@FloridaRaider no its much older than that , its estimated like 2000 years old , some historians and archeologists say that its more than that , ur welcome to visit anytime :p .
@adioomp718 no:) ppl dont live in there now , they used to , this is petra an ancient city in southern jordan (middle east) , its estimated that its more than 2000 years old , some say a lot more , anyway no one lives there now but evreybody goes to see it , one of the world wonders , if u need further info ask me np :) .
Another source is this one, according to the ancient Greek historian Hieronymus of Cardia (354-250 BC) the name "Petra" was given by the Greek traders because people there used to celebrate in spring a God/Godess over a big rock located southeast (today called: Umm Al Biyara). Bible is informative as well.
The name Nabataeans used to call themselves was the one given by the
rest Mesopotamia tribes and that is: "RQM" in Hebrew which means "rock with color strip lines". Josephus mentions king Reqemos (AJ 4.7.1) and identifies the area as Arecem where follows: "..that's called by the Greeks Petra".
Just take a look at Wiktionary or any other etymological dictionary. There is no cognate with ANY Semetic language. The Arabic word "Al-Batra" you mention is obviously a VERY late loan.Besides, if it was of Aramaic origin why would Simon change his name to Peter instead of Kephas (that's the Hebrew word for rock) in the Roman world?"rich trade"?! From Wiki again:"Their loosely-controlled trading network...etc" even their origin remains obscure.Josephus gave the name we use today. Please,be serious.
i have been there. you appresate? what you have when you see people who dont have what you take for granted like running water, toilets, electric, etc. i wish everyone had to go there and maybe they would have pride in what they have but so many people bitch about everything and anything and never have left the us or even their backyard. the castle and ruins that you can walk in if it was in the us there would be ropes and guards and pay $50 to go in. thats not right to pay to see history
You're Slavs (that is: slaves for etymologists) that got in the southern Balkan area 1100 years later (!) Your language is Slavic, your traditions and everything. Aren't you finally fed up of spreading nonsense lies? I'm sorry but I won't follow your childish absurd comments anymore. I have better things to do in my life than advocating the obvious at YT to Pomaks-Bulgarians with identity-crisis.
pc595: Do FYR of Monkeydonia a favor and stop humiliating yourself. Your unscientific crackpotism and reborn Goebbelistic tactics have no place in videos like that. And judging by the shithole you live in, I think you're not in position to do critics to anyone or anything. Even kids with preschool education know that Macedonians was just one of the MANY Greek tribes, considering themselves nothing, but Hellenes.
It's obvious that you don't understand english. This was a Hellenistic city at the endings of the Ptolemaic dynasty and ruled after Aretas IV the Philopatris, as Diodorus Sicilus cites. Greek rulers, Greek architecture elements, you name it: clear evidence of Hellenic spirit carried by Argead Macedons. Nothing to do with Slavs, get over it. I know it's hard for you even to read Wikipedia, but at least try to understand the difference between Aramaic alphabets and Cyrillic. Stealing is bad, mmkay?
pc595: Yeah, right. "Ancient Macedonian inscriptions" no matter if it's not written in Greek, no matter if the earliest variants of Cyrillic just go back in existence only since 940AC. And no matter if the whole alphabet construction is due to two Greek orthodox brothers. You're so brilliant. Could you please stop spreading your lame and fake "macedonism"? Thanks. Dreifuffzig: it comes from the latin petra which means "stone", a late borrowing from the Greek word "πέτρη" still in use today.
Primelude - Petra is Arabic for rock which is in use today too, transcending directly from the Semetic language Aramaic, the FIRST language of the Nabataeans (an Arab tribe) before the Kingdom developed, BEFORE the Seleucid Empire and Ptolemies. The rich trade the Nabataeans had, allowed them to develope their own architecture you see today based on Greek, Assyrian and then further influenced by the Romans bearing in mind that Petra was a secret, hidden city.
Yes, the best time to visit Petra is March, May, September and November. Petra has really great views and while your there dont forget to do Petra by Night it is sooooooooo amazing :)
All Muslim countries are safe for Americans if they r not going to invade them. Because when u invade them they will be treated by Americans like iraqis in Abu Gharaib. This makes us reluctant to invite u. Otherwise we r the most tolerable people on earth.
Note the tolerance exhibited for Muslims who refuse to worship as those in power believe valid; for free speech; for women who want to dress in a non-traditional fashion; for printed material that challenges all this; etc.
On Abu Gharaib: while it's the exception of US conduct, its horrors are routine for citizens who threaten far too many of these "tolerant" dictatorships.
Here's wishing that the entire world will, one day, live free of government compulsion -- the quicker the better!
Thanks so much for posting this! I would love to visit Petra some day, but for now, being able to see this video really inspires those of us who haven't visited such a wonderful place!
i was just there this past february...i am so glad i didn't listen to peeople who said for an american to avoid Jordan, I found the people amongst the most beautiful and friendly that I have met anywhere on earth...truly a beautiful place and I hope to be able to afford another trip in future!
