  • "It may be an effective theory inside of a bigger theory"

O.O How many times can I say "Inception"? xD

  • Wow I didn't know there was dark matter everywhere, I thought it was all out there beyond where the stars stop pulling them outwards..

  • @rabbitwho stop, pulling them outwards. punctuation

  • Yay! Hankschannel will go back down to 3000 subscribers again!

  • @rabbitwho Hank is a nerd who likes science. Physics is science. Quantum mechanics is physics. If you do not like these things, some of the things Hank likes you will not like. But it's okay to not like things. Just don't be a dick about it. =3

  • @ZephyrMoonsilver wtf? I like it! It was a joke, maybe not a funny one but I'm not a professional comedian, lighten up, or don't lighten up but just don't be a dick about it.

  • @rabbitwho Oh! I thought you were serious. xD Herpaderp. And this is why emotional markers would be a fantastic addition to written language. >w<

  • @ZephyrMoonsilver If it was funny you wouldn't need them :S I'll try harder next time I promise!

  • English major... I just straight up don't understand what is going on in this convo. I think this is one of the few videos John or Hank has put out that I just can't watch...

  • Wow. I managed to watch that whole thing and understand a lot of it. Wow.

    Also, heh. Josons.

  • CMS is my middle school(and a friend of mine won the national geography bee last year, but that's another story

  • @RiskyBrothers thats the name of my middle school too...weird

  • amazing

  • Wait.... electro-magnetism is a different expression of weak nuclear forces? How was that not a massive headline somewhere?

Man. That makes Magneto like eight-hundred times more badass.

  • I tried...but I just can't watch the whole thing.

  • Hank, do a video on why people use horrible cameras for high-tech installations like this and space missions but you have a way better cam.

  • The top quark was found the day I was born :)

  • @CheeseISlikeFEET you are the top quark

  • This makes me so happy to listen to.

  • I love how hank just sits there smiling as he listens to him ^^

  • YEAAA UCSB!

  • Came into this expecting to watch a minute or so and have it go way over my head. Ended up staying for 10 minutes because I kept rewinding to understand better, so awesome that you got to talk to this guy this makes me really excited for the future

  • Awesome video but Im having trouble hearing it :(

  • I enjoy that the view count right now is at 14,356. I'm glad I live in a world that that many people would take 10 minutes to broaden their understanding of the world a little bit.

  • 7:41 I had to pause the video because I was laughing too much.

  • The transcribed audio on this video is horribly amusing.

  • I so wish I understood.

  • Is anyone else really confused. I think my head just tried to explode

  • Very fascinating!! Thanks for sharing this interview!

  • 7:41 = win

  • this is awesome.

  • sigh... i wanted to see his reaction to the chair thing... I was disappointed

  • i know none of what was spoken...im scared

  • Really exciting interview here. I love this sort of thing.

  • Joe is kind of a babe.

  • Why is the Tevatron being shut down?

  • This is absolutely fantastic.

  • Awesome interview, Hank! Thanks for sharing! Nerdgasm anyone? HA BIS...(slowing down)...KYYYYYYY

    "Liked"!

  • I got all excited when you guys started talking about dark energy and dark matter.

  • I absolutely hate nitpicking like this, but it has to be said. One "L" in his last name. "Incandela."

  • 8:58 Don't cross the beams?

  • WHOA you're life is... so impossibly awesome

  • Skip to 7:40 for that bit your looking for.

  • @tommartin09 you're*

  • why is this categorised as music? :L

  • @UnwantedMushroom I guess cuz... He's a musician? I actually don't know..

  • The fact that I understood almost all of that (granted, some of it through context) makes me very happy.

  • "ma chair" GREEN, Hank

  • if only i had the gpa to guarantee me into ucsb...

  • How did you listen to him without a glazed, non-comprehending look on your face?

  • hey! you misspelled his name. also, could you ask him if i could redesign his website? it's depressing :-/

  • I just wanted to hear the "my chair" quote lol

  • Subtitles would be sooo much appreciated :) what I could hear was really, so I'd love to hear the rest on my shitty phone with poor sound ;)

  • Why are they closing Tevatron? It's an important thing that should be around so we can learn, right?

  • This is why I'm a chemist and not a physicist. Physicists most of the time you don't know what you're looking for :\

  • It Could just be all this talk about physics but Hank looks rather handsome!

  • Nice video, but the audio was really bad.

Had a hard time hearing what was being said, but still cool video and awesome that you got the chance of talking to him. Thanks for sharing it :)

  • Hank, tell us how this interview came about!

  • @ClocksInMyPlace I noticed that too... I almost never think like that, but yeah. Haha

  • Because I couldn't distinguish what was being said I turned on the Transcribe function thing to find that it changed this from an informational interview into some bizarre, surreal, nonsensical lecture about finding God after he lost his son, animals injuring tops, and cannabalism as far as I can tell...

  • arrgh. I can't understand anything this man is saying because of the microphone feedback and distortion.

