954 million dollors on a stupid football roof? that's just bullshit, think about ppl starving in foreign countrys, and were in another depression, that money could be better used in so many ways!!!
Pro team owners claim a major sports team brings in millions to the local area. What they don't tell you is they take billions away from the area to pay rich players and owners. Vikings say they don't need a roof and their fans will still come to games, didn't happen that way at the bank when they gave seats away to local collage kids that even left early due to cold.
As for the argument that citizens have to subsidize civic centers even though many don't utilize them, I would say that the cost of civic centers pales in comparison to the cost of the proposed stadiums and promote activities that are more intellectual and less blue-collar than sports. For a burgeoning metropolitan area economic growth is not in attracting blue-collar workers and industries but in attracting a cultural and educational elite that value the arts more than sports.
Why are people having the discussion about how much the team means to Minnesotans? It only means something to the Minnesotans who watch more than a couple games a year. For the rest it's basically meaningless unless you are part of an industry that gets a big windfall from having a professional sports team in your backyard.
Support your dome. Canada supported their dome. Do we want to seem inferior to Canadians? Also if I recall there is a group that organizes skating sessions though the dome. So no. More people benefit from the Metrodome than football teams and businesses.
@Fanik8 Packers fans have been freezing their asses off at Lambeau Field for years and u don't see us bitching about the cold. Winter is a part of life in these parts and people better start getting used to it.
Vikings are a GREAT and SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONAL football team we deserve a 900+ million dollar stadium!!! if the citizens wanna bitch about how much taxes will go up well oh well you live in a major city with a NFL team this isnt a small little town!!! this is MINNEAPOLIS!!!! if you dont like it move to Fargo and STFU
If you're going to stay in Minnesota just build another shitty dome. You don't got the guts to watch your team outdoors in Arctic temperatures like we do and have straight through since 1919.
Should you pay for a private facility? YES. That's a stupid question to even ask. The Metrodome is clearly outdated and is in poor condition. The Vikings have already said they will not play another season more after the lease runs out.
Build a new stadium for them. I don't give a shit if it's a recession. Forget for a moment how pissed a lot of people would be if the team moves. Do you know how much revenue will go out the city's door with them if they left? Just build the damn thing.
Why don't minnesotans try a mobile text donation campaign like the one they did for Haiti to raise money for the stadium? I've heard that was very successful for Haiti.
I have good friend in Mn who say's he'd like his tax money back for the Guthrie, The Convention Center. They were built with tax payer money but he doesn't go to either. Does anyone really miss the the little sales tax you pay for x number of years ? Most people waste more on crap at Target or Wal-Mart.
i honestly wouldn't like the vikings if they moved to LA. yes they might hav the same players for a year or so but it wouldnt take to long and there will be new players and a lot more changes.
Sorry but the Vikings blew it when they refused to partner with the University of Minnesota on the new Gopher TCF Stadium. As taxpayers we are already paying $10 million dollars a year for a football stadium that is used 12 days a year. Would all of you Vikings boosters please tell us, why can't the Vikings play in the new TCF stadium?
Absolutely! What the Vikings should have done is what the Seattle Seahawks or Pittsburgh Steelers did to get their new stadium. The Vikings should play at TCF Stadium for two years. In that time frame, knock down the Metrodome and build an open air stadium. Then, after the two years, move into the stadium. The Steelers and the Pitt Panthers play in the same stadium, Heinz Field. The Seahawks played at Husky Stadium for two years because they knocked the Kingdome down.
Hold on. You don't understand why an NFL team would not be too keen on the city replying 'oh you don't like the Metrodome, then just go play at the University's stadium?' You seriously see nothing incredibly insulting about that?
Of course they refused that deal, any professional sports team would. Of course they want their own facilities, and if the city isn't willing to give them that, there are cities who would be glad to. A successful NFL team is an incredibly valuable commodity.
It is quite obvious that the Metrodome cannot meet the Vikings needs much further in the future......due to revenue and the subpar standards.
This has been an issue for years and years, and not a thing has been done.
The question is this: is keeping the Vikings worth 700 million to the taxpayers? I think it is. If not, then I guess we don't think too much of our Vikings and we run the risk of losing them.
cant they just keep the dome for the vikings? the dome is (or used to be) used for so much, it's a trademark for minnesota sports. the gophers have a stadium, the twins soon will, the t wolves have the target center, and the wild have the xcel. besides, sitting in a STADIUM in a minnesota winter would be miserable for the fans. thats why the roof is useful. the state cant afford to keep spending money on new arenas anyway :l
this team NEEDS to stay! I would argue the fan base here is larger for the Vikes than for the Twins, I would be DEVASTATED if the Vikes left...don't do anything stupid Minnesota.
@romez3831 I would argue the Twins can win a game any time, same with the Vikes except they choke on ALL of their important games. So I ask you, why want to keep the laughingstock of the NFL and wish to lose the winning team?
