Update - We've been running Bodhi for 6 months now, mostly 1.1.0 and 1.2.0 but have just downloaded and tested the latest 1.2.1 release on live CD. It's good on our hardware.
Bodhi really does use 90MB of RAM, even with compositor transparency and other eye candy and this ancient Compaq (Celeron 420 and shared Intel graphics) is entirely happy doing 720p Flash video. Surprising!
The website has been polished up nicely, too! We like it.
@quidsup Know what you mean! At least Oneiric is not as crashy as Natty was on our hardware. Had to wipe Natty, and Bodhi is taking the place of the Ubuntu 'testing' releases for the time being. Lucid is still our mainstay for daily use, but Bodhi was so tempting that it's on that Compaq now. It just works....
i really like linux but all these linux makers seem like they have no idea what most users want, just make it fast and really good with internet, you dont need all those bullshit programs who nobody uses, and flash problems thats fucked up, make shit easy to install, every time i have a problem i need to read a ton of shit that i dont really understand, im sick of it
fantastic review, was watching galactics review on distros, im glad i stumbled upon yours. Gave me a way better idea of this distros potential. Good job on reviews, keep it up.
I have been trying a few linux distro's and I really, really, like this one. ( I have 1.1) The only reason I can't give up on windows is that none of the linux distro's I have tried have been able to play you tube vids without being slow and choppy or even play video at all with skype on either of the two computers I have tried them on.
@peterjol Trouble is flash vids require more processing power in Linux compared to Windows. Dual core will do 720p and quad core will do 1080p vids without any problems. Have you tried Flash Aid add-on for Firefox? It might help a bit.
@peterjol I had a an Old PC, 512MB RAM and 1,8Ghz, not Dual Core or so... Youtube Videos ran without problems, not the HD ones, but still worked... These Light Distros like Bodhi or Elive are great for it... If you have got a Geforce 2 Graphics Card or better and 800mhz and more than 256MB RAM, Youtube works fine with flash..
And if not, Try "Minitube" , that doesnt require flash for Youtube ;-)
@quidsup It's actually 6:52 I think, but its there for sure. I have really sensitive ears due to my background. But if you turn it up and pay attention to the background sound, its faint and a girl screams. Strange... Its only about 0.5 seconds.
fantastic reviews, really, this is giving me the confidence to make the swap, bodhi jumped more than a few spots in the days since you did this review and it seems to be getting more and more popular. All signs of a solid distro,
Thanks for taking it for a spin! Really great review just two comments bout software
First - we backport _alot_ of software. You will find Chromium 10.x and Firefox 4.0 in our repositories along with a lot of other current software (such as Libreoffice 3.3 which you mentioned).
Second - PAE kernels are in the repo for those that want/need it (in fact I use one on my own system). We just don't preinstall it as everyone will not need one.
I've never had much luck swapping kernels on an Ubuntu systems. To be honest I didn't even think of looking in Synaptic to see what other kernels could be installed.
hi mate...I really like your videos...can you do a review of opensuse 11.4...as i have not seen any review of the final release...thanx and keep up the gud work
@quidsup openSUSE has the best implementation of KDE IMHO, you should really give it a try! I uploaded a quick video about it yesterday actually, though it is not really much of a review, lol.

For some reason I don't like the look of kde, Gnome 2 was great but gnome 3 notsomuch,
lxde and xfce are good but lack the modern look and don't say unity. Why has linux failed to give a good desktop for me? :(
I might try this...
memoivoila 1 week ago
They have a PAE kernel available now.

effects on the icons look ridiculous, and are slow. The very same interface has a bunch of ugly problems with shadows and rendering speed.

90 MiB? How the hell does this run at half the resources as when I run Lubuntu? It even looks prettier.
Are there any notable hiccups? I feel like there should be a catch here.
thehmmmm 6 months ago
@thehmmmm A very well made desktop environment to have such a low memory usage.
The catch is it takes quite a bit to understand all the features. I barely scratched the surface with what this system has to offer.
quidsup 6 months ago
@quidsup The weird thing is that when I installed it, it idled at around 290 MB usage.

The thing I hate most about Enlightenment at the moment is the crap-tastic themes.
Although, I hear some good ones are going to be available when its official released.

Did you have the TV on?
Cambaudio 9 months ago
@Cambaudio Ah yes I turned the volume up and heard it. Hmmm strange...
I probably left the Window open a bit while recording this vid, guess that was a noise from outside?
