  • Oh..and one other thing...you're absolutely brilliant to have learned this by ear!! Congratulations!!!

  • @sfbcreative

Hey Scott, I thought you had already seen this clip. It took me more time than usual to learn it and to play it decently. It's so damn difficult! Specially with those "moving chord shapes" while arpeggiating. Would like to make a better recording of this one some day... Btw I didn't know you used the same tuning in your album, it's such an unusual one. Best wishes to you bud.

  • @hyperboreal

Yeah I saw it on Ant's site and tried it out out. I actually composed 3 songs using it. Only now do I realize I had the top pair (A/E) of strings tuned 'upside down'!!!

Have you 'tabbed' any portion of 'June' at all? Especially those 'moving chord shapes' I still want to learn this song too...and now it seems like I might be able to make some progress on it by watching your video!!!

  • @sfbcreative

He does that so he can play around with that single A string while fingerpicking without playing the interval. Although you can also hear him do that with the flat pick (as in "September" and others). Tricky stuff.

I haven't tabbed any of the Ant pieces but if you get stuck at some specific part let me know. I also would like to know how that middle part is played!

  • @hyperboreal

Although I've been told there were no overdubs on any of the songs on 'Twelve' I recently heard mention that many of Ant's pieces were double and triple tracked...which may explain some of the baffling overtones!!!

  • When did you learn this?!?!?!? This is the song we talked about back in 08!!! I guess I missed it when you posted it!!!! I use this tuning on 3 different songs on my album 'Sparkle'!!!

  • I can hear something way out of tune. Possibly the lower D and more. Your skill on the song was great but the tuning just made it off. Other than that....fantastic job! I think I found that new inspiration I was looking for.

  • @OnlyInBoston

yeah, you're right, by the time I recorded this piece that guitar couldn't stay in tune well and I had been doing a few takes before resulting some "out-of-tuning-ness". I should be more aware of that when I record anyway! thanks for commenting.

  • Fantastic! A musical gem...

    Saludos desde Brazil!

  • Incredible. I have to start looking into Anthony Phillips; I had no idea he was such a composer. Especially the part around 3.5 minutes in - so complex! Very well played, sir.

  • I call myself a huge fan of the early Genesis era but am ashamed to admit I really never gave Ants solo stuff much of a listen. Thank God Ive discovered him through your covers Hyper, my God his stuff is so beautiful and your playing is nothing short of amazing. Bravo my friend.

  • @badrogue66

That's really great, I also discovered many of his music after so many years of Genesis following. But it's never too late. If you like the 12-string duets with Rutherford on the Geese album you have to check out his Gypsy Suite. It will blow your mind. Thanks so much for your words.

  • Fantastic tune Dude - reminds me of Steve Hackett. Love the cascading, open arpeggios.

  • very good job

  • @Neelan22

Bueno y eso que está tocada más lentamente (casi un minuto de diferencia!).

Muchas gracias por tus palabras de nuevo.

  • Isnt that cool that he uses double strings tuned to intervals of a third or fifth...this is such a gorgeous piece; Alex you are great!

  • Pues si a tí te parece difícil, imagínate al resto de los mortales. Preciosa canción, excelente ejecución y otro vaso de babas que me tengo que recoger...

    ;-)

    ¡Feliz verano!

  • @Bflat

Jejeje, gracias Berni. Que tengas unas buenas vacaciones.

  • Amazingly complex piece, Alex.....and equally brave to take on the challenge. Superbly done though ! I'd have enough trouble getting my head round the tunings in the first place :o) Cheers, Jim

  • was a good month. :)

  • thank you for sharing the good sounds with us.....I wish we could share a good glass of red wine and see you live...beautiful beautiful guitar tunes executed with so much life and passion. thanks

  • @hbous

That's very nice of you, thanks a lot.

  • wow I like it very much!!

  • Wow.. those are some amazing chord voicings. Sweet, sweet, sweet!

    Great job!

  • @roxxytans

    Thanks Ian!

  • Beautiful, Alex! Nice work once again!

  • Twelve is a masterpiece, one of my most favourite guitar albums ever...and this is a spectacular version, I guess it must be a so difficult piece, bravo :)

  • Alex, are you wearing a thumb pick, or do you just have an impressively strong finger-nail?

Isnt Ant so amazing; what a songwriter; I bet he's seen you by now and is flattered by your dedication to his work.

    Keep shining my friend,

    Amy

  • @amccann7

I'm using a flat pick and fingers for the middle part. Thank you Amy.

  • super,super,super!!!!!!

  • @wojciechdan

    Thanksx3 Wojciech!

  • @alwaysbeenethel

Did I won it? I had no idea :P Thanks A.

  • Your fingerpicking is really clean. Great job. The proggers live on.

  • @hrmerr

    Thanks.

  • Another "Twelve's"!... Sounds great to me. I love so much this album, the same for your works and performances about it. Applause!

  • Wow.... amazing job Alex! Impressive as usual! Love the 12 string.

  • @ProgMom67

Thank you Julie, yes, 12-strings are great!

  • Another revelation for us, fans! It is great to see all those tricky solutions. There are lots of secrets of Ant's style in this video, now visible. Thank you for that!

  • @bencuri

Very glad you appreciate the intricacies of this piece buddy.

  • Very proggy, very Genesis. Love it!

  • @geffel

And, duh, just read the crotch bar and saw that it's an Ant Philips composition...

  • Stunning Alex, just wow!

  • @thrip

    Thanks a bunch Tim.

  • excellent playing Alex and the 12 string sounds amazing the action on 12 strings can be a struggle but it can be fixed by either tuning down a step and using a capo or filing a couple of mm off the bridge buy a replacement bridge nut and experiment on it if things go wrong you still have the original

  • @centralscrutinizer9

Thank you Russell. Yeah, I've tried some of those things and setting the truss rod but when I did that what I got was some serious fret buzz. The capo easies things a lot but I couldn't use it on this piece ( I needed that 20th fret!). I'll have take it to a luthier some day or simply get another one...

  • @musique2a

I'm happy that you liked it. Greetings.

  • Sounds better now. :=)

  • @miaris

    Thanks Mia!
