Pretty sad leadership. If Bo*ner could get up off his fat ass and see how the rest of the world is using transit (rail) and other alternatives to individual auto use he would have a clue how to reduce US dependence on foreign oil.
My American family would look very kindly on infrastructure supporting transportation independence eg. bike paths.
Widening highways on the other hand would likely mean displacing families, producing more pollution, and furthering out dependence on fossil fuels.
It is time we rolled up our sleeves built a national bicycle/pedestrian freeway system as we did with Eisenhower's motor freeway system in the 1950's. We can do it for the same reason: national defense.
Your comments regarding cycling are ignorant. You are stuck in the 20th century which is one reason why your party has been getting trounced at the voting booths lately. Cycling is a viable transportation alterntive for millions of Americans, but becuase it doesn't involve paving more roads are fealty to your oil/gas masters, it is child's play to you. Boehner is coming from the perspective of the 1950s. American tried that experiment and all we got was reduced worldwide influence and ruined cities. We need a new transportation system and the future is that which has been proven successful in Europe - bicycle and pedestrian friendly roads with convenient bus and rail.

Study after study has shown that widening roads does nothing to ease congestion, while alternatives like mass transit and cycling have an immediate, positive impact. And, by drumming up fear and division between rural and urban America, the GOP keeps all Americans divided and conquered.
