Ah, Tuckermans. Fun times. The place you're not afraid to hurt yourself because if you're skiing there, it's the end of the season and you've got nothing to lose!
1. The crowd is applauding because its TUCKERMAN F***ING RAVINE. If you have ever been up there in the spring on a busy weekend, all it is is roudy middle aged people partying and skiing. Hell, half the people that I saw on the hike up were drinking on their way up the hill.
2. He took the line for the same reason as above. People generally don't care as much up there since its the end of the season and seen as an end of the season party.
That's just how it is up here. Live free or die man.
2. Why did he take that line? You can see a fracture skiers left of the rider. Same aspect, same elevation, same slope. What an idiot. This film contributes to the bad name east coast skiers have (...and I AM an east coast skier).
@mjd88: even sluff can bury people (esp. skiers/riders below). No avi should be taken lightly.
@MikePanza how do east coast skiers have a bad name??? Their actually known to be better than west coast skiers. Us east coast guys are use to constant bad weather and small mountain trails. Out west trails are more open and the weathers always great to ski. Show some east coast skiers some western mountains and they'll rock shit.
@garrett6699 grew up in vermont skiing mad river, now I'm out in salt lake for school and I generally agree with you- but west coast backcountry is a whole different ball game. never saw an avalanche in vt/nh but in utah experienced backcountry skiers die every year

Hard to decide which is more annoying - the idiot narrator "That was an avalanche!" or the cheering crowd. Tuckerman appears to have a large number of idiots! Glad i ski areas where people are generally a lot smarter and competent.
Dude you're the idiot. I was climbing the headwall when it happened and it wasn't that bad so save the drama for your super sensitive "extreme backcountry" friends. I'm sure they're probably wacking off to this video every night.
After reading the weather conditions 4/25/09 slopes were prefect for human triggered slides...he set it off, and he did well with the result of his actions...much smaller slides kill people. Yes... I have survived a large human trigger slide....I managed not get buried. I travel with a companions, beacon, shovel and skins. The most important tools in the backcountry is knowledge of current conditions. Ignorance of the laws of nature are no excuse. good luck "duDe" you'll need it.
Only the skier jumped the rock and hurt himself, he broke both his legs. I think he thought that he was going to land farther away so he miscalculated his jump and fell. The Snowboarder jumped fell and didn't get hurt. Then another Skier jumped and landed it.
ok... i was in the avalanche at the time of the THIRD one (2nd big one) and there is nothing retarded about sitting, there is something retarded about jumping of the headwall when you're not a very good skiier!
This was by far the ride of my life. Fortunately my position when it started was behind and to the right of the brunt of the slide, the runout was clear, and people got the hell out the way. Things could have got ugly, wouldn't recommend trying this. After this my day was done, sat down and watched people wreck themselves. It was a freakin' circus up there 4/25. The guy falling off a 40 foot cliff, bouncing off a rock half way down was ridiculous.
I was going to tuck this week, only a few hours away... So many fucking retards cheering... Obviously from the east. In the west people are killed all the time from avalanches, not much to cheer about
Did the skier and snowboarder who jumped the rock and then fell into the hole left by the first avalanche not realize the avalanche happened or were they just being idiots?!?
I used to ski up there in the 70's when there weren't so many crazy people up there but it's become such a nut fest that I stay out of there this time of year. I'm really surprised that we don't here of more accidents up there...that person who rode the avalanche down is extremely lucky but if he understood the mechanics of avalanches, he wouldn't have even been up there in the first place. I would never want him on my mountaineering team....
I have to agree with coreybyrnes. Tucks is an idiot-fest. Nobody carries beacon/shovel/probe, but even if it were required no one knows how to use them. You won't hear bc skiers in CO cheering at the sight of a potentially deadly event like that.
tucks is an idiot fest but there are plenty of expirienced people that stiil go into the ravine after skiing hillmans, dodges or the dutchess to eat lunch at lunchrocks to watch the show. There are some truly retarded people up there like the father and his kids playing in the avy debris at the time of the scond avalanche
that's honestly disgusting to see people cheering... it's not a joyride... that's life and death... i've skied tucks a few times and it just seems it attracts a bunch of idiots with no concept of respecting the terrain or mountain etiquette... end rant.
I can see how it would appear like that to someone who wasn't actually there, and only saw it on youtube. The boarder who got caught in it was riding it out and had his hands in the air like "yeah I'm going to survive this" and everyone was cheering when he ended up okay when the avalanche stopped. No one cheered when other folks had to get taken down in stretchers etc.
yea and the snow that was braking off was not that deep and wasn't going to burry much, so the boarder was having fun he had one of those big hand things but fell off
that guy has admitted to ignoring the ranger's advice of staying off the headwall which had a moderate avalanche rating (the word moderate doesn't do a moderate avalanche justice) and choosing a line directly to the right of a previously triggered avalanche... he was not the smartest chap out there... i know it probably sounds really cool to ride an avalanche but sweet jesus, people have no concept of the real dangers of terrain like this...
I was there standing right next to the guy filming this, and I completely agree with you. 4/25 was a crazy day up there and incredibly dangerous, and to see this guy riding the avalanche with his hands in the air was a feat worth cheering for.
That was my friend that fell off the cliff on the left (viewer's). He wasn't trying to jump the cliff, but unfortunately slipped while trying to ski into the gully and tumbled over. Thankfully he's ok though.
That was an avalanche. :D

Epic. I watched that from the lunch rocks on Sat. Any video of the kid tumbling off the 40 ft cliff by left gully/sluice?
johnatvice 2 years ago
where was that john? left gully is on the left side of the headwall, sluice is on the right side of it.

My bad - I meant Chute, not Sluice. Between Chute and Chute variation north, i think. Glad that kid is okay, looked like a nasty fall
