They put Natural Science together more or less on the fly, in the studio? That is absolutely amazing. One of their more complex tracks ever, and one of my absolute favorite.
Geddy lee. His real name is Gary. And i think his grandmother would call him for dinner when he was a kid and she had some strange accent and couldn't say it right. And all his childhood friends would ask him "why is she calling you Geddy?'"
These guys did not strain against each other to make the music but strained to give birth to it like pulling it through the walls of time and space all together and one for all and it took almost more than they had to give but it came and was done like scripture in the good book! stretching the bounds of the human mind!and recording it as no others can!
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to recognize their mistakes.[1] The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority
In any economy choices must be made. Choice is necessary because human wants exceed available resources. That fact is what economists refer to when we talk about "scarcity." Dealing with the implications of scarcity is the basic purpose of economic science.
If we decide to reject market choices, choices will nevertheless be necessary. Economic scarcity will still be very much with us.
@ashlar236 HA!!! No shit!!!! yhou crack me up....I can only think by their complections that there had to be something keeping them up all night? It wasn;t groupies!!!!
Alex I always push your dad's wheelchair for him as he live 4 floors above me with your wonderful mom, mille...they are always so nice to me and your mom loves to make you your fave meal on Xmas...roasted duck! all best J!
What is interesting in this interview is that Geddy pretty much runs the show. He tells Neil to speak, interjecting where needed. It's likely not planned, as this is their working relationship. Geddy speaks very easily, describing things with simplicity and humour. Alex? Where's Alex? Sleepy.
@yes90125 - you hit the nail on the head. He was never so shy before, which is the opposite of how life typically is. However, it's understandable with all the tragedy the man has been through.

takes me back. I can smell that studio air: a) one part herbal b) one part coffee c) one part cold pizza d)one part stale beer. Nothing minty and fresh in that room - except the musical ideas.
I love Neil's explanation on why he writes most of the lyrics. To be able to recognize those aspects of each of the band members & understanding the utilization of those attributes, they just knew what they were doing, didn't they?
@guitarification24 Nope, thank god his voice would be completely gone if he did, cause he is almost 60 and its obviously starting to leave him (happens to all singers at some point)
You can really tell the intelligence level of Ged/Neil especially at such a young age...no offense to Alex :)...and I love what Ged says after 4:17...."almost a 2 hour show"..MAN- little did they know that 30 years later, they would be pulling 3 hour shows, and touring on all continents! a real class act
wow, neil is so poised and deliberate here. pauses before answering to reflect for a second, thinking, pondering, he's clearly NOT nervous or anything. man, he just speaks really well, and his words carry weight. and........he's probably STILL that way i would imagine! lol! very nice.
Ok I wonder if the interviewer thought Geddy was serious when he said that he and Alex can't read... it sure sounds like it....but I love their sort of come back at 7:19 XD "We don't...talk so good..."
0:06 , poor neil... i once saw a news interview with peart in it where he was asked to name all these "dumb drummer" jokes... he prob learmed them ALL for geddy, lol!
"Some bands have gone back to basics but those are the bands cant do anything BUT play basics." Hooray for Rush name dropping Talking Heads, Boomtown, Yes, Bill Bruford, UK, Pink Floyd and The Police!
Nowadays Neil is very uncomfortable with fans. He doesn't do the meet and greets. Alex & Geddy do all of the publicity tours. Remember, Neil's been through hell the past 5 years. I read his books & they are quite revealing. He's seems comfortable with the written word.
Ok. One for the Lord Of The Rings movie fans - Alex is clearly rocking the permed 'Shire' mullet, but are we seeing the "Merry" or "Pippin" look in this vid? Either way, he's ahead of his time here. Again.
(See what I did there? Here? again? Here again? Ok. Sorry. Yes, I'm a lifelong Rush fan)
Geez. I think at that point they were at their best (P.W. and then M. P a little later). They were workaholics, and gave it all for their dream of perfection of kickass rock.
Unpretentious, relaxed, honest, mature - the stuff of greatness. As a life long Rush fan, this may be my favorite retro-video.
my friends dads band Teaze was the next band to have studio time booked at Le studio after rush and then rush came back to do overdubs while teaze was in the studio so my friends dad met geddy and learned a few little tricks from him!
Oh yeah, they're stoned. All the best bands (and Rush is certainly one of the best) smoked a lot of pot to enhance creativity. Hell, listen to their song "Passage To Bangkok." Bands today need to adopt that formula.
i had the honor and privledge to intern at Le Studio in Sept/Oct '90. i spent time in the vaults and even got a chence to put Witch Hunt up on the big board. i got to listen to each track...
