love this song. it's been in my head for about 3 days.i'm 59 and still love toys.A good friend and I were shopping in Wal-Mart,we were seperated, she found me in the toy department. She shook her head and your worse than a kid.I was 50.
I was fortunate enough to meet the original airplane twice - once at a show in '67, and another the following year. Of all the bands I've seen before or since, none of them had the sheer juice of JA. It's true that the Eagles, CSN, Who, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Little Feat, The Dead, and a number of others were great, but at their peak, JA had very few peers. The word 'magic' ain't enough. And for the record, whatever you may say about Grace now, she was "Smoking-hot" back in the day.
Oh for the love of "blank" please people, this is not the place for Gaga comparisons! Go to the "I have roots and have turned myself into a pop diva freak show category" for that!
Grace and the Airplane defined an era of changing morals, social and political views. Yes, the Airplane did go commercial with the changing times but not before laying down a powerful statement!
And just to finish my thought, if you listen to any Jefferson Airplane Album, Grace Slick sang three songs and they were all significantly better than any other songs. It was like they treated her as a back up. Finally, this was the 60's. I mean people were focused on partying and not being great all the time. She became a legend, but a reluctant one.
The greatest female vocalist of all time only produced a handful of hits, but we can't forget the era she peaked in. The grotesquely narcissistic pop stars of this generation rely on lip synching, sex and circus shows as distractions from the actual music, Grace slick was from a generation that didn't offer a fraction of the opportunities that exist in today's 24/7 wired media. The mass music marketing machine was still in the growth stage, especially for divas. The equipment was primitive

When I was a young man, after being introduced to new coworkers, I would always ask them if they knew that Lather was thirty years old today. Only 2 ever knew what I was talking about and one stunned me by responding "and his mother took away all of his toys." He and I have been best friends ever since.
If you were familiar with the song Lather, you were definately a Jefferson Airplane fan. It's one of my favorite songs.
This is the original lead singer, Signe Anderson. This Live Performance has to be from early 1966. In 1967, the Grace Slick fronted Jefferson Airplane performed "White Rabbit" and "(Don't You Want) Somebody to Love."
I read somewhere that this song is about Spencer Dryden, the drummer in the Airplane- or at least inspired by how Grace Slick saw him. A beautiful song, isn't it. Very poignant.
I really like this song, it has an almost medieval touch and such a great overall feeling. Her voice is great. never get tired of this song. I'd like to invite all of you folks with good taste in music (if you're here and you like this :) to check my band's music on this channel - Mob of God. We're a new band, just recorded a first EP, but our main influences are the 60's and 70's plus the 90's. Thanks in advance for any views, it's an honour to have some views from JA fans.
i love the medieval or 18th cnetury sound mixed with a druggie sound too .
what is this song about? it sounds like it's about a guy getting old, who has become washed up from drugs, who is ,depressed and who is experiencing a mental breakdown.
"Grace Slick wrote/sang the wonderful, overlooked, funny ballad “Lather” about [the Airplane's drummer] Dryden, who was her primary squeeze during the 1967-68 creative sweet spot, spanning “Surrealistic Pillow,” “After Bathing at Baxter’s,” and “Crown of Creation.” An overgrown child, or lost child, or tripping child." from James Kobielus' Blog of [January 13, 2005] Spencer Dryden's obituary {a great read; google: rip Jefferson Airplane Drummer Spencer Dryden Dies... - JKobielus}

