If Obama doesn't believe in God, or does believe in gay marriage, it doesn't matter. He's not going to go back on those things now after claiming them for so long, even if the winds of sentiment change.

its funny in Polish laguage cynic means someone who is ignoring values that are in society. So pretty much in polish laguage penn is a cynic. I personally think politicians do lie. At least use language manipulation, they talk to two different groups of people and each group hears whatever it wants. They talk to educated people mentioning history and to red necks with emotional speech and saying less information. Also do lie to get elected on certain issues.
In Canada, where I am from, it is often said that , "You don't vote for someone, you vote against someone." Enough Americans voted against the Republicans this time around for the Democrats to win. I believe Obama had little to do with it.
Whats wrong with praying? How come religious people always pick on the smarter class of Atheists. Only to have the " Smart Atheists " come back and make it a brother/sister 3yo fight.
Pick something, stick with it and shut the fuck up.
@Johngotowned. Well - praying displays the reason of a 3-year old - why would anyone pray to something that can't be proven to be real...it's so simple...Let me ask you...why must you have a master? Is it because you can't find "the answer"...so you illogically assume that someone else (that you can't see) MUST have it? There are a billion things to believe in and pray to that you can't prove...why pick "god?" Because 1 book taught you to? Your faith is based on paper. There is no way around it.
lol Your not a cynic. Your circle choose you to be in their circle because of your skeptic nature, and they weren't in power. Now that their man is in power, they want to shut you up by calling you cynical. Welcome to politics. This is why I'm not politicial.
and now we can look back on this video and realize that obama didn't hold national prayer day, and hasn't attended a single day of church since becoming president...but that doesn't mean he doesn't believe. It does mean that he's not bush though... so it is a change you can believe in.
Is that why Bush never heard "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S.".
Oy... the way I see it. The less religion the better, but as long as he does his job, I don't care if at the end of the day he sacrifices a chicken to the god of love and fucks a bunch of 18 year old virgins. Hell if the virgins are into it...
CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision. - The Devil's Dictionary
And how can people say "he's not really religious" or "he's not really against gay marriage"? Sounds to me like some people are just trying to save a little face for electing someone they didn't know all the full facts on lol.
They called George Carlin a cynic, and his response was brilliant. "Cynical' is a word that I apply to people like the Ford Motor Company, who chose to continue to make the Ford Pinto when the gas tanks were exploding 'cause it would have been cheaper to pay off the widows than it would be to retool. That's cynicism. [I categorize myself] as a skeptic, and a realist. ...I buy the fact that...there is a definition of 'cynic' that fits me, and I'll take that."
Though, I kind of agree with your solution, i don't think its as simple at you present it. There is a lot of misinformation on the side effects of pot, especially in regard to the human memory. I believe that a person should be able to do that stuff, but I have trouble believing that people would take responsibility for what they lose out biologically, I think people should have the right, but services and employers should also have the right to discriminate based on it.
I'm not sure what to think about our New Chief - it's almost as if they sort of fish-dangled him in front of us - and we're too pussy to resist. He's won in popularity by far - and he could give elocution lessons to a Bush - but something about him sits too well. I'll go as far as to call myself a cynic.
Another weird thing is - alot of media seems to be trying to discredit celebrity input - as if you guys didn't know what you were talkin about.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He's trying very hard to bring together a bitterly divided nation, which is why he's so religiously inclusive. Without a doubt he's the most atheist-and-gay-friendly president ever.
Yea, the latest hip economic theory is from each according to his ability to ea.. oh what's that? Oh heh, it's a new guise, I mean, it's a totally new economic view. Totally new.
Can Obama be compared with a medium? Spitting his cancerous, sugar coated crap on the audience. Maybe we need to get some enthusiastic scientists who will ignore the sugar cote and dive straight into the crap, and we might get to know how full of bullshit Obama really is. March 15, Obama deception, Alex Jones.
i8studnu, just how stupid are you? You want to see a transitional fossil? TRY GOING TO THE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY IN D.C. FOR FOR EXAMPLE! TALK TO A PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY AT A MAJOR COLLEGE AND THEY WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SHOW YOU THEIR COLLECTION OF FOSSILS.
Chicken or the egg? Are you serious? Well, the latest data suggests that any living creature in its embryonic form is a major clue as to how it evolved.
