I feel that as long as Israel has nuclear capabilities (most nuclear warheads per capita in the world), Iran should have the right to seek nuclear weapons as well. Modernization does not equal "Westernization". However, I actually think now Iran should be allowed to have nuclears (just don't use them), the nuclears would protect them from being invaded and prevent another war. Not really logical. IF USA knew 100% that Iran will soon have WMD's they would surly attack to prevent Iran from having them. If Iran already had nuclear weapon, then no one would attack it - because of fear Iran would use it. So having them or not developing them is safer; really developing them is not safe - because it's the pretext for attack. That is the main reason I do not believe Iran is developing them. This issue is purely political. Keeping level of fear is preferable for someone.

@Metsada007 I disagree for 3 reasons. Firstly, from a cultural point of view, Iranians don't associate themselves with "Western" culture, which don't even come close to Persian culture. Modernization does not equal "Westernization". Secondly, our history shows that always when the people in power have acted as puppets, they have been crushed by the people (such as the Constitutional Revolution). Even the Shah understood this, but only until end of 60's. Thirdly, our main concern is basic rights.

The facility in Qom is probably too small to be of ligitimate(non-weapons) use. This kind of common sense appeal does not carry weight under international law.
Under the version of the NPT signed by the iranian government they were not obliged to disclose the existance of the facility until closer to its operational date. There is no dispute that Iran has done nothing technically illegal here.

I didn't really have a view on this debate before I watched it now, I hate nuclear weapons, disgraceful.
However, I actually think now Iran should be allowed to have nuclears (just don't use them), the nuclears would protect them from being invaded and prevent another war. America should get rid of theirs if they don't want Iran to have them, set an example, America are the bigger threat as they used them, twice, causing mass destruction.

Not really logical. IF USA knew 100% that Iran will soon have WMD's they would surly attack to prevent Iran from having them. If Iran already had nuclear weapon, then no one would attack it - because of fear Iran would use it. So having them or not developing them is safer; really developing them is not safe - because it's the pretext for attack. That is the main reason I do not believe Iran is developing them. This issue is purely political. Keeping level of fear is preferable for someone.

If the us attacks it will be for Iranian resources. The whole idea of making the "world safer" is a myth. So I agree if Iran actually has has nuclear weapons the us is less likely to attack.
What you said sounds like the dilemma Saddam Hussein had. He didn't have nuclear weapons but didn't want it to be confirmed that so he gave the inspectors the runaround a couple of times. The us used this to raise their own (and the worlds) fears to justify their invasion. Damned you do, Damned if you don't.

It must be also said that should Iran have a nuclear weapon or two, that would act as an effective deterrent against any attacks by Israel. The Iranians are not stupid, they know full well that should they attack Israel with a nuclear weapon, Israel would immediately retaliate with dozens of nuclear weapons, effectively wiping Iran off the map. Also look at the Iranian coup d'etat in 1953, it was all about the West stealing Iranian oil. How? PM Mosaddeq believed the Iranians should develop their oil reserves and Iran should profit from them, NOT British foreign companies. So we overthrew the government installed our puppet dictator as we usually do and go about our way.
All the American oil companies that made record profits last summer sure as hell did not make those profits from American oil.

I realize how the West and Israel was able to take control of the entire mid east, and it is even apparent in this debate. They have fueled the Sunni and Shia tensions and supplied both sides with weapons to kill each other. Until Sunnis and Shiites unite to combat Western Imperialism there is no hope for muslims in the mid east. This I am becoming more and more certain of.

Want to know one way it works? Forcing countries to trade oil in dollars. Look up Iraq trades oil in euro through google. You should find a CNN archive, they started doing this a few years before the invasion. After the invasion, the FIRST thing we did was had Iraqi oil start to trade in the dollar again, causing the Iraqis to take a 16% cut to their profits. In modern times that is how you steal oil.
