  • 80 proof mixed with some Zevon makes a good night on Youtube!

  • whiskey weed and warren zevon

  • I hope you found what you were looking for Mr. Zevon. R.I.P.

  • My favorite Warren Zevon tune! Check out his son, Jordan's version on Letterman's show [2007]. It gave me chills. Warren would be proud!

  • Download Don Henley's version of this song off iTunes... stunning.

  • The Rocking Roll Hall of Fame > Is a Hall of Shame without ""Waren Zevon""

  • i heard this song playing at the end of Covert Affairs and I fell in love with it

  • @crownprincess4lyf

Terrific song by Warren, and Rebecca Pidgeon's cover on Covert Affairs is wonderful. So happy I found it here after hearing it for the first time there.

  • RIP Warren, you were a bad ass!

  • Great song, such an underrated talent.

  • Best of luck to his son, but how can Warrens work be matched or duplicated?... R I P my brother.

  • Every time I look this song up, I add it to my favorites again, just to be absolutely positively sure it's on there.

  • a very beautiful song by warren...can't believe it's been 8 years since he's been gone..

  • Truth, Beauty & Wit; Warren & his music have it all.

  • Dave was lucky,as we all are,to find WZ tunes

  • Lawyers guns and money brought me to this beautiful song cant go back

  • Is that look at 56seconds really good 'playing to camera' or is that the gold we all see in Warren? (all of us except for the four F-wits who posted dislike)

  • my dad has his Genius compilation , this is my favorite song off of this album

  • If there is perfection in songwriting, this is it.

A truly perfect, moving, beautiful song, thank you Warren.

  • The best ever love song. Warren Zevon is irreplacable.

  • he was the best , will love warren forever live in philly and saw him every time he came to town when he opened for other acts or when he played the smaller venues , actually stood on the other side of his piano while he played at the 23 east . i'll never forget that

  • That is a great gift, to have seen him live. I first got into him when Life'll Kill Ya came out. Didn't hear much from him for awhile, until he died in 03 of course. Now he has taken up permanent residency in my music catalog -- perhaps my most cherished albums are by WZ.

  • yeah warren zevon was great....a poet with a dark edge.He was always into small venues i saw him in sea bright nj following mr bad example album in early 90's. He was never into alot of publicity....kept his family close to him

  • Amazing

  • what a poet....

  • Now Thats a Song ! One Cool Dude with a Smokey Silk Voice...Maaaan > This Guy left us to soon... R.I.P. Warren Zevon. God Bless.

  • we can all learn a lesson from Warrens life, for instance, he was often underated but he never gave up and in the end, his last album, the wind won the only 2 grammys at the awards ceremony

  • I fell in love this last 2 weeks and he sent me this song.. OMGOSH.. It is a fabulous song.. Warren you have a great voice

  • @addmeonelove

    AWESOME!!

  • May the Indifference of Heaven come around to bless Warren Zevon.

  • I wish he and Elvis Costello got more credit for their work. They are a lot better than people like Bono who get too much credit

  • Love this man - may he rest in peace

  • @celtica99 jajaja!! thumbs up!!

  • ive been getting ready to do a new song, by robert plant "stick by me baby" and ive been practicing it a bit it reminded me of this song which i ADORE and had forgotton all about... its great thnaks for having it here!

  • @romeroisking It's not Jorge, Jorge looks like Anthony Bourdain and is taller than this bass player

  • @OurChonch wow you're right, he *does* look like Anthony Bourdain!

  • Comment removed

  • what s with the bass player? everyones in tune with zevon and this fucking weirdo is just outa place. what the fuck. it just seems to me that he s disrespecting warren.

  • @chimpvandam It might be his buddy Jorge. I am not sure though. I doubt anyone would have the audacity to disrespect the Z-man.

  • Dear God, does popular music get any better than this?, I don't think so, what happens after people of this kind of talent have gone, as Warren has?

  • My favorite love song, and maybe the reason for my insomnia. Not your typical lubby dubby crap, but spoken from the heart, the heart of a true poet (if you know even a small portion of his other works).

  • shadows on the land, certain individuals aren't sticking to the plan

  • Sublime!

  • 3 people are uncultured swine

  • love conquers all, you can't start like a car you can't stop it with a knife. such true words! love him.

