The reason we say series 1, instead of season 1, is so that it will not be confused with the old seasons from the sixties. Series one is called Christopher Eccleston's (Nine's) era, because he plays the doctor. Series 2-4 is David Tennant's (Ten's) era, while series 5-? is Matt Smiths (elleven's era). Hope it cleared a little bit up :)
