I don't understand those two's motivations at ALL...especially JILL! HELLO..he has control of the whole nation, with the freedom and power to do what he wanted in the first place - marry his girl, and unite the kingdoms, and so instead he destroys everything? this doesn't make any sense.
In war, nothing makes sense. There's going to be plenty of pain and suffering and yeah, simple people get dragged in and wonder 'why?' This film clearly shows what war can do to two couples; one who is at war with one another by their families and the other is shown what happens when greed and power takes over a simple promise...
It was on purpose. Just like she said, whichever country wins, it won't matter since the two of them 'can't go back.' And so the solution was death, Romeo & Juliet style.
I remember being shocked when I saw that scene as a kid. :(
Ahanas knew whichever side proved the victor, the heir of the losing side not only would face capture and humiliation, but eventually political execution. Not wanting either of them to face life without the other, she chose death for them both, though I don't see why they couldn't of just run away to wherever the Saki villagers relocated to, or still would've committed the deed had she known she was the last surviving Ithan. Did they really have no control now that they were the new rulers? T_T
Did I miss a big chunk of the movie or did Izu's character change drastically with no real lead in. I mean ya he wanted to be a hero and live his little fairy tale life but damn, he abandoned his wife and probably killed hundreds of people by flooding the city. Honestly I would have liked to see some character transition. (P.S. 8:48 he got himself a hookah. HA)
Izu reminds me of this weird mix of Sasuke and Naruto - he's a loudmouthed moron with he's got a ton of ambition (Naruto) and he's willing to do stupid, dangerous things in order to achieve that ambition (Sasuke).
I'm actually a little bit confused--I was told that in the original version, there is a brutal murder of a wife, like a beating. I didn't see that anywhere. Was I misinformed?

There's nothing like a little Windaria to make you want to hang yourself.
