Vic firth Steve gadd sig, pro mark 5b nylon, pro mark la specials, vicfirth 2B, hot sticks 5C wood tip(XD I know) Vic firth AJ17. Plus I've got some steel tips, some felt tips but yeah I use a spread
It took me a number of years but after finding 5A's being a bit too big, and 7A's being too small, finally found the Regal Tip 8A Jeff Porcaro Signature works wonders for both soft and loud playing. It gets frustrating that not all stores stock it though, but for the time being the pack of 12 pairs I bought have been doing very nicely for me ;)
I play metal, hard rock and some rock, but still i like my sticks light, thin and not too long. So I landed on the Vic Firth SD4 Combo sticks. Not too long, not too short, not too thick, not too thin, not to heavy, not too light. Just PERFECT! :D
hey i play metal and deathmetal aswell and i agree with you, i prefer thin and light sticks i dont know why i think light sticks help with your blasting beats as heavy ones take alot of energy but i reckon heavy sticks are great for rock to give that heavy HARD sound
I play with few sticks Vic Firth:Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, american jazz aj1-6 And my first drum stick polish brand "Gładek" 135a very light and very short :)
I have used 5A's from the start, but I have started to try different styles. I went from a Vater 5A to Travis Barker Signature sticks(just to try 'em...they marked everything white!) to Vic Firth Ex 5AN's......I love these sticks. Is it just me, or are signature sticks just a gimmick to sell something with a brand name on it like Zildjian? Why use Z sticks??? Go with a drumstick brand. Zildjian makes good cymbals, not so good sticks.
This is my opinion to everyone...never use Ahead drumsticks. Why? I quote this from a professional
"When people come in here and complain about their cymbals breaking and cracking I ask them, what drumsticks do you use? They answer with saying that they use Ahead drumsticks." That's just my opinion, don't hate on me for it.
i used the 2b to increase my speed, it did work for me, know a days i buy those bundles when the stores have a super deal like, 10 pairs $10, usually they are 5a and no brand name, they sometimes last longer than the brand ones, other than that i use vater rock nylontip (in which they forgot to explain)
AHEAD Joey Jordison sticks...amazing sticks and seem to work for me...gonna try out some other Ahead signature sticks...only thing about them is they're quite expensive for drum sticks, and a bit heavier...but they dont damage your drums or cymbals any more then a wooden stick, and they'll last much longer then a wood stick...i would have to recomend Ahead to anyone:P
ya i dont have grip tape and like you said...they tend to go flying sometimes...but ya get used to them lol...but ya i wouldnt mind getting a pair of Lars Ulrich sticks...along with some Tommy Lee sticks...i want to try a bunch and then just use the ones i like the most but ya...expensive sticks...but definitely worth it guys:P
imo, and ive been playing drums for 4 years now, the shape and size of a drumstick and a stick's tip doesnt really matter, well atleast it doesnt affect my playing atall, i forget about the sticks after the 1st few bars of a song anyway
haha i have the zildjian rock dip which are like the HUGEST pair of sticks ive ever seen! but i dont use it. so u use the 5B anti vibes. the anti vibes are pretty smooth
I use pro mark 5A

good vid. one thing that wasn't discussed is wood vs nylon tips which is something pretty essential in drum stick selection.

When I started playing I played with vater and vic firth. I like 5b's for marching and practice and 5a's for just about everything else.

7A pro marks are the best
feret1993 2 years ago
so you probably should not use them if its not a perfect surface
skatemafia17 2 years ago
hey when you use a wooden tip and some of the tip kinda chips so its not a perfect circle any more does that hurt you drum skins?
skatemafia17 2 years ago
well normally not but in some cases the tips have a really bad rebound and they lose their attack on the ride and hihat
greendayjunkie08 2 years ago
Yes , an inperfect tip can create divits on the surface of the drum head. Thus this could shorten the life span of the head.

This is very usefull tbh, I've been using 5b for a while but I've moved on to 5B extreme's now.

I use AHEADs too.
I started with the Lars Ulrich-model (Metallica All The Way baby) but now i use the 5A. WITH GRIPTAPE. Without the tape, they go flying. XD
But like you said, abit more expensive, but you'll get a way longer use out of em.

A good teacher will put a beginner on a 2b stick so that he can build up muscle, reinforce muscle memory and for easy and defined rebound.
No mention of different woods?
Nylon tips?
Never did get that "what does the number and letter designate?" question answered did ya?
My students do.
