  • Will not see a Ford engine under the hood when hot rodded.I have seen one with a 454 ChevyMost put in a Chevrolet engine since the Chevrolet is much more dependable.The Ford O Matic was a piece of junk which I was told.College where I went,the instructor for the automatic transmissions class said this

  • @wafrederick  It is certainly true that Chevy engines are the choice of those who are intent on putting a new engine under the hood. Those original Fordomatics were made by Borg Warner, and I think they were adequate for the time and the engine...now if you put a big block Chevy under the hood, you'd want an transmission that could handle that upgrade.   • 1951 Ford Victoria HT was my first car, loved it, had a ball getting it on the road. !963 was a great year, wish I could go back and do it all over again...

  • I like seeing this kind of car. They seem to be seen far less frequently in Britain compared to the more extravagant late fifties or 1960s/70s American cars. Nice colour.

  • @rx6180 Hey, Mick! Yeah...at its introduction here, this was really a stunner...but much more radical stunning was to come! Fins were to set the tone, and this one has none...it has styling elements typical of WW2 bombers of the time, including that grillework! Thanks! :) Jack

  • I like the 51's better than the 49's and 50's had more chrome and a nicer interior and dash.

  • @monarch1957 True! There were some teething problems with the 49, like water leaks that took some work to figure out. By 51 it was a real winner! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 My dad used to have a 49 Ford and had nothing but problems with the car so had to sell it.Barry

  • @monarch1957 Hey, Barry! Interesting...I've have tended to be cautious about buying a car the first year after a major change. Things tend to go wrong after a major change on the line. My aunt bought a 49 Ford Fordor used, and that gave good service for many years...only problem was a fuel pump...but it steered like a truck..I remember as a kid the big contrast between steering that and her previous 48 Plymouth!   • First year for a hardtop for Ford. Very nice interior and it goes well with the exterior. The 49 to 51 shoebox Fords were quite a trend setter.

  • @cheddyrod Hey, Chester. Indeed..Ford had a dramatically styled "Crestliner" in 1950 and 51 as a pillared precursor to the hardtop..but 51 marked the introduction of the new "Victoria" hardtop! Hardtops were indeed hot during this period....even conservative Chrysler had them. These newly styled Fords saved the company, in my opinion. Thanks! :) Jack

  • @Sarcasticscum Hey, Nathan..it was the original 4 speed HydraMatic...GM also provided it to Kaiser-Frazer, Hudson and Nash. Kaiser-Frazer did not last long enough to develop their own automatic, but the others did. That's what happens when you're the first with something hot...the demand is there! Thanks! :) Jack

  • this looks like a car I saw, same year, same everything, but it was dirty, rusted up, and it was a barnfind, obviously it had a funky smell to the car when I passed by the doors

  • @frankisfunny2007 Hey, Nigel! Wouldn't be surprised by that..these cars were pretty common and often got "stored" without benefit of any ideas of preservation!

    I know that smell you speak of...it is indeed nasty, and says the inside is getting wet and from that arise a bunch of problems! It is really bad when mice get inside and deal with the interior! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @modelearth  Hey, Jay! Yeah, this was very stylish in its day...a hardtop with no post between the driver's and side window. I never see Zodiacs or Zephyrs..just the occasional Anglia, especially one that has been hot-rodded with a monster engine!
