Remember it well! The commercial & my new 66 GTO. I traded in a 1961 Corvair allowing me $1563:06 & giving $2770.70 diffrence. I ordered ever option that was available except air cond. which i didn't want to rob me away from the awsome power. I talking everything from 4 on floor with console, power windows, steering, seats that lay down, antenna, wood steering wheel, shift knob, ralley gauge, 3 duces, posi. trac. reverb radio, & so on. Would make telephone poles look like a picket fence. Memories
As a man from GM said on another video on yt: So it was decided to make a new car which was the GTO. "We have to make a car the we in the business call: Oh my God!"
If GM release a new-retro GTO a long que of potential buyers will say: "OH MY GOD!!! i MUUUUUUST HA´VE ONE, NOW!!!
Well your basically saying it like the Mustang. I know you might say,"Oh, why are you bringing this car up!" But if you look at it this way, when the Mustang first came out, it seemed like everyone wanted one. When the retro version came out, some old people felt young again and, like back then, a lot of teenagers really wanted one. To bad Pontiac is no more. If they would've made a retro version of this car, I guarantee you, it would be a greater success than the Camaro...
@MrDead67 You American made your own design of cars back then. Then you began to look at European and Japanese design. Stick to your own. You had a great design in the 60th, 70th. It was your identity on the road back then. It was the USA we in Europe liked! Get it back with a retro GTO Wrrrroooooooooommmm! Buyers of a retro GTO? A lot of teenagers with a new driving licens would like ty buy. But, important, the basic= not too expensive.
leave old school to the oldschool. i say they create another legacy. because the sixties ruled detroit with passion and horsepower. This new generation must come up with something themselves, not copy, or imitate.
@ Gorilla: you are lucky to have a real Pontiac GTO (I have only a toy made in Hong Kong, about 13cm long-but it's beautiful).
If you see fashion, and interior design and other stuff, you will find retro design everywhere. If Pontiac build a car that was so beautiful in the 60th-70th, I am convinced that it will be a success. To build a car with stunning design of that time. But of course it must be modern stuff inside. When they release it, I'm conviced that the people visiting the car show...
@petereuropa hey its all good man, a 13cm model is where it all begins... Thanks for the kind words. Im actually a designer with a few ideas, i could create something that people would enjoy.
@GorillaWriter I'm convinced that you could create (together with a team) a stunning new GTO. But it must be a version with 4-doors too. And also make a new Chevelle inspired of 1970. That was also a fantastic design-and also the fastback GTO from 1968. The important designer of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, said two weeks ago, that the problem with American cars is, that they don't design American style anymore. And now they want to replace New York taxis with 'box-cars'. USA, get back to USA design!
@petereuropa Honestly, im more of a fan of 2 door coupes, but pontiac had a few 4 door tempest as well, they look fabulous. The gm a body is a true passion of mine. The 70 chevelle was great, so was the 68 gto you mentioned. I agree with you, american cars need american styling. Dont worry my friend, we will make it happen once again. Just looking at my car inspires me to do that for america once again.
@harris3693 That sounds awesome, but habits are what created the weakening on american steel... people need to be less greedy and build them right here in america. American cars are what started it all in the first place(besides Mr. Benz out in Germany).
it was a two speed powerglide auto, or 3 and 4 speed manuals. let me tell you though, the 2 speed isnt to quick, your engine doesnt speak its full potential. thats why im happy my 66 came with a th- 400, three speed.
hey, you lived in a cool day, my friend. I am 18 years old, and vowed to buy a 66 gto as my first car. now its sitting in my driveway. running stronger than they did back in 66. baught it two days after i turned 18, like a step into man hood. I baught it for a dirt cheap price, since i am a broke kid with a way around cars.
My first NEW car was a 'Wide Track'- '66 GTO ...Four on the floor was standard. If memory serves the drive out cost was about $2800. It was hard to catch your breath when the accelerator was pushed to the floor.
Love the video -- my first car was a '66 GTO hardtop, followed by a '66 GTO convertible with a 4-speed, followed by a '70 GTO convertible with a 4-speed.
While I love the image of the old GTOs, for the kind of money they command today, I would take a modified 2005 GTO. Under $10k in mods gets you to 500 hp, and even then, you have spent less than $30k total!
Too bad GM just announced that Pontiac will be shutting down as a stand-alone division.
My first car was a 66 GTO, 389, 4brl...automatic on the column..bet you havent seen one like that..it was a beauty..white w/ red pin stripes, red bucket seats..dash, and would fly.
I'm assuming they filmed the car driving up, stopped it, left the cameras where they were, either took out the engine or replaced it with a car that didn't have one, put the tiger in there, and then continued filming.
@dreamingimalive no, actually what they did, is you cant see it from the shot, but there were follks or something behind teh car pushing it. if anything they sped it up to look real, and then they prolly had a mechanism under the dash for the girl to pull to pop the hood liek that. know this because ive dones shots liek this an di have a 66 tempest. haha
One of the tigers they used for these commercials went nuts and completely and totally destroyed a GTO interior on a shoot one day. Everyone was afraid to stop it so the handler just let the animal wear itself out.
Pontiac RIP.

Pontiac was an Indian Chief, 4-speed wasn't standard and you could order an automatic on the column, one of the girls in my high school had one.
I had a 1966 Marina Blue G.T.O.convertible with a close ratio 4-speed which was optional, 3:90:1 positraction and the red line tires.
It was a beautiful car, I'm 60 years old but I'll never forget my first car, that 66 Goat.

My Marina Blue 1966 GTO was my first car. It was a 4 Speed Posi convertible.
Second car 1967 Firebird 400 posi closr ratio 4 speed 390 Posi all options for speed, no ps or pb just raw power.
Had 360 hp because I straightened the rod to the secondary to get the extra 15hp that the RAM AIR cars had.
I've had Trans Ams, Jaguars and other cool cars but nothing has left a place in my 60 year old heart like that 66 Goat and the 67 Ram Air Firebird.
God were they head turning fast cars.
