover1020 1 year ago
@GalaxyRover1020 I like Eddie Van Halen's way of putting it, "He played like a 2 year old with a broken hand". Eddie can say that since he did many of the fretboard runs that Page did only accurately and cleanly. It's called practice. Sometimes you have to that instead of hanging at the pub with your mates.
DarthKazi 1 year ago
@GalaxyRover1020
Many of Page's great 'studio' solos were done in 1 take.
Many of his live performances have sucked, and many have been beyond brilliant... all are fresh and real.
TimCarrie 1 year ago
@TimCarrie - Page's basic solo might of been done in one take @ times.
So what? He's sloppy as hell, and to "punch up" the solos he thens relies on MULTIPLE guitar overdubs. Some of those solos have at least 20 overdubs.
Not a Page fan,sorry :P

Anyway Johnny always was super nice and when I asked him the first time "Johnny could you please sign these?" he replied "I sure as hell will!" : D

Well obviously you are not a muiscian as he is a legendary blues rock player.
But based on your tone you probably don't care to expand your musical knowledge.

EDGA!

This is the first time I've heard him talk. I don't know why I'm surprised to hear his Texas twang. After all he is from Texas but I just never pictured his voice having that accent.

Anyone remember the '75 or '76 concert at Anaheim stadium where Johnny & Edgar played together. ZZ top headlined. Good times!

I don't understand why people "thumbs down" a question like the one from godwhyisthistaken regarding his eye. Why not answer the question if you know the answer? It's a question... Not everyone takes it as an insult or disrespectful, just genuine curiosity.

Oh yeah, I see alot of the "thumbs down" thing on Youtube.
I ponder the same thing...
If it is a genuine question etc why not answer it

You just hang in their buddy and if you feel like shit again just play the blues brother cause that's what it's invented for, sort of.
