More than British (5millions), and don't mention the 2millions of inexperienced US soldiers.

@A1R5N1P3R Conflict in the Balkans was an excuse that countries were looking for to go to war. German rise to power and English and French opposition, to maintain the current balance in Europe, was the real cause. If you ever read the book "The Guns of August" you can see how the previous conflicts (practically back to the Napoleonic Wars), and the ideology of the people and countries really made sure that WW1 would happen, Balkans or not, there would be some other spark.

Austria looking to cement influence and control. Germany looking to go to war while others were not as prepared (Russia and France) but they WERE preparing.That is my point. Balkans or not it would have happened. You look at the burning fire and say this is what caused the explosion. I choose to look at the guy stacking dynamite.

AN1R5N1P3R would have us believe that simply because of this, and the regional differences in American English, it is a completely different language. Sorry. It's just not true in the eyes of most linguists around the world. Additionally, development of a language isn't an excuse for poor mastery of it.

@fkmzblt1 Gavrilo was a desperate man, a horrible shot, and not a leader or model for anyone. Not many will hold him up as a hero and those that do are worshiping a false symbol, however patriotic or good, it might seem. Assassins should never be held up as heros no matter which people they belong to. Doing so is celebrating the worst that man can do. I think Gavrilo provides a good understanding of what humans are capable of in desperate and fearful times. Very relevant to today.

No, wikipedia is accurate. Although Princip was technically a citizen of Austria Hungary, he was an ethnic Serb sympathetic to a number of independence movements in the Balkans. Acting largely for the interests of a Serbian nationalist group, which felt threatened by an encroaching Austro-Hungarian presence (remember, Serbia was and is an independent country), he assassinated the Archduke. Knowing this, Austria Hungary chose to declare war on Serbia, who they thought was responsible.
