  • I wonder that what kind software make this master piece anime?

  • This movie was awsome!! I love the movie!! :D

  • There IS an English dub of Summer Wars. I know this vid was made in April, 2010 so there wouldn't be one at that time since it came out in English in 2011. Thumbs this up so iOniV2 can see it and add an annotation or somthing to the video to let people know there IS an English version.

  • @TheTurtleWithATopHat Well, yeah, I DO own it on Blu-Ray. :|

  • ok ii am looking this movie up like craxy were can i get it for a chep price in english

  • 2056? I thought it took place in 2010? I distinctly remember Natsuki mentioning that she was born in 1992... >_>

  • this mother sounds like a faggot, quit trying to hard to be funny, faggot

  • @xCleverlyx ;D

  • @iOniV2 Great review man. :) Keep up the good work. Do you take requests? Oh and why do you have so many trolls? I mean this is kinda ridiculous.

  • @web2122 Why do I have so many trolls? Because I'm a 'weaboo faggot', apparently, despite being completely against weaboos.

And, no, I don't currently take requests (or make videos). I started University this year, so I haven't had time to make videos. However, once Uni finishes for the year, I am probably going to start making some new videos.

  • @iOniV2 Good to hear. I will be looking forward to them. Best of luck with the University. :)

  • summer wars was basically like digimon the movie........ it's actually really similar

  • @wsworld568 Made by the same person too apparently lol

  • THIS DOES NOT TAKE PLACE IN 2056 PPL! GOD!

  • @16technokid You're about the 2056th person to point this out. Would you like a cookie, Sherlock Holmes?

  • @iOniV2 Oh im sorry were you trying to make a joke? Well that's okay. Just keep on trying. Maybe you won't use a line that a 1st grader would use. :P

  • @16technokid A comment about supposed intelligence? How predictable.

  • Comment removed

  • @iOniV2 Awwww, tying to sound smart? Don't try to hard, you might hurt yourself. :)

  • @16technokid Misspelling your words whilst trying to point out my supposed lack of intelligence? How ironic.

  • @iOniV2 You poor challenged man. :/

  • @iOniV2 Look i like you. I like your videos. Just please stop bein a douche when someone says something about some one making a mistake. Thank you

  • @16technokid You should probably try reading a few more comments before acting like no one hasn't pointed out so obvious as a mistake. It's already been surmised why I made said mistake, and what year the movie takes place in (not that it's all that important to the story anyway).

  • @iOniV2 well, im sorry :)

  • this anime was fuckn weird -.- at least the romance kept me watching it

  • i love this moive

  • SPOILER ALERT

  • @andresrojas22 I don't consider what you can find in any synopsis to be a spoiler.

  • the movie's in english now!

  • @Billy193 Yeah I just Ordered it from Amazon! Anything about a digital world and dwelling entities is a buy from me. I LOVE Digimon, it's a shame though Digimon: the movie had to splice the films all together but overall I still like Digimon: the movie even so.

  • @realar I have the Limited Edition release from Australia of Summer Wars on Blu-Ray.

  • like this if you watched it this summer.

  • just saw the movie and i wanna be like Granny when i grow-up! holy shit, she's one kick-ass grandma!!!!!!

  • The Movie was kinda shit in my opinion and such a Digimon rip-off

  • @ShippudenEnglishDub2 But better.

  • @ShippudenEnglishDub2 how the hell is that Digimon rip-off?

  • Best character ever....GRANDMA SAMURAI,we salute you!

  • Anyone else see the resemblance to the first digimon movie?

Evil computer virus taking over the internet? check

Animals used to fight the evil? check

bad guy shooting something at the real life heroes? check

Everyone in the world coming together online to give the heroes a fighting chance? check

    Countdown clock of doom? check

All that's missing is the 90's soundtrack.

  • @peba132zope yea its the same director from digimon the movie, Mamoru Hosoda. He wanted to expand upon the idea from the digimon movie in this film. thats why they are so similar.

  • @esmeronrpg2193 I really enjoyed both movies and have no complaints. The similarities were a good thing.

  • U wanna do a supplement on the english VA cast?

  • LOOKS SO LIKE DIGIMON OUR WAR GAME!

    COOL!

  • Sry I mean Kazma oops...