Try ACTUALLY researching the subject that has even saved your own life.
I think that creationism is under-estimated, by Penn and Teller as by many creationists. I don't think most people get it. Believing in evolution is so fucking so incredibly fucking beside the point.
The question is whether YOU know the evidence. Not whether you are persuaded, but whether you have intimately come to know it yourself.
Well if I thought you were serious, I just might do some research into neptune. You'd still be an ignoramus (or making a fool of a fool - which I am) but I'd know a little more about neptune and the epistemology of planets. See?
Truth be told, I don't remember writing that post. But thanks for putting it in doubt... It reminded me it existed.
Abiogenesis is an arbitrary guess that "if you wait long enough, a pool of random chemicals will eventually form a living cell." The closest thing to a test they've done for this is attempt to produce proteins from such a "soup" ... they found it could NOT be done if there were any oxygen or UV light.
If they can't even reproduce the production of a single protein, how do they assume they could produce a DNA strand, a cell, and have that cell come alive? They can't even make a protein.
that's pretty much a recap of exactly how russia tried to pull off communism.
The answer is in a more powerful, but more regulated government. If anyone holding a public office was not -allowed- to have any other job (since it would be a conflict of interest), that would solve a LOT of products.
It's just like how all employers make you sign a contract saying you won't work for a competitor at the same time (can't work at Office Max and Depot at once).
what to believe these days its your opinion just choose what you believe in if you think obama is not getting to much ahead of him self i say he should take it on one thing at a time,he says his gonna fix alot of the problems but there's long list
Yeah, the stuff at his inauguration did get on my nerves a bit too, but then, I think there are two factors that go into that, 1 being that that's part of the ceremony, he didn't really get to pick it, 2 if he didn't go along with it, let's face it, not a lot of people would have voted for him, at the same time, I hate the way our government is so damn Christian! What happened to the separation of church and state? and yeah, the gay marriage thing is really just really pathetic to me.
This guy is an idiot. Never did drugs, never drinks and doesn't have any faith. Uptight A-Hole who needs to get laid. Oh, and get a hair cut dude unless your Vegas show includes a Janis Joplin tribute. Oh and the reason Teller never talks is because Penn has an electrode attached to his balls so he won't take up any stage time.
Wow. Could you be any more of a complete asshole? Penn... uptight? Are you kidding me? So just because a person doesn't drink or do any drugs, they're uptight? And what about the long hair? Who the fuck are you to say whether he can or cannot have long hair? Sorry he's not just another prick who thinks "Men having long hair is wrong & only women should have long hair." It's HAIR for fuck sakes. Teller doesn't talk because it's a GIMMICK for the Penn&Teller shows. When not doing a show, he talks.
Obama is a good example of trying to make sense out of everything. Too many people and 99% of Youtube are one way or the other with no debate. Everyone thinks they have no need to think differently. Sure he is out to make everyone happy, but I think he truly does empathize with both sides. Why not?
Why waste so much time and not get something out of it? Everyone has to take a side like it's high school football. Get to know other people and get past criticizing each other and move on.
First of all: you're cool. Ok? I mean I want to make it clear that I believe you're a really great guy. Sometimes I agree with you, and even when I don't, I always find it easy for me to respect your point of view.
Regarding Barack Obama: you're probably right--he probably really *is* religious just as he says he is. Not all Christians are exactly the same though. IMHO, you're friends that say Obama isn't religious are practicing icky wishful thinking.
Cynic--one who believes all people are motivated by selfishness...one who is correct! Own it Penn, be correct.
Social acceptance and personal integrity are paramount to ALL human brains, and such brains will do ANYTHING they need to do to acquire and maintain these things--ANYTHING!
Philanthropy? Phewy! How many philanthropists ever spent a dime on studying how philanthropists can arise in a society? None. Why? Because philanthropy is the height of selfishness.
flang- you obviously lack of historical events. the term sodomite refers to the fact that they were "screwing each other in the ass" as you put it. That is such a disgusting act- no wonder God is disgusted with it. God created sex for one man and one woman for pro-creation. you are so ignorant.
Hmmm, and here I thought we came about through evolution and other natural phenomenon that we can prove through scientific evidence.
Sorry bucko, but Yahweh creating a man from dirt & creating a woman from a rib, etc. makes absolutely no sense. Try reading a science book or two, not just the "holy" Bible.
