With the use of dueling pistols - "Dueling had become more dangerous than ever." What a stupid thing to say. A pistol shot was not more or less dangerous than a sword strike/slash or run through. You could say the use of a lead ball added an increased danger of poisoning, but a sword wound many times would have lead to infection.
Either way, duels were deadly, unless someone is injured so badly, that they cannot continue.
@clearlogicify I guess what they meant was that a quite light slash wound was much more likely at a sword fight and after that it they only continued when they agreed to fight till death. Meanwhile at a gun fight when the soft bullet hits... that wound is deep, and the bullet could not be found until the advent of the xray.
@pocspamacs While a soft lead ball wouldn't bounce around like a modern bullet, it would likely hit something in the torso and stop (terrible injury) or hit flesh only and go deep. The path of the ball should be easily determined, but that wouldn't necessarily mean it was any easier to extract.
I forget the exact number, but think they said 1 in 14 would result in a body shot, even with pistols at there most accurate. I guess 10 paces or less would result in greater chance of a moral wound.
This is a bit of random trivia like what I noted with "Heart of Oak" in another episode, but I recognize the tune that came in around 22-23 minutes and I wonder what it is. It was used in part of the soundtrack to the movie "Glory" about the 54th Massachusetts regiment..
