couldnt think of a better actor to play this role. When I heard that this novel was made into a movie, I couldn't imagine how they would find the right people to pull it off but I think they did.

These mixed people, more often then not, would be perceived as something else other than black in other parts of the world, especially Latin America (Brazil for example). It is not always the Black gene that dominant, although it is very common. You as a White person are not adept in picking up certain characteristics that are associated with Blacks, that is why Blacks are able to pass for White and Blacks who see them know they are Black.

@gatheringleave As I said earlier, I do know people that look like Wentworth Miller that have 2 "black" parents. Now- I didn't say it was not possible that one or both parents had mixed heritage. That is a different issue. My boyfriend is the same color as Wentworth Miller and both of his parents would be considered "black." He did have a great-grandparent that was mixed...and that is where his color came from. But both of his parents are considerably darker than he is.
If you look at the history of Europe the concept of a "white" person did not exist until the early colonial era of the 16th century when they began traveling all around the world meeting other people with darker skin tones. There are many swarthy Caucasians though who live in the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Europe, although not all people in the Middle East are like this due to immigration from Central and Northern Eurasia obviously, but most are.

There are millions of whites with recent black ancestry, surely some are blonds with blue eyes and no one would call them black since they don't go calling themselves black to begin with.

Wentworth Miller's father is BLACK and like most Blacks, we have mixed ancestry, we're not pure Africans, his father is Black and his mother is White, making him 1/2 black.

@genesisb28 that's fine, you don't have to believe me and I never said Went's father was pure Black, I only said that he was Black (as has Wentworth) BTW, all Blacks are mixed unless they are purebred Africans. I have Native American, Spanish and Euro in me; I'm still Black, as is his father. I also have other family members who are lighter than Wentworth and have two Black parents, and look more White than he does. There will always be some sort of admixture in Black families...

Is it the shape of the skull, the position of the eyes or ears, the size of the face, because I've seen many pictures of african americans and they all have different features so I dont know how you can tell a person of mixed african ancestry and Indian or Native American ancestry.

A lot of times it has to do with a lot of what you've said, but there is hair texture, skin undertone, nose shape, mouth/lips shape, the eyes as well. Angelina is a very good example because Whites are not born with those types of features. Her mother was a Black Creole who passed as White as with many Blacks : J.Edgar Hoover, Bob Barr (still living)

@gatheringleaves Wentworth Miller is half Black...it is quite possible that his mother's genes are dominant. When he grows his hair out, you can see more of his Blackness. It is not always the Black gene that dominant, although it is very common. You as a White person are not adept in picking up certain characteristics that are associated with Blacks, that is why Blacks are able to pass for White and Blacks who see them know they are Black.

There was a white ancestor at some point.But that's the issue: do we care that the great-grandfather is white or do we just focus on that fact that a person has 2 "obvious-looking" black parents? @gatheringleave As I said earlier, I do know people that look like Wentworth Miller that have 2 "black" parents. Now- I didn't say it was not possible that one or both parents had mixed heritage. That is a different issue. My boyfriend is the same color as Wentworth Miller and both of his parents would be considered "black." He did have a great-grandparent that was mixed...and that is where his color came from. But both of his parents are considerably darker than he is.

If you look at the history of Europe the concept of a "white" person did not exist until the early colonial era of the 16th century when they began traveling all around the world meeting other people with darker skin tones. There are many swarthy Caucasians though who live in the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Europe, although not all people in the Middle East are like this due to immigration from Central and Northern Eurasia obviously, but most are.
