I would expect that a sudden disappearence of oil and the catastrophic consequences that would follow would result in a major shift in social and cultural thinking. The exposure of the utter vulnerability in consumerist way of life (all dependent on oil) would cause ideas like Capitalism and industrialization to be discredited. Green ideologies, Primitivism, Back-to-the-land movements would become popular. Renewable energy would be the future.

Just imagine what good would come out of it...

so, let me get this straight...Canada, the country with the 2nd largest oil reserves (in ground oil) and second largest producer of natural gas, in the the world, is the country that has the biggest problems coming up with fuel? and on top of that, crops, which are oil intensive, are wasted by creating biofuels....best case, it takes 1.3 gallons of fuel to create 1 gallon of biofuel..and if your only source of fuel is biofuel, you can see this isn't going to work out well...script rewrite needed

Fortunately it won't run out all at once, which means that these kinds of scenarios are unlikely, given that we can have anywhere from 30 to 100 years to work on the problem.
