That's Jamerson's 'The Hook' technqiue, when he plays with one finger.

Jamerson's technique. Anything yo can do to emulate the sound you are going for helps. These songs would not sound the same if he played them with 2 fingers. cheers

Thanks - it's a Japanese fender with LaBella flats, high action, and two pieces of eraser wedged under the bridge bell plate to mute the strings!