  • I LOOOOVED it!!! Btw you can find an English dub really easily online just look up Summer Wars English dub free-that got me several reliable websites to watch the film an the English voice-actors are not to scoff at! Really BRILLIANT film-Kazuma rocks! :p

  • Did anyone know that there's a manga for summer wars ? check on Google if you don't believe me

  • basically its our war game, but longer, which came out 10 fucking years ago so i really dont see how this film is special in any way

    Oz is the digital world

King Kazma, is agumon, gabumon, and tentomon in one

    Love Machine, is Diaboromon

Kenji and Sakuma, are Tai and Izzy

    Natski is Sora

    ect ect ect

its very offensive to me that no one says our war game is any good when its exactly the same thing, plus it came out so long ago, yet this film is genious?

  • @SullyIsPrime No one has said this movie is 'special'. A movie doesn't have to be special to be awesome.

  • @iOniV2 sorry iOniV2 but summer wars won several awards such as the 2010 Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, the 2010 Japan Media Arts Festival's Animation Division Grand Prize, the Anaheim International Film Festival's Audience Award for Best Animated Feature as well as being nominated for the 2009 Golden Leopard award at the Locarno International Film Festival.

the comparabilities between summer wars and digimon the movie can be seen in both the real and virtual world.

  • @SullyIsPrime yeah! besides! its waaaaay different!

  • @SullyIsPrime as upset as you may be about this, would it make you feel any better that Our War Game had the same director as this movie?

  • @SullyIsPrime Isn't Mamoru Hosoda the director of that movie? So does it really matter?

  • @SullyIsPrime Because its not digimon, its a standalone thing. And people relate Digimon to kiddy shit. :[

  • @SullyIsPrime

This movies "genius" comes from the characters, heart and writing which aren't nearly as good in our War game.

  • @SullyIsPrime It was made by the same director as a spirital successor to Digimon. Of course it's similar. Except Summer Wars has a better plot, great cast of characters, great soundtrack, amazing animation and an ending that isn't complete deus ex machina bullshit.

  • @SullyIsPrime It does have same type of story, but I can say for sure that this movie is deeper than Our War Game. You should watch if you haven't, Its nothing like the Digimon movie. The avatar does not have any self awareness. its just an Avatar you can control like in an MMO. This movie focus much more on family value, even though family member argue and have there difference, when working together they can accomplish anything. Also Our Wargame seem to inspired by 1983 film WarGame

  • ....interesting accent :P

  • BEST MOVIE!!! I saw it in theaters three times in december '10! omg omg omg i love this!!

  • when or where can i buy this on dvd

  • @Worgenninja HMV

  • Oh it's the same people lol :D

  • At 0:01 the guy looks like Mokoto in the girl who leaped through time :P Similar artist :x

  • Great review, listening to you was very entertaining in itself and very informative. I've decided on watching it (I'll probably wait for the dub to come out so I can finally buy an anime DVD for once). Some people have trouble making a good review, entertaining, you sir, do not. ^_^ SUBBED!

  • The designs of Oz kinda remind me of Takashi Murakami's work.

  • If you say the story is good then I really wanna see it. To me the story is the most important thing. =)

  • if you want to watch the whole thing on youtube,

    add this after the .com

    /watch?v=Zy2Eu85XPWk&feature=&p=DC3A5131190432DD&index=0&playnext=1

    its english subbed

    hq video(720p) & audio

thumbs up so other can watch! :)

  • Finally Seen it, love every second of it! If you pay attention you notice a lot of references to Hosoda's Digimon Films. There is also one other aspect that carries over from his previous films: believable characters.

This is the second time the team behind "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" comes together to make a movie: Mamoru Hosoda (Director, Story), Satoko Okudera(Screenplay), Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Character Designs), Hiroyuki Aoyama(animation) and Tatsuzo Nishida(action scenes).

  • Wow! Great review! I can't wait to obtain this anime from Madman in March (which is after my birthday...). I may learn your reviewing techniques on your anime and apply them to my podcasts...

    Great job!

P.S. I'm Luffy III answering on the CAAGSpodcast.

  • I SAW THIS TODAY IN THEATERS AND IT WAS EPIC!!!!!!!

  • @AnimeYoukai911 lucky skunk.

  • Where can I watch this!! Looks really cool.

  • is there an english dub now? Cause i saw a trailer for it in english

  • @KaiAyame yeah but funimations only doing theater releases in select cities, but you can go online and get your theater to show it. the DVD release is february 14-15, 2011.

  • Great review but how do you reckon it takes place in the near future of 2056 ???

It doesn't look like 2056 and this is never mentioned in the movie. On top of that Natsuki replies she was born in 1992 when asked by Kenji. If my math's right that would make her 64 years old.

    But perhaps I missed something.

Anyhow, I LOVE THIS MOVIE !!!

  • @drawingafterSIX Honestly, it was a slip of the tongue due to a track in the OST. being called '2056'. I've already mentioned this in other comments.