"evolution" and "prove through evidence" don't go well together. You realize macroevolution has never been observed... ever. No matter how many generations, one kind has never been seen to produce another kind. And we still don't have even a GUESS, let alone "evidence" for how the first cell which would have evolved got here. There was nothing alive, and then POOF... living cell... which some how survived and reproduced. Evolution requires as much faith as creationism.
Are you kidding me? Heard of a little thing called abiogenesis? Please speak to a biology professor at a major college. Better yet, the internet is FULL of information on the subject (from CREDIBLE sources, mind you). You do understand that evolution is the basis of modern biology? The very vaccines that keep you alive were developed through the process of evolution.
"No matter how many generations, one kind has never been seen to produce another kind."
Just because you can't or won't understand the evidence doesn't mean its not there. Your post shows you have no concept of the theory that you claim doesn't stand up. Idiot.
Penn is correct to question Obama because Obama is a fraud. But Penn supporting homosexual marriage is deluded/ if homosexuality is ok, then God owes Sodom and Ghommorah an apology for destroying them
Early views regarded sodomy as "wickedness" and not anal sex.
"God" destroyed the city of Sodom because the inhabitants were wicked, not because they fucked each other in the ass. They mistreated each other and the angels and did not care for the commonwealth of their fellow man. That is just the Biblical interpretation, it differs between religions, so to pinpoint one is naive.
Look who the fuck cares whether Obama is religious or not, in the face of of such hard and trying times anyone who wastes their breath agonizing about such trivial issues isn't a cynic, a realist etc. they're simply too lazy, self-absorbed or parochial to step outside themselves for once and actually devote their energy to a real issue which might require some real effort and critical thinking.
Unless you are running in a very liberal distract any politician running for anything higher than dog catcher has to proclaim to be christian or jewish. And the smartest of them are neither.
As for gay marriage I don't believe government should be involved in marriage at all. The State should only sanction civil unions rather straight or gay. All legal rights such as visitation rights, etc, should be established through civil unions. After that to find go find a church to preform a marriage.
Does Penn ever talk about monetary policy and it's relationship to the state? I just started watching. It seems that he analyzes things with clarity but ignores the mathematics driving the state. I would really like to hear him talk about monetary systems and economics schools.
Because he is a clear thinker and it translates into what he says. He's not a politician either, but I'll listen to his political commentary. Any discussion of politics is useless if it ignores economics. Since Penn is verbally opinionated I thought he might also be inquisitive enough to arrive to that conclusion. Probably too much to hope for.
Napstrpsx - Penn has a video where he reviews the films of 2008 and says that Religulous is the film "Penn & Teller" should have made but Bill Mahr might have done it better.
Its kinda funny. I live in Arkansas and Im sorta living through the exact opposite. Everyone here has been loving Bush and now those people who was all America do or die are now very down on it here..lol... Its kinda strange -maybe I should switch places with you Penn :)
flimflam0069, I think what you read is correct, but don't you still have to ask yourself why they want the land and food, why they want to change the races and cultures? And isn't that almost always then going to be Religion? The first thing countries did when trying to establish new territory was to send missionaries to convert people. If that didn't work, they fought them and converted, or just used the good ole' standby of the inquisition. I think you're right, but wrong too.
Actually most anthropologists believe, and apperently through studies show that in the basics wars are almost always fought because of land, food, politics, race, or culture clashes, and that religion penetrates all of those creating the illusion that it is the propagator. Though I agree that it should not be a societal entity at all, and more of a spiritual endeavor.
I can't argue with what you say, Penn, but call me a cynic if you have to because I don't see how anyone can say some of the things Obama has said about religion and still believe it enough to really go along with all the endless talk he spews about it, and the endless arguments over whose pastor said what during the campaign.
Though I think Obama is for bigger government, and that's mostly why I don't like him.
Just so my idea is out there, I am for the most part in agreement. I'm not sure if Obama is religious, but I do think that politicians do embellish their beliefs to get elected.
i don't think you're mean spirited...but i do see how some would think that...you're honest about how you feel and that's a rare thing in this politically correct world...i'm not a christian, muslim or jew...nor am i an atheist ( antitheist) i do disagree with several of your posters here though in that obama is for bigger gov't...i tend to share alot in common with liberetarians(sp) i'm a secular conservative...obama is the oposite of both
Not to mention what it says about your hardcore friends, who voted for someone who they believe lied about his ideology, "to get elected", as you put it. Now THAT is cynical.
