They started out goth... a lot of the studio performances like this one are from their goth days, so you're not wrong to wonder why they're considered steampunk now. Have a look at their website or myspace pages and you'll see they've changed their image over the years (and acquired an airship in to the bargain!) to take on a more steampunk feel.

Since Steampunk started as a literary genre and not a musical one, it's hard to define what is "Steampunk" music. It's a judgement call, and since the band calls themselves Steampunk sometimes people flew with it. And Rasputina is frequently "lumped in" to Steampunk music too.

It's hard to pin a style of music as "Steampunk" since it's so broad a genre. If you download tracks from Abney, in the "genre" section they frequently call themselves "goth."

This is neither here nor there, as I think Abney Park has a very fresh style that doesn't really fit into a category like "goth" or "steampunk."

However, this vid doesn't do them justice. See them live if you want a show.
