Pro team owners claim a major sports team brings in millions to the local area. What they don't tell you is they take billions away from the area to pay rich players and owners. Vikings say they don't need a roof and their fans will still come to games, didn't happen that way at the bank when they gave seats away to local collage kids that even left early due to cold.

As for the argument that citizens have to subsidize civic centers even though many don't utilize them, I would say that the cost of civic centers pales in comparison to the cost of the proposed stadiums and promote activities that are more intellectual and less blue-collar than sports. For a burgeoning metropolitan area economic growth is not in attracting blue-collar workers and industries but in attracting a cultural and educational elite that value the arts more than sports.

Why are people having the discussion about how much the team means to Minnesotans? It only means something to the Minnesotans who watch more than a couple games a year. Should you pay for a private facility? YES. That's a stupid question to even ask. The Metrodome is clearly outdated and is in poor condition. The Vikings have already said they will not play another season more after the lease runs out.

I have good friend in Mn who say's he'd like his tax money back for the Guthrie, The Convention Center. They were built with tax payer money but he doesn't go to either. Sorry but the Vikings blew it when they refused to partner with the University of Minnesota on the new Gopher TCF Stadium. As taxpayers we are already paying $10 million dollars a year for a football stadium that is used 12 days a year. Absolutely! What the Vikings should have done is what the Seattle Seahawks or Pittsburgh Steelers did to get their new stadium. The Vikings should play at TCF Stadium for two years. In that time frame, knock down the Metrodome and build an open air stadium. Then, after the two years, move into the stadium. The Steelers and the Pitt Panthers play in the same stadium, Heinz Field. The Seahawks played at Husky Stadium for two years because they knocked the Kingdome down.

Of course they refused that deal, any professional sports team would. Of course they want their own facilities, and if the city isn't willing to give them that, there are cities who would be glad to. A successful NFL team is an incredibly valuable commodity.

It is quite obvious that the Metrodome cannot meet the Vikings needs much further in the future......due to revenue and the subpar standards.

This has been an issue for years and years, and not a thing has been done.

The question is this: is keeping the Vikings worth 700 million to the taxpayers? I think it is. If not, then I guess we don't think too much of our Vikings and we run the risk of losing them.

cant they just keep the dome for the vikings? the dome is (or used to be) used for so much, it's a trademark for minnesota sports. the gophers have a stadium, the twins soon will, the t wolves have the target center, and the wild have the xcel. besides, sitting in a STADIUM in a minnesota winter would be miserable for the fans. thats why the roof is useful. the state cant afford to keep spending money on new arenas anyway :l

Not a Vikings fan, but kudos to the owner for his commitment to the Vikings fans. I agree, the Metrodome is very functional. Considering the economy, this is an awfultime to ask the public to pay for any "want". I'm glad the Twins have a fabulous new outdoor park. Also, I think the Vikings mean a lot more to Minnesotans than the Twins do. Plus, the Twins have only won two World Series and those were in '87 and '91. It's not like they've won anything besides division titles in the last 18 years. The Vikings have had some bad seasons, but we have some good players now and I think with the aid of a new stadium and increased revenue, we will be able to do better in the future.

Let's put it this way... what will we do with the Dome if the Vikings leave? It will be a waste of space and will no longer be generating revenue. The Vikings have to get a new stadium. The Metrodome is shit. There are so many regulations on it, that the Vikings can't do anything hardly. Also, it's last in the NFL in generating revenues. No we should not pay taxes for this. Zygi and all these bastards have been trying to get this done for YEARS. It's good to see the newer planning sketches. The original master plan for downtown has a bunch of condos and a small lake where the Metrodome is. That must have been scrapped since they couldn't build in Blaine.

It's obvious they could pay for it themselves with ticket revenue, but these jack asses are new world order scum who view tax payers as exploitable slaves for the slaughter.
