Ha, it's ironic that Buchanan was considered the only person who could hold the Union together. He ended up being the wedge that drove the Union apart and into civil war. He told southerners that the North was the cause of all the trouble, then he told Northerners that the South was the cause of all the trouble. Worst president ever.
He was considered the worst of all the Presidents or was he.... What would you have done to bring the Union under control???? I would love to see a movie made of his life story... I think he was an interesting man...
@troyshereforu He's not the worst president just because he let the union dissolve. He pushed northerners and southerners farther apart. He unethically influenced the Dred Scott decision. He supported a pro-slavery government in Kansas that was obviously fraudulent (6,000 votes were tallied in the election, but there were only 1,500 registered voters in Kansas). He was an enemy of democracy. He and Pierce are the two worst presidents in American history.
@troyshereforu But the absolute worst action (or inaction) as president was his non-reinforcement of the southern arsenals after Lincoln won the 1860 election. If he had done that, there wouldn't have been a civil war because the south wouldn't have had any weapons.
James Buchanan refused to use force to stop Southern secession and respected the 10th Amendment.

Lincoln still would have won even if the democratic party stayed united.
