This is one of the best AWD cars ever. Combines comfort with utility. Tell me how embaresed will be the kids to drive them at school in a Niva or any other 4WD (most of them are ugly), and after that go to the mountain, make your crazy things, and after pick them up from school.
Lada will kill the SX4 offroad, no questions asked. Niva has low range, serious ground clearance, approach and departure and breakover clearance, etc. I've owned and driven 'real' 4WD's, but the SX4 is a great daily driver, and I remain impressed with what it can handle off the road if you're sensible. And far better on road handling than a real 4WD.
You'd be suprised... The 1st gear in the manual SX4 has almost the same ratio as low-range gear in a Manual Jeep Wrangler Sahara... Get its $200 2.25" lift kit and BFG all terrains, and now you have the same ground clearance as the wrangler too.
Man, this car has some great versatility. That AWD looks decent, and probably makes snow or some forest/camping trails fun to drive! I saw another video of a simialr sx4 over at sx4club (.) com
nicely done. do more videos like that with other awd cars. i shure would love to see how subaru impreza 2.5i sx4's direct competitor, would do in this same test
I'd love to, however I only bought the SX4, and I can't really afford to buy an Impreza too. :) I'm just a home owner of this car, not a review magazine or anything. I will be doing more vids showing off the SX4's abilities though. Much better than I thought it would be offroad. I used to have a Pajero, this can get most places that did.
"I'm just a home owner of this car" - haha it's funny! that's cool, good video neveretheless. profesionally done, none of that amateur shaky camera movements or nasty background sounds. lacks any sound though. put maybe put some nice relaxing music in the background or audio commentary. and the place is just beautiful. where is that? australia? enjoy your car!
Bit lke the 2WD/4WD selector in 4WDs of old. But yes, no low range however 1st in the manual is quite short so works well for this. As it's monocoque no separate chassis you do have to be careful, if I dumped it on a big rock or something, it wouldn't be pretty unlike a truck based 4wd that would handle such thing ok. ABS is a pain in sippery dirt situations as on dirt ABS increases stopping distance generally. i will probably wire up an ABS bypass for this reason.
i'm also pretty surprised to hear of good off road capabilites, because it's suppose to be an awd system and not a true 4wd low gear system found in trucks like pajero. so be carefull pushing it, don't break your toy;)
Yep, Australia. Camera was a digital still camera, fuji, in movie mode on a tripod. Edited in iMovie on a Mac. Because it's not full time AWD, (in auto mode the rears kick in when needed only) in lock mode it's a real 50/50 split as there is no centre diff like in Subarus, so you can't use this lock mode on bitumen, which is why it works well offroad.

Nice Vid!
So sorry about the little kitty.
I used to have a Balinese wild cat, Nardo, and he also became friends with our doggie, Bakita... Miss them so much.

whats the difference between AWD and FWD Lock?
philupthecup345 3 years ago
awd activates when needed. 4wheel drive is all the time

@philupthecup345 In AWD the rear wheels only engage when it senses slip at the front. In 4WD lock the transfer case is locked.