I'm an atheist for Obama. I did feel good about our shout out, but your buddy was right in his analogy. The Bushes thought they had direct communication with god; that inhibited our advancement. Obama is a far cry from that. He's pro science. That makes me happy. More regulation on the greedy bastards that got us into this mess is acceptable to me. Even as I am jealous of my civil liberties, I don't think people can be trusted to do the right thing with large sums of money, obviously.
Maybe, Sir, they see something you don't. Maybe you are projecting your honesty and values onto Obama. As a xian, I do not believe Obama is one. And I agree with your atheist friends.
All I know for sure about Obama regarding Atheism is that his mother was an Atheist, and that he doesn't act ashamed about it or anything.
As far as gay marriage goes, his hands are pretty much tied politically. If this latest election cycle has taught us anything, it's that gay marriage is still not a popular idea amongst voters.
I think Obama is a closet atheist. He was turned from a skeptic atheist to a believing theist by Rev. Wright when he saw the good that the church was doing to help black kids understand they don't have to be pimps and whores and that there is a future for them if they work hard.
As far as gay marriage... he just hasn't heard the right arguments yet IMO. I honestly think I could get him to philosphically support gay marraige, but politically it would probably be suicide.
This stuff always gets tricky: how much was spin, how much was legit, etc.
Admittedly, even with these shortcomings I still feel Obama will wind up being the better long term choice for the US this go around. No doubt he's going to pass policies that not everyone agrees with (the "same but equal" standpoint irks me for instance), but overall so long as the majority (preferably all) of his decisions are based on fact and not faith then things will be a sore sight better.
Penn, He said he was a Christian. Were you listening during the campaign? I certainly was. You are not being a cynic, you are just now realizing what you got in your new president. So many others are waking up as well. How lovely for us all.
I can see where some Christians are against gay marriage as I think it's more to do with the vagueness of the term gay marriage as in if legalized that means all faiths are bound to allow such marriages on their property. Which IMO is a violation of the first amendment. I just think if they add a provision that religious institutions can allow or deny a gay wedding on their property then there ought to be no problem with gay marriage.
The greatest thing of a New candidate with no background(Obama) everyone believed they were liars to get elected, but o no, once their elected they will be truthful, honest, and magically believe everything you believe in.
Example:Religion, Foreign Policy, and so much more.
O.K. forget cynic how about misanthropist. If you had the most difficult job in the world, President of The United States of America even an atheist would pray. Perhaps not pray to a god, but to something. Or perhaps she/he would simply sit in a dark corner and say Mommy.
I dont think that anyone could sit in the chair in the Oval Office and be agnostic or atheist. They might say they are, but in reality, no.
Spoken like a true religious person. Someone who wholeheartedly believes in a God can't really imagine NOT having that crutch to lean on. As an atheist, I can totally imagine doing something like that without any help from a higher power, and I'll go one step further. I don't think I could really in my right mind pray to something I don't believe in, I'd see it as counter-productive and a waste of time.
I could be wrong but 'cynical' strikes me as having a more pessimistic connotation than 'skeptical.' Not only as cynics skeptical, but they are comfortable that way and want to maintain that position because they believe everyone is basically ignoble. Skeptics are responsive to change and their positions being falsified. That being said, I oddly enough think our country could use more cynics because they don't let anyone get away with everything because motive is always in doubt for the cynic.
Ok, Micheas and ImJust, I think I got it now. So basically skepticism is the first stage in cynicism. Sometimes you remain skeptical sometimes you move on to being cynical. Right?
Actually Cynics tend to already assume the negative, without asking questions. Skeptics are sort of like agnostic, not believing in one or the other, but open to suggestion (and proof).
Obama stated that his faith is Christianity, OK. But, Christians are very anti-abortion. Yet, Obama is very pro-abortion: His first few days in office he overturned a provision against funding International abortion. The U.S. is broke, but he feels we should pay for abortions around the world? And he's a Christian? Huh? But against gay marriage? Huh? I can't view these as the actions of an "honest man". I think he's just another political playa or worse. You're not cynical Penn - just smart.
Point of order: not all Christians are anti-abortion. Many believe it's a choice between a woman & her god. Of course, they all believe she's gonna burn in hell for allowing a doctor to kill her own offspring, but at least it'll be in a controlled environment & she won't accidentally commit suicide in the process w/a coat hanger. That'd be two sins. I didn't say not all Xians are judgmental. I just said they're not all anti-abortion. They also don't all admit they know the doc's evil incarnate.