  • @iOniV2 If my new guess is correct, 2056 does not refer to a year but actually the 2056 number code that serves as the Oz security system.

  • @DragonGyrl96 Most likely. Either way, it's only a minor slip up. It's not like it effects the entire review (which is why I'm honestly surprised so many people are making a fuss over it).

  • @iOniV2 In the movie, I swear it actually says around 2010.

  • @DragonGyrl96 wait the security encryption is 2056 bit?

    *inhale* *exhale**inhale* *exhale**inhale* *exhale**inhale* *exhale*

  • @drawingafterSIX you are correct :)

  • @drawingafterSIX it takes place in 2010!!!!!!!

  • @drawingafterSIX it doesn't say when the movie is I think, but the grandma was born on 1920, and his 90 years old and if you do the math its in the year 2000. I might have this wrong though.

  • I watched this just yesterday and i thought it was great! the story line, the characters and the suspense really made the movie worthwhile.

  • @quesxion Try harder, troll.

  • @quesxion you suck, dude.

  • @quesxion And you do not have a basic understanding of suspension of disbelief. Or a basic understanding of grammar, for that matter.

  • Wow. The art! So wonderful with it's own meaning! : 0

  • did that code just say : the magic words are squeamish ostrages, and who else thought kazuma was a girl when you first saw him.

  • Thank you! I would love to watch this. :D

  • how can i get a copy of the dvd.

  • really great animation. This is something that can be beautifully done by the computer but not by hand. just stunning

  • I wondered why this movie reminded me sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much of Digimon!

  • im american but why did you put a subtitle for your self at about 3:36 i understand you fine and if these deep south fudge packers can't understand you we'll fuck them.

  • Madhouse is the best animation studio on the planet, bar none

  • KING KAZMA IS UNDEFEATABLE!!! before chuck norris goes to sleep he checks under HIS bed for King Kazma.

  • I love the clip you added at the beginning of your review that was one of my fav parts in the film when King Kazma fights Love Machine :)

  • lol feels like one of digimon's movie

  • thnx for sharing! I'll watch soon with my x I mean bf? lol cnt wait! love anime n it seems interesting!! :)

  • Summer Wars has become one of my all time favorite anime movies! This is the anime movie for this generation. It's funny you mentioned the Jetsons because I swear I heard the sound effect of the jetsons flying car at the start of the movie.

  • @DragonGyrl96 I would just drop out of college and make a living developing shit for Oz ^_^

  • Comment removed

  • @ricanso1125 I wouldn't just drop out of college. maybe just switch to courses on computer graphics and programs and stuff.

  • i liked the movie alot but i dont think americans would understand the game.

  • Personally I thought this movie was rubbish, my apologies. I enjoyed the previous Ghibli movie very much though.

  • if they released this in america, it would be HUGE. I wish they would. thats probably not likely to happen though, is it? well tomorrows wishful thinking. even if it is never released over here, I would still love to see it.

  • @DragonGyrl96 No, Summer Wars is getting an U.S. release.

  • @iOniV2 funimation just dubbed it

  • @DragonGyrl96 So true!!!

  • @DragonGyrl96 what is the big deal of Summer Wars? plz

  • @WhiteEmerald1991 excuse me but, have you ever even heard of Mamoru Hosoda? the Hayao Miyazaki of animated sci-fi films? he worked on the movi Digimon and on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I'm sure that if you saw even a little of this movie or even read up on it using wikipedia or IMDb you would know why this movie is so awesome.

  • @DragonGyrl96 yea funimation released a clip of the English dub summer wars it was awesome the voices arnt shit like allot of dub i love summer wars i wish their was a show series for it they have such a opportunity to make a series though.

  • @JSpark135 well yeah but my original problem was do I find a way to watch the whole thing in the japanese dub with english subs or watch the english dub. you would have to hear the whole story and its a long one.

  • hey...sorry for correction, but try to watch it a numerous times....actually, the time of story takes place in the current year...remember that the birthday of grandmother is sunday, August 1...same as this years calendar....actually...as you can see on their PCs, they are using Windows 7...if you say that year is 2056...windows 7 will be obsolete...lol

but great movie indeed....watched it like a hundred times... :)

  • @ruztygitz Incorrect. The story takes place in the near future, not the future. There are no different calendars.

The use of Windows 7, which shows incorrect functions (some native to Linux OS'), is insignificant.

  • @iOniV2 Fyi, theres a date in the movie which is set a year after the release date. If you check the TV or cellphones in the movie it said somewhere around July to August 2010.

  • @woepriest I checked, and I saw no such date. And yes, I do have the 1080p release, so pixelation isn't obscuring my vision.

