Well, no, you don't have to promote oneself like a business. But if you do want a career, if you do want to be in the music *business*, it's likely a good thing to do so! That said, if a hobby is all you want, none of this matters. Just play your music, enjoy it! It's simply a matter of different folks having different priorities.
OK, artists do not have to promote themselves like a business. How they promote themselves is a part of what "consumers" feel about the artist. You and your whining voice belong in Pop Idol Hell, you and Simon Cowl can SMD!
