Columbia did not take the same care in making their serials as did Republic. That's why their production values were shabby. Also, this was during the war when raw film stock was hard to come by and the prints which were made often were very dark and hard to see in a darkened theater. After all, once a print had made the circuit of the theaters, it was put back into the studio vault or disposed of for the silver nitrate.
@ysbaddaden2003 Lee Zahler was the musical director at Columbia for these serials. While he did borrow portions of classical themes to use in the serials, I believe that the Batman theme was original. According to Bill Cline, serial historian, Zahler "created a feeling of haunting mystery (with) the use of a sustained violin tremolo passage similar...to Carmen...but backed by a rumbling ochestral vibrato (similar to) Richard Wagner.

I think they're choice of music was ideal, much better than the Adam West show, and prescient of Elfman's themes.
Come to think of it I think the theme is Wagner, and Danny Elfman's theme was called Wagnerian by some critics.

Oh please, Elfman is more Bugs Bunny then Wagner.

Your knowledge base reminds me of film music expert Jon Burlingame. No small compliment, that.
There is a comic artist today named Thom Zahler. I wonder if he is a descendant.