So not all Christians believe X, but they ALL believe Y? No, we don't think they'll "burn in hell". Ridiculous. Each person is an individual, you're generalizations are silly. No offense. Abortion: It is also silly to assert that every single woman would commit suicide or seek a wire-hanger without abortion. But, they might be more careful to begin with if abortion was limited to only those in extreme situations [rape, etc]; not merely those of inconvenience which is the vast majority of cases.
womeon might have a little more respect and not be whores, but liberal left is here to make sure women dont have any respect for themselves and that men dont believe in family or values..at least the stupid men that had the same liberal parents growing up.
I don't think any of us really has the inside scoop of what it is going on in another person's head. Certainly even Hillary Clinton said to Ellen DeGeneres that she had no intention of legalizing gay marriage. I don't know that it's really on the cards for the democrats.
I don't care if Barack prays, as long as he acts. Bush on the other hand, prayed, and that was it. He "prayed" for the Katrina victims. Praying is almost as good as....HOPING it were so...
So is it cynical to think that DC will screw us out of every liberty, when they continue to demonstate it ?
OR.
Am I skeptical in not believing anything they say? AND assuming they'll screw us out of every liberty they can, because they continue to demonstrate it?
Yes it does. Hehe. We agree on one point. Belgian patriotism is nonexistant. If there are patriots here, they want to break up Belgium and join the Netherlands/France. :)
Obama just doesn't suck major donkey balls like Bush, McCain or Palin, and people are over-enthusiastic about Obama as overcompensation. American Bible beating rednecks are the problem.
I heard that you sucked donkey balls though! As much as I dislike dirty rednecks even they would be smart enough not to pass a 1071 page $700 + bill without reading the whole things. YOU STUPID COCK FED SHIT LICKER!
My point is that religion (especially these evangelical fucks) messes up the political spectrum in the States. I'm not cheering on this personality cultus of Obama, quite the contrary.
Yes, we also have our religious nutjobs, they're called muslims. :/
I see.................may I overreacted when I called you a STUPID COCK FED SHIT LICKER! At least over there you can sit back and watch the USA crumble. Soon we'll be socialist, and eventually a communist country.
I think Penn is a skeptic with kind of a mean streak, which I like, but not always consistent. For someone that's opposed to big government I've never heard him bitch about military spending.
Regarding Obama: what's the confusion? He's always said he was a Christian and intended to use government.
Also I think a lot of the Obama <3 is based around the idea of the younger generation having to sit through two bush jr administrations. 8 years is an entire generation of teenagers growing into adulthood (and voting age), and a younger president could have galvanized a lot of new voters.
Somebody more older, like our friend PJ has more historical personal experience to draw upon, and so if he's not part of the Obama bandwagon, is it really that surprising?
Just a shout out is not a big deal on its own. We'll need to see if he actually cares enough to try to sway our vote. Because non-believers vote as a bloc.
Obama attacked cynics in his inauguration speech. Now if you dissent, you are considered a cynic by his followers.
What obama has done, is offered a rhetorical suggestion, "change" on which his supporters have projected their own "hopes" which is why they don't believe you when you point out specific policy beliefs.
A skeptic demands real proof, or actions to back up promises. A cynic is someone who is very cynical (well, yeah), and will doubt just to be a doubter, sometimes, or will just have difficulty trusting in anything. There is a fine line between the two.
i dont think your a cynic at all. i think you just look at the world from a worldly perspective which would make anyone sound cynical cause of the worlds current detrimental state.
It appears that Penn wants to disbelieve everything (in this case about Obama) especially being there is SUCH massive hype surrounding the man. However I think Penn just analyzes things closer than most people and makes his decisions based on each item rather than a broad blind acceptance that if A is true then B is also true.
Doesn't a mean spirited skeptic = a cynic? Penn, are people really calling you dumb for not agreeing with everything Obama says? Do they expect you to pray too?
OMG LOL 2:25! Penn, no I guess you can't be a cynic if you are that naive. The Clintons are known to be pathological liars. Bush/Cheney lied like all get out. There is no way that a nation of 85% Christians are going to elect an atheist because they think atheists have no morals because they don't believe in a magic sky daddy. I hope to god that Obama and most other politicians are lieing about their faith.
If Obama doesn't believe in God, or does believe in gay marriage, it doesn't matter. He's not going to go back on those things now after claiming them for so long, even if the winds of sentiment change.