  • "sittin inconspicuous" :P

i know, my favorite line is certain individuals arent sticking to the plan, id want to repeat it again too. funny gaffe, though

  • What a true gem he was. As a songwriter makes my alltime short list. An original whose like we won't see again anytime soon.

  • These live appearances kept Warren on the map. Dave was his biggest fan and did a lot for his career. Thanks David, you deserve a big thank you for having Warren on the show so often.

  • extremely touching and extremely beautiful...every time i find this song...i am surprised how much it touches my heart more than the time before! his voice sends shivers thru me..i cant figure out why i never knew this artist til the tube!

  • Beautiful. What a loss.

  • Mr. Zevon gave us so much awesome music over the course of many years; it was truly an honor to have been a part of the same generation as he!

  • I'm a single father listening to this while my daughter writes a letter to her mom in jail

  • I am going through this now. Three and a half years down the damn drain, fellas.

  • One of the best songs I've ever heard, by one of the best artists ever. R.I.P. Warren, your music will live forever!

  • Does anyone know what guitar tuning he is using?

  • @RebelHerb007 standard. it's on a 12 string so the open G octave string is actually the highest open note and it creates some confusion.

otherwise he's just playing some nice voicings

  • so cool dave dedicated a whole show for warren

  • The most underrated pop/folk musician of our times! Truly outstanding! Thank you, Mr. Zevon...

  • Just great

  • love conquers all... your songs live on warren. thanks for sharing this song blancotronCC

  • It's hard to pick a favorite song from a songwriter as talented as Warren Zevon, but I really love this one.

  • Terrific. At his mature height, before he his lungs forced him to begin knockin' on Heaven's Door. Miss him so much.

  • as good as it gets songwriting wise...

but then great talent is like great love...you cant start like a car, and you cant stop it with a gun..

Here's to you Mr Z...we're your witness, you're our mutineer.

  • wer sind denn diese armen Idioten, die solche geniale Musik nicht mögen?

  • I got Learning to Flinch for dirt cheap. Awesome album. Awesome musician.

  • you know a song is awesome when it keeps you up past 2 am almost every night of the week.....

such an awesome love song.....not that lubby dubby BS, but focuses on that pain and uncertainty before

  • have you seen Grand Canyon?

  • love this song, have been listening to it a lot lately. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Warren Zevon, sadly missed by those who ever had an empathy with his lyrics x

  • love this song more everytime I listen to it

  • you can't start it like a car, can't stop it with a gun :)))))

  • OUTSTANDING !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • What a great performance of this beautiful song. This is one of Warren's songs that should have been a big hit for him.

  • such a great song....We miss you Warren, you're still with us.

  • Just awesome....

  • Warren and his 12 string !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yep, that's the stuff right there. Jeez thanks so much to the one who posted this amazing performance. And to WZ for doing it. And to Dave for hosting it. etc. Truly priceless.

  • hes saying Moniters! Vocal! My vocal!. He probably could hear himsef in the moniters

  • Actually, it's around the 1:57 mark.

  • I can't read lips. What is Zevon saying to either the lead guitarist or somebody off camera at around the 2:00 minute mark.

  • When will the actual music video be allowed to be posted here? Warren, Waddy, Glaub, and the late, marvelous, incredible Jeff Porcaro made a moody B&W MTV-type video that deserves to be seen!

  • not sure if love conquers all, but great music lives forever...and sure the hell conquers all.

and so do the spirits of 'certain individuals'

...Mr Z..you cant start him like a car..

and you cant stop him with a gun..

    timeless genius.

  • poetry

  • You're the man warren! The world isn't the same without you.

  • Miss Warren so much -- This is a beautiful, touching song. And he was a beautiful man.

  • A beautiful man? Actually, if you read his authorized biography, he was an inveterate woman-beater, drunk, and cruel bastard. But as an artist, a hero of mine, a master, a god. Otherwise, again, a monster...

  • @hazmat70: True. And the monster asked him ex-wife to publish his diaries and a biography without hiding anything about him..."The Life and Dirty Times of Warren Zevon".

  • now thats a cool musician

  • excellent song

  • RIH!and rest.

  • I love this song.

  • check out that funky ass bass player

  • That would be Bernie Worrell. Well-known session player, and I think he even appears in Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense.

