Beautiful montage by the director--he really captured the soul of a people wedded to a place (along with the song of course)--even on the bleak day, all, all is beautiful.
We did this at my high school, my senior year. All of the seniors were crying or almost crying when we sang this part, especially at the last performance-we were all thinking of how we'd miss our personal Anatevka when we graduated. Every lyric had so much more meaning. "Where I know everyone I meet"-I still get teary hearing this.
I always notice how when the scene with the rabbi at the synagogue comes up, you can see the church in the background kind of towering over the synagogue. some symbolism in that moment of their situation
Funny... under obama and our elected.."politicos"....., this is how our "americatevka" is headed (lol..except for the "overworked" part that is...)...
It's a shame they didn't show the christian part of Anatevka during the pogrom. Or even during this song. They should have shown the guys that danced with the jews, the night Tevye made his agreement with Lazar Wolf.
@JohanTW That's true. If I rember correctly your royal family started wearing the star of David through the occupation. But that might have been Holland... hard to keep it all straight after so long.
Fiddler on the roof has always meant something to me; I think it's because my great grandparents came to Britain from a very similar place, at the same time and for very similar reasons.
this part always makes me cry especially the lines "soon i'll be a stranger in a strange new place, searching for an old familiar face" one of my favorite musicals
My Grandfather had to leave Bochov at age 13 or the Goyim would have drafted him into the Czarist Army in 1909 His two sisters were sent to America as brides one in Ohio and one in Newark. And we Jews were always forced to leave until we came back and reclaimed our land that the Romans forced out of and the land was stolen from us! Now we are at home.
Religion is thwe curse of the world, just because of it lots of people died and lost their homes and lots of people hate each other because of religion even if they don't meet them.
@MateusVIII that can be said about a lot of things. it's the human condition, not religion that's the problem. personally i feel that religion is an outdated method of maintaining order and community but in the current global society it just can't cope. i see no reason why a god (or gods) can't exist, it's the same reason i don't deny life exists on other planets in the universe. the truth is we will never prove or disprove life exists elsewhere nor will we prove or disprove the existence of god
A tool is inert on its own, its when its put in the hands of man that it becomes dangerous. The same can be said about a shovel, government, money, you name it, it can be turned into a curse, not just religion.
I believe you are mistaken. Greed is the curse of the world. The greed of those on top. They waver wars because they don't feel the results. they sent their soldiers and they go to their little bunker and wait. Religion (instance, the catholic church) has done many great things for people, but of course only the monstruosities are remembered. Think about this: Comunisms have hunted down people for the believes (Religious and political) as hve monarchy and other political institution
@brrrrantarctica same here. and my grandfather (first person in the family born in the USA) looked and acted JUST LIKE Tevya, I never really got to know him because he moved to Mexico when he retired and never visited (he died last year) so this movie means a lot to me.
@odcoolshark75 The land of Israel is the holy land of Christians, Muslims, and Jews. If your worship is affected by the presence of alternative opinions you're no better than any of the people who persecuted the Jews throughout history. Personally I think Sabbath is nicer further away from radicals (on both sides) fighting a religious war.
I know it is sad they had to leave their home, however those who went to America kind of saved themselves. The plot of the movie takes place in about 1900 and just fifteen years later the first world war begin. They would all die for sure if they hadn't left Anatevka.
Well, hopefully they moved out before World War Two, this is still when the Czar was in power, and World War I does not seem to be going on, so it would be a good 30 or so years before World War Two comes crashing on their doorstep, at least 30 years, this could be 1905 for all we know.
There coulnd't have been a better finale for this movie. The atmosphere is so serious and overwhelming. Almost depressing, when they sing about leaving the only home they have had so far. But their optimism is just astonishing. It always makes me feel better - we have to face problems, and accept what comes to us.
@MrLaserowy after watching this movie for 100 times, I just thought the same thing, they had such a good spirit when they were leaving which is astonishing.
@wildliongirl It's about a Jewish community in the 1890s and the way traditions changed. Also, it's about how they had to leave Russia because the Tsar kicked them out. I know this cause I'm in a play of it!!!
Maybe that why we always wear our hats! he he. but this is such a moving song. im not jewish, but i have been friends with jewish families all my life. to imagine them being forced out of their home and my life.... its a terrifying thought.
@Mangafreak681 You don't identify with the villagers in the song? I'm not Jewish myself, but the pogrom is not the only thing that can force someone out of their home. I think this song resonates with anyone whose had to leave their friends or loved ones behind, for whatever reason.
@CaptPoco its not that i dont identify with them its just that i have never been forced out of my home, so i can't say "I know how it feels." but i know how it feels to lose a friend in situations that we have no control over. i think most people have.
Although this is a film many, many people around the world have experienced this kind of thing in their lives. I couldn't help smiling as I watched this thinking I bet those women weren't getting all narky because they want a boob-job, hair extensions & plastic stick-on nails! And I bet the men weren't sulking because they haven't got a Sat Nav or a Blackberry! Hmmm....makes you think.
mine to my family was very poor they worked so hard and the stuped govement toulch all the money but the 4 years my family just got a car in russia but they left and had to sell it but no body whanded it so we had to through it out
The story of my people..... this song always makes me cry... I imagine my ancestors leaving Portugal and Spain, their homes, their friends, once again...taking a painful journey to the The Americas.... ;(
@trinket01 There's a weird irony to the Jews being kicked out of Spain in 1492; Columbus found land to the west and European settlement of the (North) American continent led to the Jews having a place to live where they were safe(er) than where they came from.
To me this is very very sad, but I think it was good so many of them left when they did because they wouldn't have had a fun time if they were still living there when the nazis showed up however many years later.
My family fled Poland and Russia from pogroms and came to the UK on a timber ship back in 1902. Scenes like this make me think hard of how difficult it must have been to live in the Pale Of Settlement...Unfortunatly, some of my great grans cousins remained in Poland by fleeing to Warsaw and becoming "non religious"....they ended up in Belzec....

