When I heard about the Langley School Music Project I sought out to do a documentary on it because it was such an amazing story. Upon beginning my research for it, I was both saddened and delighted to see VH1 already covered it. At least people know about this now.
I was in elementary school in Canada in the early 1980s and my music teacher must have heard this from somewhere, because the approach (and even the arrangement for "In My Room") seems eerily familiar to me. It *does* make you fall in love with music; I still love music. Thanks, Mr. Fenger for inspiring Mr. Morgan at Parkview School in Komoka, Ontario.
Fascinating story, but I hate the way TV makes people reconstruct their actions for the camera - the DJ finding the album in the charity shop, for example. It's just so false.
With all due respect, I think you're over-analyzing. It's better to just lose your self in the story. It's better to see some sort of action then just someone talking.
@glyniss I know who Chusid is and I don't doubt the charity shop thing happened. But it didn't happen while the cameras were rolling. It's the clunky reconstruction I object to.
@Widmerpool99 Oh yeah yeah! That's hell of a fake thing. But, what can you expect from VH1, proud makers of the infamous Pumkin spit on Flavor of Love? hehe
(cont.) It was the 70's and people weren't so easily offended. Anyway, she typed the lyrics onto a sheet of paper, photocopied enough for everyone (with that wet, smelly purple ink) and she played her piano while the entire class sang these songs. She wasn't even our music teacher, she was our class teacher. It was my favorite school year. Mrs. Shaffer, you rock!
This reminds me of my 3rd grade teacher in 1974-75. She bought sheet music to hit songs like Black & White, Wildfire, Cats In The Cradle, Rhinestone Cowboy, Sing, and (gasp!) The Lord's Prayer. Yes, we sang The Lord's Prayer by Sister Janet Mead in public school.
why arent the sschools getting real and back to this sort of thing which kids love and not the crap they get buried in these days when the Bush govt cut back so many music and culture programs.

Absolutely amazing. It's as though 30 pre-pubescent Daniel Johnstons formed a Sacred Harp. And I mean that in a VERY good way.

@Widmerpool99
sometimes `chance` happens like that, an unusual album cover.. even an unusual cover of a song..
sometimes is enough to make a purchase, an from that, it would be rude not to share this gem of an album with everyone you possibly could....

@Widmerpool99 Obviously, you don't know who is Irwin Chusid. All that is real, it's been stated many many times on wfmu.

Fantastic! I am very glad I own this CD. VH-1 should be commended for doing this. Everyone involved should be very proud.