  • but worrell is a keyboard player.

  • Warren had a very unique voice. I liked his comical side on David Letterman. R.I.P. Warren we miss you. Barb

  • Seriously? What does that have to do with Warren Zevon...

  • get your damn worthless spam off this stuff.

  • Certain individuals arent sticking to the plan !

  • Best summarizing Zevon quote is from the greatest hits package attributed to Jackson Browne, I think...

''The foremost proponent of song noir''. A modern day legend.

  • Hail to the greatest talent of our time, the older i get the more i understand this song.

  • I just picked up Warren's CD "Learning to Flinch"Brilliant. He does a fantastic acoustic version of "searching for a Heart"The man was so underrated by so many. But not by us.

  • roger that.warren zevon fans rock

  • Agreed. Incidentally, the highlight of 'Learning To Flinch' for me is 'Piano Fighter' - just the man and his piano, playing up a chordal, arpeggiated storm. The song has one of the most stirring choruses you'll ever hear.(IMHO the studio version on Mutineer is way, way inferior) If you don't have it - treat yourself.

  • "Learning to Flinch" is my favorite WZ album of all. Check out the ass-kicking version of "Piano Fighter".

  • Great song.What a talent.What a loss.

  • This song is so fantastic. I had not heard it until I heard Mike Cotter sing it at a Zevon tribute in DC recently. However, once I heard it, I had to hear Warren's version - beautiful! Yes, Warren was a genius...

  • totally irreplaceable. :-(

  • I've only heard this song once or twice but i can tell u this I would give anything to know what it feels like to know. To know what it's like to leave that big of an impression or the world. God bless u Warren you'll never be forgotten. Thank you.

  • Thank God Warren never made it main stream, we wouldn't have what we have now. He was the last of the trye rockers! God Bless the Excitable Boy and RIP!

  • sorcere: You are a clueless idiot. Zevon's music relays the grit, passion and heartache that comes with life as we all know it. That is real life, not the plastic manufactured shite that you probably imbibe. Zevon was a masterful songwriter, brilliant musician and had a distinctive, raw vocal presence. My friend, he'll be missed more than you ever will.

  • The man was pure genius

  • I loved this man.

  • Crystal Zevons book about her husband WZ is not feel good reading. But if you want to know the man who wrote these great songs go read it.

  • I love you Jenny C. I've been looking a long time for you.

  • You can't start it like a car... You can't stop it with a gun...

    Amen.

  • HE IS A GOD!i mean the guy is and always will be an icon. his lyrics, his musical ability and his passion makie him the best there is the best there was and the best there ever will be

  • Brilliant!

    Raw Talent!

    Raw Artistry!

Wish I could have met him!

  • Gone home too soon. xxxooo

  • The voice.

  • Brilliant song! thank you for posting this version

  • Such an emotional singer...Love em.

  • Great singer , man. Is it better to be distinct than a diva style virtuoso ? Is one more artistically valid to y'all out there? I love Aretha too. It just seems like some people have an American Idol mindset , if you aint a diva, you suck. Lots of my fave singers would never cut it on Am Idol.

  • WZ was always one of the few who could make me cry with a song like this and then want to kick out the jams with a song like I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. 35 years after I first heard him, I still love listening and get sad when I think of him being gone

  • darkness in the mornin, beautiful song.

  • I miss Warren.

  • Wonderful song, fine performance by a great talent. Excellent edit and quality on this posting - thanks for making it available to us all.

  • ...a member of the band is wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates jersey --- quick bring back the beginning of the 90's so that i can enjoy baseball in Pittsburgh again...

  • So much truth in his words. I'm a fan of him since I was i child and I think this won't chance either. His music made him immortal and it's good to know that, whether i'm going to see him later or not.

  • I'm not much for great songs, like this one, being wasted, commercialized, by being used as part of a soundtrack for a movie.

BUT, in this case, after my initial shock, hearing it play over the ending credits of the Movie, "Grand Canyon," all of a sudden, the song felt like any orchestral music, written for a specific movie, to set the mood during the initial credits.

However, in this case, this song seemed to make the message of the movie, seem real somehow.

    Thanks Warren.

    See you later.