He's won in popularity by far - and he could give elocution lessons to a Bush - but something about him sits too well. I'll go as far as to call myself a cynic.

Obama's very pro-gay-agenda:
1) Sponsored legislation in Illinois that would ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
2) Human Rights Campaign scored him 89/100 for gay and lesbian voting.
3) Wants to strengthen hate crime legislation
4) Extend employment nondiscrimination laws to include sexual orientation
5) Repeal "don't ask don't tell"
6) Gay adoption rights
7) Opposed federal marriage laws against gay marriage
8) Wants to federally equalize civil unions with marriage

I think that creationism is under-estimated, by Penn and Teller as by many creationists. I don't think most people get it. Believing in evolution is so fucking so incredibly fucking beside the point.
The question is whether YOU know the evidence. Not whether you are persuaded, but whether you have intimately come to know it yourself.

Get to know other people and get past criticizing each other and move on.

bulkman61 3 years ago
Hmmm, and here I thought we came about through evolution and other natural phenomenon that we can prove through scientific evidence.
Sorry bucko, but Yahweh creating a man from dirt & creating a woman from a rib, etc. makes absolutely no sense. Try reading a science book or two, not just the "holy" Bible.
MagnusIan 3 years ago
"evolution" and "prove through evidence" don't go well together. You realize macroevolution has never been observed... ever. No matter how many generations, one kind has never been seen to produce another kind. And we still don't have even a GUESS, let alone "evidence" for how the first cell which would have evolved got here. There was nothing alive, and then POOF... living cell... which some how survived and reproduced. Evolution requires as much faith as creationism.
dasgregorian 3 years ago
Are you kidding me? Heard of a little thing called abiogenesis? Please speak to a biology professor at a major college. The very vaccines that keep you alive were developed through the process of evolution.

bulkman61 3 years ago
Early views regarded sodomy as "wickedness" and not anal sex.
"God" destroyed the city of Sodom because the inhabitants were wicked, not because they fucked each other in the ass. They mistreated each other and the angels and did not care for the commonwealth of their fellow man. That is just the Biblical interpretation, it differs between religions, so to pinpoint one is naive.

After that to find go find a church to preform a marriage.

flimflam0069, I think what you read is correct, but don't you still have to ask yourself why they want the land and food, why they want to change the races and cultures? And isn't that almost always then going to be Religion? The first thing countries did when trying to establish new territory was to send missionaries to convert people. If that didn't work, they fought them and converted, or just used the good ole' standby of the inquisition. I think you're right, but wrong too.

coka5841 3 years ago
Actually most anthropologists believe, and apperently through studies show that in the basics wars are almost always fought because of land, food, politics, race, or culture clashes, and that religion penetrates all of those creating the illusion that it is the propagator. Though I agree that it should not be a societal entity at all, and more of a spiritual endeavor.

All I know for sure about Obama regarding Atheism is that his mother was an Atheist, and that he doesn't act ashamed about it or anything.
As far as gay marriage goes, his hands are pretty much tied politically. If this latest election cycle has taught us anything, it's that gay marriage is still not a popular idea amongst voters.
lednerg 3 years ago
I think Obama is a closet atheist. He was turned from a skeptic atheist to a believing theist by Rev. Wright when he saw the good that the church was doing to help black kids understand they don't have to be pimps and whores and that there is a future for them if they work hard.
As far as gay marriage... he just hasn't heard the right arguments yet IMO. I honestly think I could get him to philosphically support gay marraige, but politically it would probably be suicide.
makaisenki 3 years ago
This stuff always gets tricky: how much was spin, how much was legit, etc.
Admittedly, even with these shortcomings I still feel Obama will wind up being the better long term choice for the US this go around. No doubt he's going to pass policies that not everyone agrees with (the "same but equal" standpoint irks me for instance), but overall so long as the majority (preferably all) of his decisions are based on fact and not faith then things will be a sore sight better.

LisaJMoore 3 years ago
I can see where some Christians are against gay marriage as I think it's more to do with the vagueness of the term gay marriage as in if legalized that means all faiths are bound to allow such marriages on their property. Which IMO is a violation of the first amendment. I just think if they add a provision that religious institutions can allow or deny a gay wedding on their property then there ought to be no problem with gay marriage.

