Why do you assume its not staged? Because hes not right? A slightly wrong prediction will just make people percieve his other cheap tricks as credible.

Its physics at the end of the day, not much different from predicting the location of the planets 100 years from now just on a much smaller & faster scale. The mass and curvature are fixed values, NEVER CHANGE. The only two variable are ball speed and Wheel speed. You can't deny our brain approximates well...
@pdderek You forgot air currents and microscopic imprefections on the wood, metal and ball. When the ball is first spun, these variables could determine the ball landing on the complete oposite side of the wheel. Think about it, a slight air current could slow the ball 0.01mph hense a varied first contact with the metal. This would undoubtably change the landing of the ball.

1: It's very much illegal to document yourself cheating and to take cameras into casinos.
2: The casino is very quiet and empty. This is obviously a closed or fake casino.
3: Everything that Derren does is a trick, predicting the lottery is one example from this series.
4: Derren's tricks do not go wrong. This one, went perfectly.
5: It makes sense that he wanted to fail, the trick was that he was 1 away, which is still impressive and also makes the series more believable.

@mazotu His method wasn't cheating though. Just as Card counting at Blackjack is NOT cheating but casinos just don't want you doing it and will remove anyone they think is doing it. As is it NOT illegal to film yourself in a casino. they will ask you to leave, but they have no legal grounds against anyone who got away with doing it in secret. It's also impossible to see how busy the casino is based on those shots, all you can see is one roulette table, bear in mind this wasn't in Vegas.

He tells you one minute that he IS going to misdirect you, the VERY next line tells you that 'no actors or stooges are used' Could it be that this is his first mis-direction?? If you think he messed up then he got you nicely.
The whole point was to get as close as possible!
3 reasons:
1. By not getting it and missing by just one... it suggest his method IS the explanation to the trick but he was just unlucky...
