@whowantsabighug Well, i've been working with them for about 10 years ago. At one point my girlfriend at the time Madame Archel was in the band, and now my younger brother Nathaniel Johnstone is in the band.
@ChildsPrison At least it's still not widely known in mainstream culture, which is still fine with me... The moment that Kesha or some other mainstream artists gets into it, however, I'm pretty much out...
@ChildsPrison How's that heartbreaking? I'm not trying to sound persecutive, i'm just wondering why you think that something you used to be a part of has expanded? It's not like the Steampunk subculture will become mainstream, it's too anti-establishment!
It's also a subculture ... now I'm refraining from the urge to use profanity at a person too enamoured of themeselves to have been able to give someone else the right to enjoy a genre in WHICHEVER way they want ... personally I like the music and also steampunk so please in future remember:
NO ONE CARES whether you like them or steampunk ... remove the high horse from your arse and either enjoy it or DON'T WATCH IT
hey, NYCPoopHero... just go where you belong, why do you hurt yourself listening to this? Need some attention maybe? go and bother your careless parents and let other enjoy this beauiful art !
Literary genre only? Tell that to the 1,394 people who attended SteamCon last weekend for literature AND art AND music AND costuming AND gadgets AND history AND engineering AND MORE.
Good stuff. I do prefer them in their current steampunk incarnation however. There's about five bazillion goth bands out there, but damned few steampunk ones. Besides, they seem to be having more fun and not taking themselves so seriously as a steampunk band.
Not exactly. Live in concert is when they're recorded at a concert. Live in studio is when they perform the full song, instead of in pieces that are potentially tweaked, in the studio.
Batness is right steampunk wasn't musically defined til they started dressing like final fantasy characters. Frankly I thought it woulda sounded faster and louder this is just goth with a pulse...
@maxmin Wow... This exact same argument has presented itself on every single video of pre-steampunk AP I have seen posted by you or anyone else. Don't people do any research before making an ass out of themselves?
It's more their image and visuals that have gotten them considered "steampunk." However they have a far more gothic appearance in this video, but it's a year old.
Rasputina does come off as "steampunk," but they prefer the term "cello rock." It's just the nature of sub-genres lol.
you should also check out Magdalene Veen's myspace (just google her name) there's a whole story about how they're the crew of an airship, set in the industrial age, plus there's great pics of her there, and she's damn hot :D
They started out goth... a lot of the studio performances like this one are from their goth days, so you're not wrong to wonder why they're considered steampunk now. Have a look at their website or myspace pages and you'll see they've changed their image over the years (and acquired an airship in to the bargain!) to take on a more steampunk feel.
The band members themselves like the genre of Steampunk and have incorperated many visual elements into their stage shows. ALSO their lyrics frequently refer to "Victorian"-era subjects...
Since Steampunk started as a literary genre and not a musical one, it's hard to define what is "Steampunk" music. It's a judgement call, and since the band calls themselves Steampunk sometimes people flew with it. And Rasputina is frequently "lumped in" to Steampunk music too.
Yeah, they're great! But are they gothic? Cause I read somewhere that they were steampunk hehe... Anyway, listen to the new album, they're even better
hello im spanish, could anybody write me what says the chorus? i looked for it everywhere and i didnt find it. Just write what the chorus says. Thank you very much.
Steampunk is not a specefic genré but a collection of genres. Very much like "Rock" Is anything from Elvis to Sex Pistols to Metallica. (Elives IS rock. Elives plays very old Rock'n'roll. 60-70s I do belive?)
Steampunk is not a music style, but rather a genre, related with literature, something like a branch of the definition of cyber punk as literary genre.

It's hard to pin a style of music as "Steampunk" since it's so broad a genre. If you download tracks from Abney, in the "genre" section they frequently call themselves "goth."
This is neither here nor there, as I think Abney Park has a very fresh style that doesn't really fit into a category like "goth" or "steampunk."
However, this vid doesn't do them justice. See them live if you want a show.
Oh, yes Bauhaus title. So...? As if they have all rights to the words "martyr" and such.
Actually, if you asked Steampunks themselves, many would say that Abney Park practically is the definition of steampunk as a musical style all by themselves.
What defines someone as "Steampunk?" Because I would say that I'm pretty "Steam" and Abney Park is not the definition of Steampunk as a musical style. Abney Park is rockish.
Vernian Process is probably more Steam in nature. Even Unextraordinary Gentlemen are more steampunk.
