The way I see it, otaku, in the western anime community at least, has essentially the same effect as calling someone a nerd, it is a derogatory term. HOWEVER as the Vlogbrothers have proved, a term that was originally meant to cause offense doesn't have to stay that way. Langauge is flexible and now otaku is just used as a banner that all anime fans identify under.

I actually play Magic the Gathering, and I had a custom playmat made from one of the amazing wallpapers that were on Konachan. It is Lat Miku in a pretty school uniform standing amidst Sakura trees. It always gets my psyched to play during tournaments and definitely has a rather "shocking" effect on some of my manlier competitors.