@TebanaSankichi Good call. If it Jefferson Airplane never did this song, and Lady Gaga came out with the exact same thing today, all these people saying "Amazing" and "Incredible" would say it sucks.
Personally, I do hate most of today's music... but I think this sucks, too. I'm sorry, but there's nothing overly talented about the music going on here, and the lyrics are just bad. Jefferson Airplane had a few good songs. This isn't one of them.
@dancing0being You seemed to miss my point all together. It wasn't about Lady Gaga. Let's put it this way:
If it Jefferson Airplane never did this song, and *insert name of current pop star* came out with the exact same thing today, all these people saying "Amazing" and "Incredible" would say it sucks.
In case you didn't notice, it was a reply to TebanaSankichi's comment saying "Getting kind of sick of all these "todays music suck" comments though".
TebanaSankichi's says "Getting kind of sick of all these "todays music suck" comments though".
I say (paraphrasing) "Yeah. If this song were to come out today (hypothetically speaking), the same people on here praising this song would say it sucks, just because it would be "today's music" (hypothetically speaking)."
Get it? It's called a "hypothetical situation". And It's about people saying "today's music sucks".
@sangreturquesa I'm not being a troll. I checked out a song and had a legitimate opinion about it. I decided to post that opinion. I'm sorry if you find that sort of behavior unacceptable.
@DarthMohammed you ropinion, if you even equate something like "Lady" Gaga with Grace Slick...well your opinion is laughable. Sorry man, that's my opinion. Not being a troll, you just have Zero Taste.
@welcome2myhell And your opinion's based on your ignorance of context.
I didn't equate Grace Slick to Lady Gaga. I don't like or listen to Lady Gaga. If you actually read what I said, I was only putting this in context of today's music, whatever it may be. And as I said before, it's in response to TebanaSankichi's comment "Getting kind of sick of all these "todays music suck" comments though". The same people liking this would think it sucks if it came out today.
@DarthMohammed Exactly! And in 30-40 years from now, today's youth is going to complain about the music of that time and claim how all the music in their time was so much better. Its a little silly really : )
If you have the LP and a turntable, or even a CD of the original album mix, check this song out today after 40+ years. It's not only beautiful music and vocal, it's a very nice acoustic feel for the day and sounds even better now. Listen to the words. goosebumps. Incredible band in its day and context.
Heard this song for first time the other nite.It was on the album 'hits' from jeff airplane.Found it so fascinating, played it about 5 times.Great music *
repent to Jesus christ. Jesus loves you all, come to the kingdom! the holy spirit says come! repent for Jesus christ and pray to Jesus christ. Ask him for mercy and repent. Find Jesus christ and follow him. Follow Jesus to heaven! The gospel is truth and follow Jesus today. repent to jesus christ today.
SPECIAL THANX to the Smothers Brothers for their guest performers and broadcasting groups like Jefferson Airplane or Buffalo Springfield on national television. Thats also how albums & 45's were advertised and sold to 1960's youth culture.
this was great. she put makeup on hoping it would appear she was in blackface but on camera it didn't show up & she just looked like she had a dark tan.
I love the Airplane and I think I love virtually every other song of theirs, but I HATE this! What's with Grace singing like a hey-nonny-no English folk singer??
@OrangeSaint420 purple microdot was the best, no wait, I ate something orange once, then there was that "pick a color" barrel, oh yes, the blotter, never tried the windowpane, but my buddy stuck it under his eyelid.
@pent0thal87 OOOh, sorry that i can't appeal to the music you people like. If it doesn't have any rhythm or any proper structure to piece of music then i find it shit, I'm sorry. The fact that you guys eat shit with your ears is embarrassing, but it's not like I'm complaining about it.
@pent0thal87 -- WRITED?!?!?!?!? No such word! Try WROTE. You WROTE. You've WRITTEN. But there's no such word as "Writed" ... Other than that, I agree with you. Folks not old enough to have lived through that era just can't appreciate what we lived through!
WOW, does this bring back some great memories of the 70"s I forgot just how HOT Grace was....Great song Great album Great Band, Live long and fly high Airplane!!!!!!!
Amazing song...one of Grace Slick's best...and no Grace is not black. She put on dark make-up and black gloves to most likely show support for Africans in America struggling for their civil rights...there is a video on here of Crown of Creation from the same TV show where at the end she holds her fist up in a black power salute. I heard that the whole thing was kinda spontaneous and came together when she was in the dressing room messing around with all the make-up...sounds like Grace :)
@fearrock1 Maybe because it makes you feel like you're waaaaaaayyy the heck someplace else? I mean, besides where you were when the song started. AND you don't have to be stoned or drunk for the song to take you there:) --
@artiebarnes It doesn't, good music is harder to find these days. Somehow instead of the perspective on artists in the 60's and 70's that they just are as they want to be made room for the mainstream artist nowadays that are as the fans want them to be.
Any artists out there be yourself, not the reflection that the fans think they see of you.
@artiebarnes this is brilliant I think a lot of folks miss the point. As far as music SUCKS how about Hurt? NIN and Johny Cash? JA is one of the best all time. There is still good music for us.
One of my fav Airplane song ever, so stoned out the whole thing is. And as tranchula points out, those were golden times, and yeh, we were hippies, but I think that that was a good thing to be, and still cherish it
Lather will turn 64 in January, child is the best of the compliments that you can lay on me, because no, I'm not old, and I continue to smile baby wide!!!
It makes me laugh to think that Lather was 20 years younger than I am when he asked "Is it true that I'm no longer young?". The children don't call me famous, and the old men don't call me insane, because I like the same music they do. But sometimes I still feel nameless. And I still don't know which game to play, which words to say.
Is what music producers do not understand today is that you can have a pretty face and great music. I give you Grace Slick, Linda Ronstadt and Carol King! if this were understood, we could all listen to the radio again! To hell with Lady Ca Ca, Shinia Twat and Average Lavigne.
When you can earn billions of dollars with a pretty face only, it's completely stupid and not acceptable by investors to spend additional company resources to create nice music.
The worst thing is that all pop stars today are pretty ugly, face and body. I didn't mention their music.
@ThirdStoneOdyssey I am new at this method of communication, John Lennon was hooked by Yoko Ono because he climbed a ladder to the ceiling and found the word "yes", I am equally intrigued! more, please!
Jeff and I used to trip on purple haze and orange sunshine to his sister's albums. This was one of them. We were what? 14? Yes, we were little freaks.
Dang. OK, granted I've not heard this before. But this IS Grace singing lead, right? Sure doesn't sound like her big, ballsy voice. But it's still impressive to hear her reining in the power for a more delicate statement:) --
@djCsyck She had triads with millions of long haired boys in those days, as the song says. Back then, who cares? No consequences for balling your brains out with nameless, faceless hordes of people. It was fun. Today, you fuck one time, and you get AIDS.
Grace has gone a little heavy on the fake-tan.

