I tink they would be a good idea- if it was limited to goverment servants, police, and intelligence agencies. I'd feel a lot safer knowing everything THEY did was being monitored. Seriously.
Otherwise you are right- another (big) step towards totalitarian regime.

Is there anybody out there who thinks compulsory ID cards are a good idea? Didn't we fight Hitler and oppose the Soviet Union in order to prevent totalitarian bureaucracy? They must never be introduced.
