Sadly things have not moved on like on the continent due to decades of Government neglect of the railways (amongst other things). We desperately need electrification. The Government got rid of steam and closed so called redundant routes too quickly. Steam only lasted until 1968 in mainland Britain and 1970 in Northern Ireland. In recent years, these have had to be reopened, as is happening throughout the UK. It's a wonder the UK economy hasn't collapsed with the Goon Show we have:-(((