  • ok, i know it has almost nothing to do with what this video is all about, but I just felt like charing this - I've actually been to CERN....and that's where I found out that this subject wasn't as impossible for understanding as I thought it was....and I eventually discovered my love for physics

  • 568 likes 0 dislikes!!!

  • wowsa you lucky guy hank!

  • watching youtube videos that is actually helpful to A level physics work :O

  • Hank, just so you know, I know an extremely small amount about particle or quantum physics but I watched the whole video just because it's on hankschannel and I know I might learn something

  • I wanted to understand... something... anything in this video... but... physics is the subject i got the lowest score in...

  • As smart as this guy obviously he is, he cant make physics as fun as Hank can !

  • I'm a physics student, and this is really getting me pumped for Elementary Particle Physics next semester. =D

  • Hank,I tried..but it was too much for my sleepy nerdy brain. Too many TLA's perhaps.

  • With all the technology at the LHC... you'd think they could afford a better webcam

  • I bet as you typed the description for this, you were having a nerdgasm! x

  • R.I.P. Tevatron :(

  • I am partially envious and fully happy that you got this importunity! :)

  • Ten minutes ago I was watching YouTube videos because I was was not motivated to do my physics homework. Now, I want to do my physics homework. Thank you, Hank and Joe.

  • @sugarhimonkey remember PHYSICS IS COOL! You can be superior without being smug! And people think your opinion matters (which it always does but i mean more than usual) and even if you aren't great at it just by saying "i'm studying physics" makes you sound smart! Also it is the greatest subject EVER! enjoy the homework :)

  • this totally reignited my excitement for physics after a long tiring lesson today :D

  • Off topic: Is it just me or does Hank look particularly hot in this video?

  • an interview with Prof Brian Cox would be awsome

  • Would love to listen to this, but the reverb is killing me. Do it again, and talk about...stuff!

  • #66 – Top Rated (Today) – Music

  • I wish he had a better microphone. but thank you for sharing this. It gives me strength to keep studying and learning.

  • Physics CEO of matter or some crap and they give him a crappy Xbox mic...

  • Interview Professor Cox! That would be soooo good.

  • Okay. Why does the guy who discovered the top quark doesn't have a wikipedia article about him, but Snooki has?

  • @NixLaser Welcome to our lovely society. :P

  • @NixLaser This is not okay with me. We need some chemistry nerds to remedy this problem. If I was to write an entry it would say "Joe Incandella discovered the top quark. Hank Green interviewed him once."

Clearly it wouldn't be very good. lol

  • @NixLaser That is disappointing.

  • @NixLaser one word "Notability"

  • @NixLaser I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

  • @NixLaser because it's rarely one person that discovers such a thing themselves. and most physicists that has done something extraordinary in the last 50 years and hasn't recieved a nobel prize yet doesn't have wikipedia pages.. :)

  • @NixLaser I get the feeling that because of your comment, there will be one soon. XD

  • @NixLaser Why not create one? There are thousands on nerdfighters who would contribute to it.

  • @NixLaser go start it.

  • I really struggled with this video...mostly due to the sound quality. And how could you NOT ask about neutrinos moving faster than light and his thoughts on that???

  • this kinda blows my mind. it just completely confuses me

  • so most of the universe is made up of stuff that we can't see or detect at all?

  • Comment removed

  • I think we need regular interviews with leaders in the scientific community. This was amazing to watch. Thank you!

  • Subtitles will help me understand what he is talking about, unless you can't translate either. Hi speech was so muddy at first because of Skype? Or just unfamiliar. I am curious.

  • This is glorious. Why is it so much more interesting hearing this directly from him than through a professor in class??

  • Is there a secret to splitting skype videos like that?

Can I know this secret please?

  • Unfortunately I cannot listen to this due to the sound quality

  • Aaah god. This video gives me so much hope for the future. The world needs more people who crave answers to the unanswerables.

  • And by this I mean a transcribtion, stupid german brain, doesntt know the difference between subtitles and transcribtions!

  • Hey, I know this is a pain, but could you uplode a version with subtitles? I mean, for a forigner, there were a lot of words that have a double meaning, and you dont want to get a word wrong on that topic. But thanks for ulpoding this all the same, it is so inetresting, in the best, nerdiest way possible!

  • Really cool, Hank!

The Mah Chair comment had me rolling. I had to pause so I could laugh

  • Too bad I am studying Biology and Psychologie and not Physics... ;P

  • This video needs a transcripsion :(

  • For a second I thought that were sitting right next to each other.

  • When was this interview conducted? If after the neutrino that was discovered to go faster than the speed of light... Hank WTF?! You should have just asked what they found or what they think they found if you didn't want to speculate.

  • @peterjjune No, he should not, for the very good reason that it's unlikely to be more than a data error. Like the thousands of 'revolutionary discoveries' before it. If they can replicate the effect many times then sure, he should definitely talk to the eminent particle physicists about it, but as is? Not so much.