This reminds me a bit of the Russian Mennonites who had to flee from the Bolsheviks from the 1917 Revolution. Many were savagely murdered, and waves of thousands of Mennonites came to Manitoba and Saskatchewan, to the Mennonites settled there. Anyways, I loved this song and this movie!! Wonderful sentiments!
this is the type of pain and suffering that today's youth just doesn't understand...perhaps because they have never experienced it...not that I would wish it on them...but if they just understood...*sigh*...just maybe we could move forward instead of backward...
i agree from great pain comes just greatness whether it is great art, compassion, drive to succeed, hunger for the enjoyment of life. you really don't understand freedom unless you have been denied it.
i was Shprintze in my high school's performance of this. such a powerful show. i cry just thinking about this song. i BAWLED onstage. Fiddler is probably the most moving show there is. I love it beyond words and miss it more than I can express
I grw up loving this film thanks to my parents. Italian mother and Polish father. My Polish blood pulls me towards Israel every now and then. Now I have the dvd I can watch it in English or in Italian. Lovley film. SHALOM to all.
My African American mother holds a special place in her heart for this movie. She was 12 years old when it premiered in Denver, Colorado in 1972 - when her mother took her to see it. I'm a 3rd generation admirer of this movie - the music, the acting - everything. Wonderful! I will share this movie and the history of Jewish people with my children. Thank you for sharing this!
I love this song! and the atmosphere created on the movie right when they are leaving anatevka is great beacuse its foggy and gray and the acting is extraordinary they are really thinking on anatevka, those were the days when directors knew how to deal with actors and how to create great performances. This movie is timeless , iconic, because of how much care and detail they put into every aspect of it.
Anatevka is in Russian, not Yiddish or Hebrew, for it was a village in Russian Empire not Israel))) "-vka" is usual suffix for villages (like "-ville" in English), and Anat... I don't know. Can you tell what "London" or "York" means?)))
According to one site: "The girl's name Anat is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "to sing"."
So, "Songville" would be the rough English translation of Anatevka.
Anat can also be derived from Anath, which is Hebrew for "Answer." Either way, the name Anatevka appears to be a combination of languages (just as Hebrew itself is originally a combination of Chaldean and ancient Phonecian).
KT Perry based her song ET off of this song

This movie is timeless , iconic, because of how much care and detail they put into every aspect of it.

what does anatevka mean?
In Yiddish or Hebrew, or is it just a made up name with no meaning?
BankruptMonkey 2 years ago
Anatevka is in Russian, not Yiddish or Hebrew, for it was a village in Russian Empire not Israel))) "-vka" is usual suffix for villages (like "-ville" in English), and Anat... I don't know. Can you tell what "London" or "York" means?)))
S10THh 2 years ago
According to one site: "The girl's name Anat is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "to sing"."
So, "Songville" would be the rough English translation of Anatevka.
Anat can also be derived from Anath, which is Hebrew for "Answer." Either way, the name Anatevka appears to be a combination of languages (just as Hebrew itself is originally a combination of Chaldean and ancient Phonecian).

I'm a Hebrew native speaker and I don't see how Anat can be translated to "to sing". Its root is "answer" as far as I know.

So, "Answerville." Sounds like some wishful thinking on the part of the founders.