I saw it on a phone once, but I took it with a grain of salt. I assumed 2010 was when Oz was created, not when the movie took place, as the year the movie takes place isn't exactly specified.

The use of Windows 7 is still meaningless, considering the use of OS X applications and Linux-esque navigation.

    And I forgot where I got 2056.

  • @iOniV2 I think I know where you got 2056 from. if you look on Wikipedia they have a list of the music used in the movie, one of the songs is called 2056.

  • @DragonGyrl96 That's probably it! (I have the OST).

  • @iOniV2 no problem Mr. Freeman.

  • @iOniV2 where did you find it? i had the entire OST saved in my playlist called summer wars stuff but some copyright thing happened and then poof it was gone!

  • @iOniV2 Sorry to argue with you, but the story is in 2010. If you watch the part where Kenji looks at his phone, it says 2010. Also, if you look at the scene where Love Machine is looking at data, there is mainly 2010 being said over and over again. You probably got the number 2056 from when his friend is referring to the 2056 digit code sent to people's cell phones. Either than all that, great review. And again, sorry.

  • @Violenteers Yeah, we've been over this.

  • hehe Hollywood and co.'s shovelin a lotta crap these days too mate

Quite frankly I wasn't sure about getting into this movie, but I liked the way ya reviewed it it's quite neat. I'll have to give it a look see

  • Honestly this felt like a better digimon movie. It was pretty amazing.

  • This shit came out.

  • I might get this,i really liked the girl who leapt through time

  • iOniV2, I totally Agree to your review and I have already watched this. I have always been a fan to the animation and illustrations of Japanese Anime and Manga. This movie is worth watching, the design is connected to the animations of digimon the movie and the girl who leapt through time.

This is perfect for watching for summer vacation. Thank you for reviewing, its great.Mamoru Hosoda deserves to be generous and respected in his inspiration and belief in his creative art.

  • Honestly, I was a little thrown off when you said the director's previous films had no similarities with this one. I can't say anything for the Girl who leapt through time, but the Digimon movie? The digitized world, the virus causing havoc to major systems in the real world, the virus sending a giant deadly hunks of metal from space which teenagers stop barely seconds before it happens? It screams Digimon the Movie: Our War Games. But I loved this movie either way and this is a great review.

  • @Evagirl77 No digital beasts, the "virus" isn't exactly a "virus" and, well, the "giant hunks of metal" are also pretty darn different. Hell, the "giant hunks of metal" have a sub plot throughout the entire movie.

  • Is this Digimon?

  • @TheSeedweed ...No.

  • @iOniV2

How can it not be Digimon?

it looks like something you see in the series!

  • @TheSeedweed Dude...really?

Wtf...It's not Digimon get over it! It's a whole different storyline!!!!

  • This anime has also been made into a manga although i do not think it is fully released in the UK but it is there on the most part that I know of. And if your into manga I think you will find it a good representation of the movie.

  • Man, I really love the animation in this film. But yeah, I do agree. When I think of Summer Wars, I'm thinking of comedy in the beach. lol

  • @TheRealSentai Well, back in the day that's what it would have totally been.

  • Kids should go outside and play!

  • @DaddyWalrusguy But the outside world...it's so scary!

  • wow looks so good

    looks like digimon the movie

  • I thought that the plot resembled the first part of the digimon movie, the one with the virus on the internet. But that is what I really liked about it, was that problem approached differently with different characters

  • @UniquEnegma It felt more complete than the first part of the Digimon Movie, but I didn't really mention it due to time constraints. xP

But, anyways, the virus from Digimon The Movie and Summer Wars were...quite different.

  • Damn you for showing the bastardized version of the Digimon Film (or should I say 3 Films?) !!!

    That aside, nice review!

  • @droppingpenny Bastardised version? xD

  • @iOniV2

Yes, bastardized version when You consider, that 3 different Films "Digimon Adventure" (20min) "Our War Game" (60min) and "Hurricane Touchdown" (90min) that have nothing to do with each other and are NOT connected, the bullshit with the virus was made up for the US-Version (Thank you, Saban!), the movies were cut down, rewritten, and got a completely new soundtrack in exchange for the good one they had in the original. And here you have your Bastardized version aka. Digimon: The movie

  • @droppingpenny Really? I actually didn't know that. You learn something new every day...or I should just pay more attention to Wikipedia.

  • @iOniV2

Of Course! Wikipedia is the sacred place of wisdom! ;-)

  • @droppingpenny Oh you know it! xD

  • @iOniV2

Now you know too, and knowing is half the battle!

  • @droppingpenny Ha hah.
