Depends. Since you live in the US, you can get a pure bred Labrador for free at shelters, because there are so many stray/unwanted dogs/cats in the US. But if you want a pure breed that has heritage which has won dog shows, then it will cost you a few hundred US dollars.
Please remember that dogs are not just "things". Especially breeds like Labradors which can live well past 10 years. And they're hunting dogs too, so they need a lot of excersise. Hope this helps.

well, us dog handler do get to see them almost everyday anyway since we're also trapped in the barracks haha. Oh ya probably that's the difference, I was in a military dog unit not the police K-9. However the police K-9 barracks is just beside mine and I never see them bring their dogs home. These dogs are professional dogs and I think they have to be kept on a strict diet. Esp military guard dogs, they are not allowed to b too friendly to human or they'll lose their aggressiveness.

wrong german shepherds function better as guard dogs becos they can get aggressive. You need a friendly dog like he said. You dont want a german shepherd to scare people at airports or crowded places where you want to detect explosives.
I think they use the labs because it's a non threatening breed. The dogs just sniff bombs and other things so they don't need the power and aggression of the usual K-9 breeds. Sort of why the USDA uses Beagles.

I think the canine with the most acute olfactory function is the Corgi. However, the Labrador is used by law enforcement / customs because of its more placid temperament, i.e. it's more relaxed and calm when dealing with the public.

Not THE be-all and end-all. I work with Quarantine Detector Dogs and we use Beagles, none are pure-bred, most are bred with some kind of scent hound like a blood hound or a daschund. They use Labradors for many reasons, they can run for days on end kind of stamina, they are cute but firm too, and their size allows for many types of work.
They are not sluggish, they are calm and thorought when required. This is a video not a real pressure search. Fast when needed on command . thx for the interest.
Our dogs are not starved to perform, dogs do NOT respond to negative enforcement, that only creates fear, they are rewarded for correct response. If you would like you can contact the local k9 unit for a review.

I think the canine with the most acute olfactory function is the Corgi. However, the Labrador is used by law enforcement / customs because of its more placid temperament, i.e. it's more relaxed and calm when dealing with the public.
The dogs in this video seem to really be enjoying their work. I wish I had the same enthusiasm for my job !

Not THE be-all and end-all. I work with Quarantine Detector Dogs and we use Beagles, none are pure-bred, most are bred with some kind of scent hound like a blood hound or a daschund. They use Labradors for many reasons, they can run for days on end kind of stamina, they are cute but firm too, and their size allows for many types of work.

Our dogs are not starved to perform, dogs do NOT respond to negative enforcement, that only creates fear, they are rewarded for correct response. If you would like you can contact the local k9 unit for a review.

If they are the federal bureau of investigation, then they shouldn't be using german shepherds. Those dogs come from Germany. They should use american dogs for the job. American dogs would be more willing to help out america and fight terrorists.