  • @leaguesmanoframsgate that is for the scientific community to discuss and portray to the world. And if he believes it to be an error/miscalculation let him state that.

Empirical basis; yeah we have to test things out hundreds of times before we can prove it, but there is no need to say: "It could be wrong so we won't discuss it."

Imagine sitting in front of Albert Einstein a week after he put together the theory of relativity & not mentioning it. And at that point no one could prove it worked.

  • @peterjjune I see your point and agree with it in general, but really it's rather different in this context. Einstein's theory had huge volumes of theoretical maths behind it. These guys have a a really rather small increase that's well within the error bars, as it were, of the measuring equipment. It's nice to see more big physics and I hope that it ISN'T just a measuring error, but it's highly unlikely to be anything else.

  • @leaguesmanoframsgate Even though the increase wasn't that large, the error was even smaller. The speed of light itself was about 6 sigma (i.e. 6 error bars) away from the measured value. The chance of the neutrinos to travel with the speed of light or slower is about 1/506,797,346 with the given data.

  • deftahba

  • I. FEEL. DUMB.

  • damn this man has done a lot for physics

  • Its a shame the LHC wasn't in the US....it was gonna be but leave it up to our government to drop the ball on this one too huh?

  • this is awesome, thanks Hank!

  • I need to read particle physics for dummies and come back to this....

  • All the extra white noise gave me a mean headache, but I made it through the whole interview!

  • Thanks for this interview Hank, was great to hear Joe talking about Dark Matter & Energy.

  • DFTBA !

  • So dark matter is something that we can't see and something we can't test for....Can't actually be proven, but if we accept it exists it all makes sense. So is dark matter God? ha

  • As a gay man, I can't help giggling at top and bottom quarks. :P

  • Would I not be nerdy if I admit this? Ah well, I must admit, at some point I had zoned out like I usually do when my teachers are lecturing. I feel less of a Nerdfighter... :(

  • Why is he wearing makeup?

  • @HandMeThatHammer So he can look sexy. Why else?

  • @izefreeze That's a sexy fail

  • Wow. I went to UCSB and I've never heard of this guy. Embarrassed? Sure.

  • I feel like I am trying to listen to this underwater...

  • You didn't ask the most important question: How many people make the "large hard-on" joke every day?

  • @pete275 You brought up a good point. This is a very vital question. I am disappointed in Hank for not asking it.

  • I wanna be a particle physicist... :(

  • theorem*

  • can someone get a subs for this. It's very hard to understand Mr. Incandella.

  • I had to watch it twice since the first time I was too distracted by all the sexy to focus.

  • Dark Matter: the answer to why the universe isn't moving as slowly as it should be if it is trillions of years old. Which only makes sense if you assume that the universe is trillions of years old. What if it weren't? Just askin'.

  • if only the audio was better.

  • ugh, the sound in this video. . .

  • @shalcall yeah...that was my fault...partially...or we could call it equipment failure.

  • DOES NOT UNDERSTAND.

  • This video is gloriously incomprehensible. I love it.

  • camt hear anything. TURN UP THE VALUME I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT SCIENCE!

  • I got to UCSB! Never met him.. but cool.

  • Looking forward to what they publish. I might not be researching in that field (I'm in quantum computing), but it's still very interesting stuff.

  • very cool video

  • Dark matter....holy crap. 95% of everything in existence is dark matter and dark energy?! Does this remind anyone of Socrates/Plato's philosophy of "The Forms"?

  • @8Metaphysicist8

    Not in the slightest.

May I take this as an opportunity to express my dislike for Plato? Whoops, already did.

  • @nimbleline Haha, he's just a philosopher. Why would you have some strong dislike for a dead guy? A lot of his ideas were really left field, sure, but he was fundamental in the process of building Western philosophy. I can at least appreciate him from that perspective :)

  • @8Metaphysicist8

You're right, I don't dislike him or his works, I just dislike modern attempts to apply his philosophies.

  • @nimbleline I also dislike Plato though I admit to disliking his works especially this "form" foolishness.

  • Awesome interview. Though it probably would have been easier to understand with subtitles.

  • It's a side by side like this that reminds us all that the Green brothers are not that old... Hank looks like he's in college!

  • @NightattheRoses I know, right? I couldn't help thinking he looked like a teenager, especially with the unusual amount of light.

  • Hopefully I get into UCSB!

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • Wouldn't it be hilarious if dark matter was God? Or the force? That's what all this sounds like, some kind of supernatural or extranatural force that binds everything together.

  • I understood....pretty much nothing in this video. But that does not make it any less awesome.

  • Wow, deep! Dark matter kinda sounds like something spiritual.. like God or something.

  • whats holding me from falling to the centre of the earth ..... my ass ....

I dont mean to insult the vlogbrothers.... jsut decided to drop a witty remark .....

  • WOOH UCSB REPRESENT!