O.K. forget cynic how about misanthropist. If you had the most difficult job in the world, President of The United States of America even an atheist would pray. Perhaps not pray to a god, but to something. Or perhaps she/he would simply sit in a dark corner and say Mommy.

SnakeOilSam1 3 years ago
Spoken like a true religious person. Someone who wholeheartedly believes in a God can't really imagine NOT having that crutch to lean on. As an atheist, I can totally imagine doing something like that without any help from a higher power, and I'll go one step further. I don't think I could really in my right mind pray to something I don't believe in, I'd see it as counter-productive and a waste of time.

I just like how everyone wants to think that religion puts a stamp on what their values are. For example...
Jewish = Cheap, eats kosher, and in some nations, patriarchal (want females to have limited rights)
Christian = mindless rule follower, against abortion, "guided" by Jesus
Islam = terrorist, mysogynist (which means females should have NO rights).
I have an idea: How about we get rid of all these bogus STEREOTYPES first. That alone would take a good millenium and a half.

What's the difference between cynic and skeptical?
HAZIDEAD 3 years ago
I could be wrong but 'cynical' strikes me as having a more pessimistic connotation than 'skeptical.' Not only as cynics skeptical, but they are comfortable that way and want to maintain that position because they believe everyone is basically ignoble. Skeptics are responsive to change and their positions being falsified. That being said, I oddly enough think our country could use more cynics because they don't let anyone get away with everything because motive is always in doubt for the cynic.
MicheasTheMighty 3 years ago
.A cynic usually assumes the negative ,a skeptic questions the "facts".
ImJust1Joe 3 years ago
Ok, Micheas and ImJust, I think I got it now. So basically skepticism is the first stage in cynicism. Sometimes you remain skeptical sometimes you move on to being cynical. Right?
HAZIDEAD 3 years ago
Actually Cynics tend to already assume the negative, without asking questions. Skeptics are sort of like agnostic, not believing in one or the other, but open to suggestion (and proof).
ImJust1Joe 3 years ago
Obama stated that his faith is Christianity, OK. But, Christians are very anti-abortion. Yet, Obama is very pro-abortion: His first few days in office he overturned a provision against funding International abortion. The U.S. is broke, but he feels we should pay for abortions around the world? And he's a Christian? Huh? But against gay marriage? Huh? I can't view these as the actions of an "honest man". I think he's just another political playa or worse. You're not cynical Penn - just smart.
haypenny 3 years ago
Point of order: not all Christians are anti-abortion. Many believe it's a choice between a woman & her god. Of course, they all believe she's gonna burn in hell for allowing a doctor to kill her own offspring, but at least it'll be in a controlled environment & she won't accidentally commit suicide in the process w/a coat hanger. That'd be two sins. I didn't say not all Xians are judgmental. I just said they're not all anti-abortion. They also don't all admit they know the doc's evil incarnate.
ZachsMind 3 years ago
So not all Christians believe X, but they ALL believe Y? No, we don't think they'll "burn in hell". Ridiculous. Each person is an individual, you're generalizations are silly. No offense. Abortion: It is also silly to assert that every single woman would commit suicide or seek a wire-hanger without abortion. But, they might be more careful to begin with if abortion was limited to only those in extreme situations [rape, etc]; not merely those of inconvenience which is the vast majority of cases.

What obama has done, is offered a rhetorical suggestion, "change" on which his supporters have projected their own "hopes" which is why they don't believe you when you point out specific policy beliefs.

What exactly is the difference between being a cynic and a skeptic?

skeptics try to disprove

A skeptic demands real proof, or actions to back up promises. A cynic is someone who is very cynical (well, yeah), and will doubt just to be a doubter, sometimes, or will just have difficulty trusting in anything. There is a fine line between the two.

A cynic is a person who is critical of others actions. So no, Penn isn't a cynic, quite to the contrary in fact.

a skeptic won't trust that the answer i'm giving is true. a cynic will assume that i'm purposefully trying to mislead you.
skeptic = don't simply accept
cynic = assume worst of human nature

i dont think your a cynic at all. i think you just look at the world from a worldly perspective which would make anyone sound cynical cause of the worlds current detrimental state.

What's wrong with being a cynic? I'm offended that Penn indicates there's something inherently wrong with a cynical attitude: bite me Pe
