I personally didn't care much for this game, bar for one or two tracks the music was terrible (which is odd, as almost all Sonic games have great music, hell even Sonic 2006 did) the levels were rehashes and while I love the Sonic Rush games, without some kind of a boost feature that series' controls were REALLY jarring.
Not everyone who dislikes this game is a rabid Sonic fan, this game has problems, and you're the crybaby if you can't accept people making these complaints.

at the end of sonic gen robotnik says that he is no longer robonik but eggman on account of his future self and the old sonic learned (kinda) the homing attack now that i think about it so i guess that would answer some quesions that might have been asked...thats all
This game is okay, but it shouldn't be called Sonic 4. It plays more like Rush without the boost, and isn't nearly as fun as Rush. One of my personal least favourite 2D Sonic games, it's not as bad as the worst of the 3D games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06, not by a long shot, but it is pretty weak nonetheless.
Ugh, I was so disappointed when I played this. It has clunky controls, horrible physics, a broken lock-on mechanic, and astoundingly mediocre and linear level design. What a disgrace to the Genesis games. The music was all I liked. Personally, the 3D ones are a lot better than the cheap, derivative Dimps games. I was hoping for something like Sonic Colors.

I'm an old school Sonic fan, and I honestly love the fact that this game went back to most of the old aspects. Even bringing back the old special stage from Sonic 1 was a nice touch. Also, the minecart thing's from one of the Gamegear Sonic games. My only complaint is that this game isn't available on Android or DSiWare.
I like sonic unleashed for 360 and ps3, wii version is just a teeny bit slower and clumsier (and don't call me a sonic or ps3/360 fanboy, cuz unleashed is the only sonic game I ever played and i don't even own a 360/ps3)

I actually like Sonic Unleashed. Imho it's definitely one of the better 3D Sonic games. Yes, I agree that the Sonic stages are better than the Werehog stages, but I still enjoy playing as the Werehog. When you think about it it wouldn't really make sense for him to have that same speed due to his bulky features. Meh, just my 2 cents
I love this game. I must have gotten so many hours out of it... I replay it constantly. I don't give a crap what some obsessives say about 'physics' (yeah, it plays different to the old ones a little, I can testify to that because I still play the old ones today, but so what? It still plays well), I think they NAILED it. Looking forward to Episode 2 where hopefully the levels and robots will be more original.

I got sonic 4 on my iPhone and even though I am a retro player I was still satisfied without a doubt. Sonic looks slow when you looking at domeoen playing but when you actually playing it. It seems much faster. Not a big sonic fan but this game is worth $15.

Simple not a die hard Sonic fan. I have an outsiders view on the Hedgehog. I was a Snes kid not Genesis. So my background is heavily Nintendo, I did get to play many Gen games over the yrs. So I don't understand everything about the inner workings of the series, probably never will. Still I do my best to research every review I do and put out the best Sonic Reviews I can.

Surprisingly, I actually had no problem with the torch puzzle and managed to get it my first time through without a TIME UP. Took me 4 tries about but I managed to finish the act my first time in about 7:46.

Calm down kid. i never said I hated Unleashed in this review, said Sonic 4 is better. Sonic Colors is EVEN better then Sonic 4 though. I reviewed Unleashed for the Wii search Kwing & Swag sonic unleashed review. I gave it a 7/10 I think. The HD one had horribly broken controls though. I liked Secret Rings before Unleashed & Black Knight. Sega pulled all Sonic games that had a score below an 8.5 off the market, including unleashed this yr.
I poke fun at IGN sometimes its all in good fun. The caps gave it away & saying unleashed is your favorite Sonic game of all time. Didn't mean to offend ya, thanks for replying. I did Sonic Colors review, check it out. If you have a Wii I think the game will surprise you.