Lady Gaga sings only monotonous gay disco songs for smurfs, so there's no chance this song could ever be in his repertoire.
Jefferson Airplane had at least 2 great albums and this is one for me.
Today's music is not Lady Gaga. He's a sad thing from the past that all people on earth would like to forget and get rid of.

There are billions of Lady Gaga like "artists" today. There is no chance all of these to sing this song.
Even good artists of today can't sing like this. This style is 60s exclusive. It happens only once (this is the best reason why i love music).
Don't be prejudiced (>>>great comment<<<).

*sigh*

@dancing0being -- Lady Gaga is a SHE (born Joanne Angelina Germanotta). Why do you refer to her as HE?
WytZox1 4 months ago
@DarthMohammed haha
man, lady gaga never gonna do a great work like this,i think the same,''gay disco songs for smurfs''
hahahahhahahaa
and if you think this sucks, dont be such a troll..
sangreturquesa 9 months ago
@sangreturquesa I'm not being a troll. I checked out a song and had a legitimate opinion about it. I decided to post that opinion. I'm sorry if you find that sort of behavior unacceptable.
DarthMohammed 9 months ago
@DarthMohammed you ropinion, if you even equate something like "Lady" Gaga with Grace Slick...well your opinion is laughable. Sorry man, that's my opinion. Not being a troll, you just have Zero Taste.
welcome2myhell 9 months ago
@welcome2myhell And your opinion's based on your ignorance of context.
I didn't equate Grace Slick to Lady Gaga. I don't like or listen to Lady Gaga. If you actually read what I said, I was only putting this in context of today's music, whatever it may be. And as I said before, it's in response to TebanaSankichi's comment "Getting kind of sick of all these "todays music suck" comments though". The same people liking this would think it sucks if it came out today.
LEARN TO F'N READ, PEOPLE!
DarthMohammed 9 months ago
@DarthMohammed Exactly! And in 30-40 years from now, today's youth is going to complain about the music of that time and claim how all the music in their time was so much better. Its a little silly really : )

Grace was so incredible. Oh to have been old enough back then.
Still, as a child of the 70's instead of the 60's I suppose I can't complain. Still better than what came later.
ajabberwock 10 months ago
If you have the LP and a turntable, or even a CD of the original album mix, check this song out today after 40+ years. It's not only beautiful music and vocal, it's a very nice acoustic feel for the day and sounds even better now. Listen to the words. goosebumps. Incredible band in its day and context.

SPECIAL THANX to the Smothers Brothers for their guest performers and broadcasting groups like Jefferson Airplane or Buffalo Springfield on national television. Thats also how albums & 45's were advertised and sold to 1960's youth culture.

Like if you think this song is as beautiful as Grace Slick herself.

I love the Airplane and I think I love virtually every other song of theirs, but I HATE this! What's with Grace singing like a hey-nonny-no English folk singer??

I saw them do a reunion show in the late 80s (as close as I could ever get to seeing them - I'm a little young!) and they sounded incredible.

I heard that the whole thing was kinda spontaneous and came together when she was in the dressing room messing around with all the make-up...sounds like Grace :)

want to ask a question
What makes a psychodelic song a really good psychodelic song?
fearrock1 1 year ago
@fearrock1 Maybe because it makes you feel like you're waaaaaaayyy the heck someplace else? I mean, besides where you were when the song started. AND you don't have to be stoned or drunk for the song to take you there:) --

artiebarnes 1 year ago 65
It's weird, because Irish folk music sounds exactly like this and probably has for 10,000 years.
ebonics4everyone 11 months ago
@artiebarnes It doesn't, good music is harder to find these days. Somehow instead of the perspective on artists in the 60's and 70's that they just are as they want to be made room for the mainstream artist nowadays that are as the fans want them to be.
Any artists out there be yourself, not the reflection that the fans think they see of you.

@artiebarnes yea this is just amazing..im a underground hip hop fan 1st but this is some of the best

icmajik 1 year ago 2
It makes me laugh to think that Lather was 20 years younger than I am when he asked "Is it true that I'm no longer young?". The children don't call me famous, and the old men don't call me insane, because I like the same music they do. But sometimes I still feel nameless. And I still don't know which game to play, which words to say.
jeanhartely 1 year ago
Is what music producers do not understand today is that you can have a pretty face and great music. I give you Grace Slick, Linda Ronstadt and Carol King! if this were understood, we could all listen to the radio again! To hell with Lady Ca Ca, Shinia Twat and Average Lavigne.
fiendish67 1 year ago
@fiendish67
When you can earn billions of dollars with a pretty face only, it's completely stupid and not acceptable by investors to spend additional company resources to create nice music.
The worst thing is that all pop stars today are pretty ugly, face and body. I didn't mention their music.
