Great documentary! Sad I never got the chance to eat there . . . sounds like my kind of place!
I grew up in that area . . . I remember Holiday Bowl and Crenshaw Square with great fondness. Remember the Crenshaw Carnivals? Thank you for bringing back great memories and also, some great tunes :)
Memories of getting my hair cut at Ben K's or waiting for my mom to get her hair done and getting a big plate of bacon fried rice or char siu fried rice. Amazing. Mary is the sweetest nicest lady around.
Hey Tad - Great video. My Auntie Keiko was a long time customer who retired and became a waitress at Tak's a few mornings a week for years. Mary, Keiko & several people in the video still meet every Sat & Sun morning for breakfast.
I lived and grew up around the Crenshaw area my entire life through high school. Although I live in the Bay Area, some of my best friends are from the old neighborhood. The spirit of many different peoples getting along as a community was as true then as it is in the video. The video makes me appreciate my friends from back in the day, my love for the music and of course the food.
I enjoyed this film and I too remember how important Holiday Bowl was to the J.A. and the rest of the community. I look forward to seeing more of your projects.
Mary is my grandma! thank you so much for doing this video. i don't know anyone that is as loving and hard working as she is. i am so proud to be her granddaughter.
I grew up in the Crenshaw area but after college I moved to New York and have live there for over 35 years. Although I've never eaten at Tak's I did hang out at the Holiday Bowl many a summer's night. Thanks for brings back a lot of fond memories. Perhaps this might convince me to return to the old neighborhood.
Good lick - good to know about Taks. I lost touch since I moved to Torrance. Gonna have to go down to get some good stuff, Holiday Bowl kine! Thanks! Kiki
wow! this was a while back ago! now my father aka chino the chef, is former owner of the restaurant the name stayed the same and pretty much everything is the same. and i just cant believe there was a video in here about Tak's well everyone is welcomed to come and enjoy the food and service
I love Tak's, good food and excellent service. But Mary has retired now, I've known her since I was a boy of 13 at Holiday Bowl. Shirley, another former waitress, also worked at Holiday. The legacy that they began continues.
This video is very cool! I used to hit the Kokusai theater and Holiday Bowl back in my college days! I grew up over in Hollywood, so I couldn't hang out in Crenshaw until I could drive myself. I've never been to Tak's, but I think I remember Mary over at Holiday Bowl. I'll have to go over there when I'm in the neighborhood!
hey tadillac, thk you sooo much for making this vid! I grew up around Crenshaw and like every one else that lived around there, hung out around Holiday bowl. Some of my best memories growing up revolved around this unique neighborhood and I still go back there from time to time. In fact I was at Taks a couple of weeks ago with a friend - ordered the moco loco and grits!
Beautiful, the way it was

Great work, it's nice to see these guys get some recognition for what they do. Still my favorite place to grab breakfast in the city.

Tadashi-
Your film is not only a tribute to Tak's, but a tribute to the community which blended Black American and Japanese American
cultures.
This brings great memories of growing up including the bowling alley, Dorsey High, Crenshaw Y, and the Nisei Festival.
Thanks for sharing such a positive reflection of the Crenshaw District.