My biggest problem was simply that he would abruptly stop his forward motion while in the air, if you stop pressing forward with the joystick. This made some of the platforming moments very difficult and annoying. Its like the game looses all of its moment and instantly stops if your not pressing the go button.
What do you have against sonic unleashed? I thought it was the best Sonic game i ever played! Well, minus werehog stages. They were A. Hard B.Too slow and C. they seemed to take up 6/10ths of the playtime. The daytimes stages were awesome! But you know, i do respect your opinions.
@Nekopichu Werehog. It's been done before and it's unnecessary. The meat of the gameplay is the daytime levels which there are like 6 of. It was just an excuse to get away from moving at high speeds (the core of the series) which resulted in a mediocre beat em up for those segments.
@Nekopichu i found the day time lvls were awesome but they is a flight lvl(not sonic) and the nighttime lvls sucked balls seriously, its the worst sonic game ever, though sonic the hedgehog 2006 is close,
i think you forgot to mention the "a bit bloated" physics of the game but apart from that i enjoyed the review and it essentially covers the most important aspects of the game, and ultimatly it gives people the (correct) idea that the game is really enjoyable and well worth the download.
Sorry I don't really know much about Sonic's physics or all the things that make his games different then Nintendo mascots. I grew up with Nes and Snes. Only time I had 2 systems was N64 and PSX days.
@kNIGHTWING01 i understand, in fact, i don't consider it that much important, is just that the physics in the game are reeeeeeally different from the Genesis games. The Genesis era had a much more realistic and natural physics engine, and Sonic 4 doesn't play that well when comparing both eras. Try it out and you'll see the differences.
But in the end i think it doesn't make the game that much worse, in fact i think it's still a game worth the download and deserving of its name. 8/10 for me.
Even though i haven't beated the game yet i consider this to be the best sonic game i seen and played for a long time since i didn't like many of the 3D sonic games other than adventure 1&2.

you review many sonic games but you forgot "SONIC ADVENTURE" (dx) i mean ,you review sa2b,sonic colors, classic 2D games,etc...

@Iceeman234 I am no fanboy, I grew up with my genesis since 1992 and I can say that this game is no match for the genesis classics Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles and 3D Blast! This game don't have the same feel of the classics the same way Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros has. The game physics is so annoying.

Surprisingly, I actually had no problem with the torch puzzle and managed to get it my first time through without a TIME UP. Took me 4 tries about but I managed to finish the act my first time in about 7:46.
And yep, I get the AoStH/SatAM reference :D

@bickb22 Think of Donkey Kong Country. That had pre-rendered 2-D sprites so Sonic 4 is the same thing, only 3-D.

Calm down kid. i never said I hated Unleashed in this review, said Sonic 4 is better. Sonic Colors is EVEN better then Sonic 4 though. I reviewed Unleashed for the Wii search Kwing & Swag sonic unleashed review. I gave it a 7/10 I think. The HD one had horribly broken controls though. I liked Secret Rings before Unleashed & Black Knight. Sega pulled all Sonic games that had a score below an 8.5 off the market, including unleashed this yr.

I poke fun at IGN sometimes its all in good fun. The caps gave it away & saying unleashed is your favorite Sonic game of all time. Didn't mean to offend ya, thanks for replying. I did Sonic Colors review, check it out. If you have a Wii I think the game will surprise you.

@kNIGHTWING01 Really? Does that include Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Heroes, etc.? Huh, I guess SEGA is taking Sonic in a whole new direction this year. And it looks like its for the better. Granted, I liked Unleashed, Secret Rings, and Black Knight, but its good to see Sonic going back to his roots. Can't wait for Sonic's 20th anniversary

This game is way overrated you'd be better off getting Super Meat Boy!
It's so much better and in several years it will be used to define downloadable gaming.
Sonic has shiny graphics, Super Meat Boy has gameplay, sweet sweet gameplay xD

My biggest problem was simply that he would abruptly stop his forward motion while in the air, if you stop pressing forward with the joystick. This made some of the platforming moments very difficult and annoying. Its like the game looses all of its moment and instantly stops if your not pressing the go button.

What do you have against sonic unleashed? I thought it was the best Sonic game i ever played! Well, minus werehog stages. They were A. Hard B.Too slow and C. they seemed to take up 6/10ths of the playtime. The daytimes stages were awesome! But you know, i do respect your opinions.

@Nekopichu Werehog. It's been done before and it's unnecessary. The meat of the gameplay is the daytime levels which there are like 6 of. It was just an excuse to get away from moving at high speeds (the core of the series) which resulted in a mediocre beat em up for those segments.

i think you forgot to mention the "a bit bloated" physics of the game but apart from that i enjoyed the review and it essentially covers the most important aspects of the game, and ultimatly it gives people the (correct) idea that the game is really enjoyable and well worth the download.

Sorry I don't really know much about Sonic's physics or all the things that make his games different then Nintendo mascots. I grew up with Nes and Snes. Only time I had 2 systems was N64 and PSX days.

@kNIGHTWING01 i understand, in fact, i don't consider it that much important, is just that the physics in the game are reeeeeeally different from the Genesis games. The Genesis era had a much more realistic and natural physics engine, and Sonic 4 doesn't play that well when comparing both eras. Try it out and you'll see the differences.
But in the end i think it doesn't make the game that much worse, in fact i think it's still a game worth the download and deserving of its name. 8/10 for me.

I just used the Wii mote held Nes style to play it. Worked ok for me. I was to lazy to plug in my classic controller.
