@rabbitwho Hank is a nerd who likes science. Physics is science. Quantum mechanics is physics. If you do not like these things, some of the things Hank likes you will not like. But it's okay to not like things. Just don't be a dick about it. =3
@ZephyrMoonsilver wtf? I like it! It was a joke, maybe not a funny one but I'm not a professional comedian, lighten up, or don't lighten up but just don't be a dick about it.
English major... I just straight up don't understand what is going on in this convo. I think this is one of the few videos John or Hank has put out that I just can't watch...
Came into this expecting to watch a minute or so and have it go way over my head. Ended up staying for 10 minutes because I kept rewinding to understand better, so awesome that you got to talk to this guy this makes me really excited for the future
I enjoy that the view count right now is at 14,356. I'm glad I live in a world that that many people would take 10 minutes to broaden their understanding of the world a little bit.
Because I couldn't distinguish what was being said I turned on the Transcribe function thing to find that it changed this from an informational interview into some bizarre, surreal, nonsensical lecture about finding God after he lost his son, animals injuring tops, and cannabalism as far as I can tell...
ok, i know it has almost nothing to do with what this video is all about, but I just felt like charing this - I've actually been to CERN....and that's where I found out that this subject wasn't as impossible for understanding as I thought it was....and I eventually discovered my love for physics
Hank, just so you know, I know an extremely small amount about particle or quantum physics but I watched the whole video just because it's on hankschannel and I know I might learn something
Ten minutes ago I was watching YouTube videos because I was was not motivated to do my physics homework. Now, I want to do my physics homework. Thank you, Hank and Joe.
@sugarhimonkey remember PHYSICS IS COOL! You can be superior without being smug! And people think your opinion matters (which it always does but i mean more than usual) and even if you aren't great at it just by saying "i'm studying physics" makes you sound smart! Also it is the greatest subject EVER! enjoy the homework :)
@NixLaser This is not okay with me. We need some chemistry nerds to remedy this problem. If I was to write an entry it would say "Joe Incandella discovered the top quark. Hank Green interviewed him once."
@NixLaser because it's rarely one person that discovers such a thing themselves. and most physicists that has done something extraordinary in the last 50 years and hasn't recieved a nobel prize yet doesn't have wikipedia pages.. :)
I really struggled with this video...mostly due to the sound quality. And how could you NOT ask about neutrinos moving faster than light and his thoughts on that???
It might be true that you wouldn't have had this conversation if not for your you tube following, but it's equally true that we wouldn't get to hear this without you. That was awesome. Thank you!
Subtitles will help me understand what he is talking about, unless you can't translate either. Hi speech was so muddy at first because of Skype? Or just unfamiliar. I am curious.
Hey, I know this is a pain, but could you uplode a version with subtitles? I mean, for a forigner, there were a lot of words that have a double meaning, and you dont want to get a word wrong on that topic. But thanks for ulpoding this all the same, it is so inetresting, in the best, nerdiest way possible!
When was this interview conducted? If after the neutrino that was discovered to go faster than the speed of light... Hank WTF?! You should have just asked what they found or what they think they found if you didn't want to speculate.
@peterjjune No, he should not, for the very good reason that it's unlikely to be more than a data error. Like the thousands of 'revolutionary discoveries' before it. If they can replicate the effect many times then sure, he should definitely talk to the eminent particle physicists about it, but as is? Not so much.
@leaguesmanoframsgate that is for the scientific community to discuss and portray to the world. And if he believes it to be an error/miscalculation let him state that.
Empirical basis; yeah we have to test things out hundreds of times before we can prove it, but there is no need to say: "It could be wrong so we won't discuss it."
Imagine sitting in front of Albert Einstein a week after he put together the theory of relativity & not mentioning it. And at that point no one could prove it worked.
@peterjjune I see your point and agree with it in general, but really it's rather different in this context. Einstein's theory had huge volumes of theoretical maths behind it. These guys have a a really rather small increase that's well within the error bars, as it were, of the measuring equipment. It's nice to see more big physics and I hope that it ISN'T just a measuring error, but it's highly unlikely to be anything else.
@leaguesmanoframsgate Even though the increase wasn't that large, the error was even smaller. The speed of light itself was about 6 sigma (i.e. 6 error bars) away from the measured value. The chance of the neutrinos to travel with the speed of light or slower is about 1/506,797,346 with the given data.
So dark matter is something that we can't see and something we can't test for....Can't actually be proven, but if we accept it exists it all makes sense. So is dark matter God? ha
So dark matter is something that we can't see and something we can't test for....Can't actually be proven, but if we accept it exists it all makes sense. So is dark matter God? ha
