  • Its hilarious hearing people talk about this ad as if they know what their talking about! The rules clearly state that the use of VHF Radio is not to be used for collision avoidance and in this case the Tanker the Chief Officer was on was the stand on vessel but the rules clearly state that it does not take away your obligation of taking avoiding action when it becomes apparent that the other vessel is not giving way the Chief Officer should have done! before it became a close quarter situation!

  • why is he never put the engines on reverse if he goes 10 knots the ship will stop

  • Correct, port is the left side, the rest is a minor issue.

And, as the training shows, expect the unexpected.

First thing is to call the ships master.

Second, assume nothing, stay in CONSTANT radio and radar contact.

If there is any question, plan a course of action.

Stay in contact on 156.xxx MHz and at least one other radio, HF, satellite, UHF bridge to bridge, even Morse code on a signal lamp, but 2 means of contact is the preferred minimum.

    Training is the key.

  • what a chief!!! oh man!! i hope that kind of officers will die immediately

  • @jeanpierrealfa looks like as 4th mate )))

  • @zoobeg13 or there is something other than coffee in cup?))

  • wow i want to try that

    may i??

  • fuck dis deck officer!

  • I Stopped at 2:29 :'-( sad sad story......

  • for a minute there i was scared

  • @amugani Try reading the ROR on crossing situations before commenting. :D

  • Most stupid video ever.

This guy is no maritime officer whatsoever, his actions are unexplanable.

This is an anti-commercial. No serious client will send anyone to this training facility.

Bridge simulators are a good thing, but having the right equipment does not make it a good training facility.

  • @Pooltje1982 The wheelhouse is old, but there is still tankers that still carry this type of instrumentation. The official action of the bridge is correct, the error has commented the other vessel, not previously advised to have problems and can not turn to starboard.

  • @lagranhorabruja

Any maritime officer knows not to address any vessel by this wording. "Vessel on port bow" shows amateurs people involved. Nowadays AIS is compulsory, so it takes only a second to use the others ships name. AIS broken: If you really feel this was correct action: please return to nautical school.

I was referring to the equipment (navigation simulator) of training institute.

Old or new vessel has nothing to do with good seamanship, and is not relevant.

  • @Pooltje1982 If the AIS is mandatory for all ships over 300 gross tonnage, but to have some rudimentary systems in the simulator, only with the radar and little more, but could have used a rose for maneuver. Still, the blame really serious of the two ships.

  • @Pooltje1982 He dosent say "port bow" he says "ships on my port side"

  • @Navigationbridge port bow, port side or port board its the same :)

  • look that simulator xD the oldes i ever seen in my life

  • Цука хоть и тренажер, но какого х... ни одной команды на руль, курс какой был такой и остался. Хоть и договорился будь всегда на готове. А кофе пить надо после расхождения и с сигареткой

  • Well nice video , many navigations schools haveing a ship-simulator for training

  • anybody here knows the name of the broken tanker appears at 2:25 ?

  • To anyone who remembers the pencil and paper way of finding out a steady course on a compass rose... his course.... your course.... his position..... and rule off.

  • nice video

  • that looks like a high score for exxon

  • the capt.......are drug addict..............

  • This looks like an Islamic Terrorist senario, where the other ship deliberately collides with the first ship.

  • bullshit movie!!!

    ship on my port side???????

he tels the watch men to take the weel but does not instruct him to make a turn

    the idiot

plus he waits until it is to late to contact him again

  • @slimp1986 ..... -15

  • Heftig, maar zeer goede video.

  • Very nice video, I wish we had these kind of simulators in my faculty...

  • Why would number 2 go for a coffee break when he is on a collision course??

And why is the captain away from the bridge?

  • @tannalv Because a captain cant be awake for 24 hours. He need to sleep as well, and these kind of ships are a few weeks on the sea....

  • guys he didn't check the bearing enough AND he used the watch and he should'av turned hard to port or stopped the engines , id say capt also should'av taken the conn which may lifft up the responsibility from the chief but he didnt :D:D

  • @shadowsam0

1)Turning to port to avoid collision is not the appropriate and preferred action in many situations, and as stated in the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG), it's prohibited in many cases.

  • @canerpense it might be a good choice at least to save some lives as u know , sea is different we all know , but he turned to starboard and see what happened

  • what film is that?