  • Brilliant

  • I usually go for the heavier stuff but this song really stole my heart when I heard it played on the season two finale of October Road. Warren was an amazing talent and will be missed for a long, long time. He clearly sang this one from his heart. RIP, Warren.

  • american idols contestants are souless corperate musical whores

mr warren zevon had something alot more real, and un-manufacturable: Talent and Heart

  • Warren certainly wasn't the greatest singer; he's an acquired taste there. But he was one of the last of the '70s-era singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Don't have to like their material, but you can't deny the talent that authored it.

  • I must defend big Z you mustn't own any of his albums and I bet you can't sing either

  • he will be judged by his peers not twats on youtube

  • Great and distinctive voice. One of the best poets of the singer/songwriter era. Missed by those who knew him; who enjoyed his art; who were there at the time; and who lived the life that could only be found in the canyons above L.A.

  • Sorcere, you have the right to make your comments heard. I disagree with them entirely, as I think Zevon's talent was in his performances as well as his music-making abilities.

However, comments like 'you are not missed by many' are both misplaced and flippant. Maybe Zevon's kids have stopped by this page...they shouldn't have to read your insensitive drivel.

Some advice, friend...stop watching American Idol and find some real music.

  • sorcere, Ur comment proves you are the biggest idiot on this site

  • Comment removed

  • this song sounded great when it was featured in the movie 'grand canyon'

  • i wish when i was younger i would have known about warren. 1. bc, obviously hes the best, and 2. i could have dressed up on halloween as him. people would have been like who r u. and id b like warren zevon, and theyd b like who, and then id b like im the best dumdass. and id say go look it on youtube idiot. the late 80s ear;y 90s wiould have been aweasome as fuckin fuck. rip warren. we love you

  • that monday playing the bass is awesome

  • Warren lives on with his songs

  • awe warren your heart was to big love you rip I know you up there rocking heaven down

  • One of the most amazing artists in rock history.

  • Notice how these artists never sound better

than when they perform on Letterman. It's been that way for over 25 years now. Proof

indeed that The World's Most Dangerous Band

    is a mighty musical weapon.

  • he had the look, tyhe soudn, thje intellighence, the way. what a hshame he had to go. i love him like a brotgher

  • genius. a mad fukking genius

  • I'm still searching for a heart.

  • I'm a metal head by nature, but Zevon hit a nerve in me right from the first time I heard "Excitable boy". He is by far one of the greatest songwriters in my generation. Rest in peace!!!

  • Warren Zevon was an incredible songwriter. He nailed our generation...he is missed.

  • phukkin A. what a genius that could open your mind to a different type of thinking. a genius with a demeanor of intelligence. if i had half the mind zevon has had. id be an icon

  • Is it just me or is he incredible?

  • It isn't just you

  • wow. i was in the house when the house burned down. Awesome. We all gonna meet him.

  • You can't stop it with a gun!

  • One brilliant rocker-cant wait for the vault to open-Get on the rock and rol hall of fame and demand this rocker gets in asap-deserved to be there long ago-keep rockin

  • the rock and roll hall of fame is a joke. zevon has much higher class than to be in an asinine group. dont get me wrong, some of those fuckers deserve to be in there. but cmon. zevon is the shit. RIP

  • I couldn't agree more.

  • likewise...in fact I think they should name the 10th planet ZEVON

  • ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ......!

  • Thanks...that was great...he is missed.

  • Warren's music can pierce my heart like an arrow, or hit me along side my head with a rock, and I enjoy it either way.

The saddest of all, there are no new arrows, or rocks.

    Enjoy your "Splendid Isolation," Warren,

and I will, "enjoy every sandwhich."

  • Well put. He's the only one I know who can make me cringe then break my heart all in the span of 4 minutes.

I too will enjoy every sandwich until my ride is here.

  • rockrivrvixen,

    Thanks!

But the words I wrote, were inspired by Warren's decades of emotional affect on me.

Seems he had the same affect on you.

We are so fortunate to have him share his life with us.

Take care, and if you can't, take all you can get, as I believe Warren would say.

  • Yes, I believe he would indeed say that! And only one other artist has had that affect on me, and that's the solo work of John Fruscainte of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They both have a different take on life and their music comes from that place within each of us that most are afraid to explore. Geniuses both.

  • Oh yes, Frusciante's solo stuff is incredible.
