Through overseas trade the island has given its name to the Classical Latin word for copper through the phrase aes Cyprium, "metal of Cyprus", later shortened to Cuprum.
It's great that you want to solve the problems and to kick out the English colonialists. But you're not being fair to history. When Greece tried to force union, it was led by a dictatorship that tried to overthrow the democratic Cypriot govt. just as it did the dem. Greek government. So OF COURSE the Cypriot govt. was against it. But while Greek Cypriots didn't like the tactics of the dictatorship, they didn't like Turkish invasion either, and they fought hard against it.
"EOKA B" that was active in 1971-4, and this was a very different organization than the original EOKA of 1955-9. EOKA was primarily an anti-British organization that most Greek Cypriots supported and considered them freedom fighters. "EOKA B" was a terrorist group with a similar name and was rejected by its former allies, including Makarios. EOKA were not the bad guys as Turkey today likes to portray them.
Most people on Cyprus would disagree with you. It's great that you love Greek people, but the island has a majority Greek population. The only reason it is not part of Greece today is that it was not in the interests of Britain and Turkey to let that happen. The complex politics of the world should not let us lose sight of that fact.

It's great that you want to solve the problems and to kick out the English colonialists. But you're not being fair to history. When Greece tried to force union, it was led by a dictatorship that tried to overthrow the democratic Cypriot govt. just as it did the dem. Greek government. So OF COURSE the Cypriot govt. was against it. But while Greek Cypriots didn't like the tactics of the dictatorship, they didn't like Turkish invasion either, and they fought hard against it.

"EOKA B" that was active in 1971-4, and this was a very different organization than the original EOKA of 1955-9. EOKA was primarily an anti-British organization that most Greek Cypriots supported and considered them freedom fighters. "EOKA B" was a terrorist group with a similar name and was rejected by its former allies, including Makarios. EOKA were not the bad guys as Turkey today likes to portray them.

Most people on Cyprus would disagree with you. It's great that you love Greek people, but the island has a majority Greek population. The only reason it is not part of Greece today is that it was not in the interests of Britain and Turkey to let that happen. The complex politics of the world should not let us lose sight of that fact.