Great to see the Twins get a new ballpark! They deserved it because baseball should NEVER be played in a dome! Why don't they dismantle the roof of HHH Metrodome, install grass and rename it NEW Metropolitan stadium? Finally get back that cold weather advantage that made the Vikings so formidable at home!!
the people of minnesota will regret this if the team ever moves. actually i see them moving to los angelos like the minneapolis lakers moved to los angelos who by the way have the exact same team colors
Not a Vikings fan, but kudos to the owner for his commitment to the Vikings fans. I agree, the Metrodome is very functional. Considering the economy, this is an awfultime to ask the public to pay for any "want". I'm glad the Twins have a fabulous new outdoor park. Hopefully, the Vikings will claim a huge homefield advantage with an outdoor stadium.
Hope you have a damn good criminal defense attorney. I can see him arguing your case now. "My client killed 15 people because the Vikings moved." If you are going to kill someone over this, please start with Zigi and Mark Wilf.
Also, I think the Vikings mean a lot more to Minnesotans than the Twins do. Plus, the Twins have only won two World Series and those were in '87 and '91. It's not like they've won anything besides division titles in the last 18 years. The Vikings have had some bad seasons, but we have some good players now and I think with the aid of a new stadium and increased revenue, we will be able to do better in the future.
I like both the Vikings and the Twins, but I don't know about your argument there. You point out that the twins have 2 world series championships and a bunch of division titles- isn't that still more than the Vikings have won?
I think Minnesotans love the Twins. They are hard working, they don't show off, and they fly under the radar- seems very Minnesotan to me.
I live in the cities and I see a lot of love for the Twins around. I think Twins fans are just laid back.
Let's put it this way... what will we do with the Dome if the Vikings leave? It will be a waste of space and will no longer be generating revenue. The only thing left in it will be Monster Truck Madness and the State Football Tournament, but that could get moved to the new Gophers stadium. I want the Vikings to stay. I would be very sad if they left and I think a lot of Minnesotans would be too. Yes, a Lombardi Trophy would be nice, but it we won't get one unless the Vikings stay.
the should move to L.A the owner of the Staples Center owns a large peice of property :45mins from downtown L.A n said he would build a 800 million $ stadium, n hotels, a whole complex for the tema that would move there, im not even from L.A but I miss football since i left Philly, this city needs a damn team! lol
Don't worry, Vikings are going to stay in the Twin Cities. If hell freezes over! Well? Hope not? ZW is still committed and passionate to get this new NFL stadium. Maybe? Prince should help out to pressure the City + State on this deal? Since he is from here. Dance Music Sex Romance baby! Everybody clap your hands now!
i want them to build a stadium with a retractable roof so they can get a super bowl but all vikings home games will be played with the roof open to give back the advantage we had at Met Stadium
Football Stadiums don't need a Convertible roof (hell they don't need a roof period) they play even in snow so wtf? Save some Tax dollars you jerks (or at least put your own money for that).
The Vikings have to get a new stadium. The Metrodome is shit. There are so many regulations on it, that the Vikings can't do anything hardly. Also, it's last in the NFL in generating revenues. The Vikings need the new venue to remain competitive in the NFL. The retractible roof is only so that the venue will be able to hold Super Bowls and Final Fours. You don't need it, but it's nice to have. They need the stadium and I hope they get it. It'll be home to great events for decades. Skol Vikings!
Super Bowl games should be in Arizona and Texas and Louisiana and California. Not Minnesota. Not being a downer, but just being real. As for Final Four games, it's no big deal. Sometimes, the first and second round games and regional games are more exciting than the final four. The NCAA can use the Target Center and Xcel Energy Center for NCAA games.
Vikes need a new stadium. They should build an outdoor open air stadium to get the homefield advantage they had when they played at Metropolitan Stadium. SKOL VIKINGS!
The Vikings need an open stadium with parking for tailgating. Building a retractable roof stadium in downtown minnecrapolis would just be metrodome 2. Fuck the commission and fuck roofed stadiums. Open air and in the suburbs is the only way!
Agreed. They need to be playing outdoors again! Football is an outdoor sport. The legislature needs to get its head out of its ass before the state ends up losing our beloved Vikings. SKOL VIKINGS!
It's amazing to me that all those other buildings were funded, yet people balk at financing the stadium for the team that means the most. Vikings have to stay and that's it.
whah whah whah blah blah blah SHUT UP, the stadium is really old we need a new one and if you dont wanna pay for it with taxes well tough luck to you, cuze everything in minn. comes down to txes. and this dumb @ss light rail hase costed use nerly 2.5billion if not more. we could have paid for the 35w bridge no problem but no gotta build lighrail and minn is now 300mill in det and we could have built da hastins bridge bu no gotta build light rail the thing is pointless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