  • 1)Chief Off. should have checked the bearing of the other vessel at least 2 times before saying "the bearing is not changing".

2)The course indicator in the beginning and the end of the video shows the same course. If he had ordered "hard to starboard", we vessel would have changed course, even a bit.

3)If you pause the video on the collusion scene, you would notice that they are not colliding with the vessel that Chief Off. observed before.

    (Navigation Officer)

  • @shadowsam0

2)Stopping engines would have worsen the situation, although vessels this size going at sea speed, require full reverse power for a few minutes to stop dead in the water. If the chief off. would have stopped the engine, the force on the rudder would vastly decrease thus ROT would decrease and this wouldn't be the appropriate action again.

  • @canerpense alright :D:D it all depends on ships characteristics after alll ! stopping engines in early action would have saved the situation

  • @shadowsam0

    To answer your all replies:

Vessels are not cars. They can't stop and speed up again very quickly. Also ships need to go 24/7 because we have a time schedule and we are in business. They're really different than leisure boats.

If we stopped every time we encountered a vessel in collision course, none of the goods would arrive in time, or arrive at all.

Ofcourse safety is first although there are ways to encounter possible events by very effective - risk free - basic solutions.

  • @canerpense your right , i know ships r impossible to be liek cars and i was speaking basically on that video , not in any other situation becuz that was is freakin dangerous of course we must stop the engines if u wanna save lives not just save some business for the charterers !

  • @shadowsam0

I wasn't talking about preferring business to human life. Human life is the most precious thing that one can ever have. We seamen do value it more than anyone.

To put it simpler for you, you don't need to stop the car everytime you see a car that's coming from the other direction. If you all check each other with necessary periods, and cross check it, and -if possible- have verbal confirmation, you can make the adjustments to your course and keep driving.

  • @canerpense

in this case i do agree with you 100%.

  • @shadowsam0

3)It's true that I'm not on the bridge, I wouldn't really want to be in that situation as there is nothing much to do.

A trained eye can easily see the difference between the vessel on the horizon (which have a very high freeboard and the different superstructure) which chief off. seen with binoculars and the vessel seen right before the collision.

  • @canerpense i agree with the trained eye , but its still you cant say its a collision course because sometimes vessels on the horizon they seem to be colliding but finally they cross without a problem

  • @shadowsam0

That wasn't my point. You don't necessarily need to collide with everything you see on the horizon, that's something i wouldn't argue. :)

  • @canerpense alright ! lets just navigate safely :)

  • @canerpense with my respects to you officer ,

on your third point , how did you notice that they r not colliding and your not even on the bridge with them , on your second point the ROT was changing to starboard if you notice , anyway its just a video with too much missing point like CPA and ship's speed .

  • What's the name of the movie?

That's what you call ship simulator.

  • very great video!!!

  • Fin kommentar: Forbanna tulling! :) Mange tullinger der ute, så det er bare å holde øynene åpne- husk sjøveisregel nr 5!

  • never trust anything anyone from eastern europe says . prob pissed out of there heads !

  • In my opinion is always better to be on watch when you see the port light of another, because not any missunderstanding about who should to change course, in contrary you should be wait about his intentions like in video.

  • The alarm sound is wrong and his call could be better but, it is a very good video! both actors have a very good performance and his faces just before the strike are great! It is a video of course, then, We cannot to criticize with our point of view like OOW, anyway, I was involved in this kind of manouvrings and I can remember how much stress I felt!

  • WELL DONE

  • Good video. Better than those safety movie they show to us on board. Also, a mistake in calling the other ship "Ship on my port side ;) ". Then a wrong alarm signal "Fire Alarm" but that's better than nothing. Good sentence at the end " Test the reality before the reality test you"!!

  • cool a real life Kobyashi Maru lol, but in all honosty cool vid.

  • With an aware crew like this on the bridge there is no accident. The ship would have turned in time.

The problem is with the same situation at night with the lone watchman asleep.

  • WOW, very impressing.

    A real good add

  • Very good! You can actually feel the helplesness of the bridge in face of the unavoidable collision... And the last phrase, "Test reality before reality tests you" was a nice wrap-up.

  • very good video I was thinking it was more a film than a training ad good show chaps

  • Theke diuoue eksud uejdug us dug syd gudduape g ehludce gue.!

  • @ekkofilm There is a name of this song ?

  • @osa665

  • yes, that is a great Vid, very very nice!! :)
